  2. I lost Jonah and Stussy close together in early 2023. It has been decades since I had no dogs in my house/life but I wasn't even capable of touching my friends dogs for many months I was just so sad. But of course there was a doggo in need and we started 'casually' fostering again late that year. Albert was our 3rd foster with the group who arrived in early 2024. He decided pretty early on that he was staying but it took us 6 months to agree. We really didn't think we could offer him everything he needed, but he thought otherwise! It was a big decision but he was officially foster failed at the beginning of Aug 2024. In Sept this year, 2025 I had a hard month. Burnt out from work I took a month off to do some reno around the house. But instead my sister had a work accident and I got sick and it ended up being a month of medical appointments and just trying to keep up with every day things that needed to be done for both of us and the house. I took a lot of naps that month just to get through a full day. Albert took the opportunity to claim snuggles. I liked it. I took him out in the car most days and enjoyed seeing how much fun he got from it. We spent a lot of time in each other's company doing nothing. I just wanted to be around him all of a sudden and really know what made him tick. I realised at the end of my 'holiday' that I'd actually finally let him in and allowed myself to love him. It's all he has ever wanted from me but my heart was still not ready. But he never gave up trying! Our relationship has changed significantly as a result and he is a much calmer and connected dog. But that is grief for you. Some losses are much harder than others and you can only do your best. I am sorry I couldn't give him more for so long, but I hope he has forgiven me for my surface love now he feels the difference.

  7. Oh nah, look, I don't require a particular breed myself as in terms of training I seem to be actually well over the average, so basically any pup that shows what I'm after is a perfect base. It seems that the Australian response to the Border Collie is the Koolie, it won't take too long for the ANKC to recognise them as a breed so farmers will start switching to that breed, problem solved isn't it?
  8. Found this. Someone was clearly trying to alert buyers but it's a cess pool. How do you choose a responsible (not just talking ankc) one vs heavily advertising gorgeous puppy photos with hidden parents. Sorry to say but many people just want now. Not later. Buyer beware. https://www.facebook.com/p/STOP-BAD-DOG-Breeders-PUPPY-FARMS-61570336943377/
  9. How many people had to look the other way for this to keep happening?
  10. She would be laughable if the whole story wasn't so tragic, what a liar she is!

  12. No need to recreate the wheel all over again. Better to stick with the breed you like and since there is enough variation within, each breed. can select for the traits you want. Why start X breeding again when the work had already been done?
  13. Yeah, my boy is happy to walk along with us on the farm as I'm helping mates with their water system, at the end of the day we go off road driving, when he runs in front of us. Crossing several groups of cows, horses he interacts, learns and gets his intensive training session. I have nothing against border collies taking over, that's a trend I cannot really help with, while if you're a breeder as I have understood, you could. Here is some breeding ideas I got from my mate in order to get an Australian dog that is at least as good as the Border Collie, smarter, low ego, softer touch: Start by tightening the ACD’s line with proven working types, then trial crossings with Kelpie for stamina (yes, once more) and lighter-footed yard control, Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog to lock in endurance and heat tolerance, or a touch of Border Collie only for smoother cast and command range, keeping no more than a quarter Collie blood so you don’t lose the ACD’s grit. These crosses should aim for quieter pressure, stronger eye, and longer stride while keeping that hard Aussie hide, bite, and weatherproof coat that make the ACD worth breeding here, not importing. Hope this found you well.
  14. Yes Never understood the change to all responsible, ethical breeders will life health guarantee their puppies. For life ... No one can do that. Not even for your own child. Whatever happened to reality. All life is a lottery. Once if misfortune struck then it happened because of sin. Or other centuries evil spells. Now if it's a pet the breeder is unethical. Blame game is still busy. Yes there are many dna markers available to reduce such known ones from the gene pool and pups But there are many more still to be mapped. Not only for our pups and other livestock but our children too Life and lifetime health today is still not guaranteed Not yet anyway but we can hope might come
  15. Was reading a post about what is quality in a show dog. One sentance in particular caught my attention "What is quality? It cannot be defined in breed standards or divided into measurements. But like charm and breeding in human beings, it must forever remain independent of legislation. It is an intangible something which does not depend entirely on line but a combination of line, thickness, thinness, width, depth, and curve; their relationship to one another producing a certain perfection and exquisiteness of harmony without which dull correctness is lifeless and uninteresting. A pride of carriage, a ripple of movement, suppleness and grace of modelling which other animals equally good in points have not got. The conventional eye accustomed to dull correctness, or in pursuit of sheer utility, will never make a judge!" To me, among those of equal quality some carry themselves with a pride that I have heard referred to as "presence" some have in spades" Others just don't care . Strangely it's not a sign that the don't care in the line doesn't have the determination of steel in completing the task it was actually bred for. Anyway back to the sentance that I referred to. "The conventional eye accustomed to dull correctness , or in pursuit of sheer utility" How ever did correctness become to be considered "dull" There in a nutshell is the driving force that has morphed breeds of all species since the show scene began, the thing not in the standard, the seeking and awarding to the whatever displays a new fashion, be it longer coat, (too many breeds to name) bigger eyes, (ditto) shorter muzzle, (king Charles, pug, French bulldog; bulldog just name some) longer ears, (bassett) narrower head (red setter) What do you call the changes to the original German shepherd? From athletes to ? Once proud police dogs to not a one suitable for that job replaced by other not "improved " breeds. All our breeds evolved for a purpose. Show scene moves the goal posts and the respect of the people who want thir chosen breed fit for purpose. Another public relations fail.. Exaggeration is not "improvement" no matter how often repeated

