Perhaps you should do some research on what sort of dog you are interested in and whether you have the time to socialise, train and look after a dog, etc before deciding on a breed. Not all breeds are suitable for the same people. The breed pages have a lot of information on them or you can just take the time and read some more posts on breeds, training, problems, health, etc. Good luck.

I'm not sure what state you're in but in NSW pitbulls are restricted dogs and must be desexed and follow tough laws in keeping them.

The term pitbull is often thrown around rather genericly, some people will include different bull breeds in there. Are you sure your friend didn't mean another breed as APBTs are being eradicated through no fault of their own.

The bull breeds do make lovely pets, guard dogs...... not really, unless you just want the look and bark to scare people off.

Then don't, as clearly you have not researched the American Pit Bull Terrier at all.

I'd suggest something soft, white and fluffy that will sit on the lounge and yap, if anyone strange comes near the house, that's all you need. A dog only need to tell you that a stranger is about.

If what you have in mind is a lapdog who will alert you if anyone is near your house, i suggest a pomeranian . It is very fluffy and would bark at slightest noise. Its coat need constant maintenance though and during the pup early months, you have to train him not to bark excessively....or else....

Getting a dog based on the breed alone won't guarantee you a good guard dog. Each dog has their own personality & character.

There are some really bad GSD & Rotti Guard dogs out there, they'd lick a robber to death LOL

How about go with an older dog.....what you see is what you get. There are close to 1,000 rescue dogs at www.petrescue.com.au find a pooch you think is compatible with your family and call the shelter/carer and see if the dog will alert bark.

I gather the dog will be part of the family and be allowed inside with you?

Research, research, research.

Do you know what a pit bull is about?

Do you know what breed you want?

Do you have enough room for this breed?

Can you manage a dog like this?

Are you willing to train the dog?

Have you resources to mantain a healthy dog?

Are you willing to clean up after a dog?

Have you the time?

Many many question you need to address, these are just a few.

Not telling you not to get a dog, but you need more reasons than you want a guard dog,and it's a freebie.

Apparently, even if you have a small breed (Pom, Chiwawa, Pug) once a burgular realises there is a dog in the residence it is enough to make them move on. They want quiet to break in, not a yapping dog to inform everyone of their arrival.

Good on you for coming on here and asking the question.

Pit bulls are not good guard dogs, they like people too much. They are bred for dog fighting, so dont be too surprised if once it grows up it tries to kill your "yaya". So always watch them together. They may be the best of friends forever, or the new one may attack your "ya ya". You never know.
