“Dog food recall in the USA due to contaminated ingredient :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Menu_Foods

It looks like the recall was due to rat poison in one of the ingredients (wheat gluten) that came from china....

Another reason why you don't want to get any pet food (dog, cat or fish) that uses wheat ingredients from china......

as they won’t be sure what stocks are contaminated.

Be careful buying any fish foods that are made in china, as wheat this is a common ingredient

ie wheat, wheat germ, wheat gluten could all be affected.....”

Euk. Iams and Nutro are doing their own recall of the wet pouched food. All made by Menu Foods.

Found Euk and Iams wet pouched food in a pet shop here in NZ yesterday... Not Happy.

Received a generic email reply from Euk / Iams AU / NZ still waiting for actual answers.

a site that's keeping count of sick and dead dogs & cats:

PS if you don't want to eat food from China check your peanut butter.

so far they have said that only certain batches of wet food were affected...

but it depends on what other companies may have also bought contaminated ingredients from china !

they only found out about this problem once people complained about their dogs getting sick...

that's why i only buy australian made....

Euk / Iams have said in their latest eMail that the wet pouched food on sale in New Zealand, which is made in the same Menu plant but supposedly outside the recall dates is OK to feed to Dogs & Cats. I for one am finding it difficult to believe anything they say.

Euk/Iams sell their so called premium food in all the Vet Clinics here and obviously get at least some of it made with the cheapest stuff they can get their hands on along with the supermarket brands......

I've not found Nutro's wet pouched food, also made by Menu, on the shelves yet in NZ ~ they were stockpiling it in warehouses, hopefully it will be sent back or dumped.

Doglet get's all home cooked meals now, it's safer if nothing else.

It doesnt affect australia

Maybe not but are you 100% sure of All States and all private importers?

No doubt many Australian dog owners would like to be informed about how the pet food manufactures who do supply Australia behave. Euk, Iams and Nutro were the only ones I mentioned all three supply Australia with food made in the US & Canada.

There is a New Zealand part of Dogz on Line as there is a UK part. The forum links all three together.

There has been a thread on this in general discussion recently.

In so far as Nutro are concerned their wet/canned range IS NOT available in Australia.

We are from NZ and used to purchase their canned product there, esp their puppy food, we have NOT AT ANY TIME been able to find a supplier here and have been informed by the importer that they are not going to introduce their canned product here in the foreseable (?spelling) future

The importer is based in NZ and they in turn supply a warehouse in Brisbane.

it looks like the the main problem was some wheat from china had chemicals in it, and some of the the wheat was processed and converted to wheat gluten, and this still contained the poison.

the contamination wasn't discovered by the manufacturer but by customers reporting deaths in their pets, then the recall started.

however-we can only hope that they have all the suspect batches of the problem ingredient....

- http://www.news.cornell.edu/stories/Jan06/....dying.ssl.html it sounds like there have been pets dying from this contamination since october, and only now they have discovered it....

why would you trust menufoods now, if it's taken so long to discover there is a problem ???

-we don't know how much poisoned wheat there was, so how do you know anything made using wheat from china is safe, if we don't know who produced the suspect wheat, and when it was made, and who bought it ?

-we also don't know what other manufacturers in and out of china could have used the problem wheat...

-testing for this poison is expensive i assume so not all companies would have done this yet.

-i also don't believe that once the chinese manufacturer discovers what wheat is a problem, that they will necessarily destroy the wheat vs sell it cheap....

Thanks for the nutro link.

No recall in NZ but it was shipped. Check the lists of Countries.

As previously reported ~ the recalled Nutro food is being stockpiled in NZ warehouses.

There is some talk in the US that the cause might not be as simple as rat poison - some people are calling for vets to do tox screens on affected dogs to look for other possibilites. Apparently the symptom pictures don't quite fit.

Much easier to blame an accidentally contaminated imported ingredient than look for other problems.

i also wonder if they have all the suspect batches....

they are still working out whether it was just the wheat gluten from china, what if there are other problem ingredients ?

We don't yet know what other ingredients come from china....
