miss shel Posted April 16, 2007 Share Posted April 16, 2007 Hi everyone, We gave our 4.5 month beagle his first bone last night. He loved it and just wouldn't leave it alone for hours. It also gave him something to chew that he liked - a big help for our hands that have been the substitute till now. kermat Posted April 17, 2007 Share Posted April 17, 2007 We recently found a fantastic shop in Perth that specialises in raw bones and other meat products (dried pigs ears, trotters, dried kangaroo etc etc) for dogs - it was awesome!! We bought three raw lamb bones for our 7 month old beagle puppy, one of them keeps him busy for hours they are our saviour!!! I have a pup as well and was wondering when the 'right' age would be to introduce her to bones. She's 10 weeks old now and all she's eating at the moment is dry dog food (Innova) and occassionally I give her a bit of a carrot for a treat. Personally I like getting brisket bones from the butcher, $2 is all they charge for a bag that lasts a week... have a look through this forum and the nutrition forum, you will see other recomendations of bone types... I watched cayenne pretty closely the first couple of times she had them, to make sure she wasn't doing anything stupid, like trying to inhale the whole thing... she loves her bones, now I just have to keep her from bringing them inside... considering purchasing a water pistol! only thing is she doesent do it when I'm watching... :p Red Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Asalei Posted April 17, 2007 Share Posted April 17, 2007 Mis Shel, we've noticed a dramatic decrease in our fingers being used for chewing purposes since starting our beagle puppies on chicken wings. Our breeder recommended bones for our puppy at 8 weeks as part of his diet, to keep his teeth in good condition and help with teething...Try your pup on lamb brisket boned he will love you for it Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Have been buying more than usual and our older dog's teeth look brighter (were OK to start with). Breeder told me to supervise with raw bones, however. Nothing cooked, of course. brothers_in_fluff Posted April 20, 2007 Share Posted April 20, 2007 Right from the off we were told our 9 wk old pups could have chicken wings, which they get practically every day (I cut the wings into 3 pieces so they're only get a third each time)... they absolutely love them, for the next 30 mins all you can hear are two sets of jaws going chew-chew-chew. Given wings only cost $3 a kilo at our local butcher there's no excuse not too. The other type of bone we were recommended were cooked Lamb Shank bones... obviously being smoother and so hard no set of Maltese Shih-Tzu jaws could chew right through them, hence they'd be safe.