  17. You need to check with Dogs Victoria to see if the breeder is actually registered. That's your first step. Then, registered or not, you can get your pup DNA tested itself for all things pertaining to it's breed. I've never needed papers to insure my dogs so maybe check out other companies. Also, papers and good breeding do not ensure your pup will never have anything wrong with it. I've had a couple of "lemons" for lack of a better word.
  18. When I bred cavaliers over a decade ago I heard people begin crying when I said I would sell them a puppy on main register. The rot has been going on for decade's treating puppy buyers as potential criminals is a major public perception disaster ANKC members vilify each other mercilessly , the ongoing toxicology did nothing positive towards either public or members respect for each other. When I joined in the 70's newbies were welcomed to the dog world family, encouraged to become members, to come to shows, mentored and encouraged. Once the change began in the 80's from welcoming to suspicion, IE...is this person an unethical puppy farmer we need purging from the ANKC to preserve our reputation? The switch began slowly but the speed gain had many beginning to question do I want to to be a member of this back stabbing group By 1999 the assumption breeder members were unethical puppy farmer's had even spread to the way staff at the office treated us at the desk, come in to report a litter registration was incorrect, ie long coat chi puppy/puppies registered as short coat, or vice versa, instantly told, your fault, filled out registration wrong, have to pay fine to correct registration, in one instance every pup in the litter,, so quite a hefty fine. As I had submitted it in writing I asked for my original litter registration form. Even after they fond it, still wanted to fine me, even though it was filled out stating long coat registration on front page. The excuse being l hadn't rewritten that on back of page under the names and chip no. Even though there is no box for that on on back page. No kidding. Get told the computer automatically register 's the puppies mother's coat length to them (mum was a smooth coat) Since the staff entered the details from the handwritten form how can the computer be "automatically" filling in their coat length? Only after appealing to the office secretary for what was obviously a staff error could this be corrected without me being fined. The disrespectful attitude and behaviour made any contact unpleasant. As for all the board we noticed the same suspicion attitude, breeder members possibly puppy farmer's. Many were so offended began considering resign, many did and still do. Around this time some decided to form another breed registration where members could feel respected not suspected and in 2007 the MDBA came into being. As for how breeders were treating the public wanting a pedigree pup was changing to suspicion instead of welcome... Public relations disaster in the making, getting the garden gnome so offside (until then an ANKC member and breeder himself) took the issue to the media where he went to recommending X breds as the far better choice. Been continuing downhill fall than slide ever since. As for the limit registration only dead end kennels being the only ethical and responsible by making sure none of their puppies could fall into the hands of a puppy farmer.... Intimating any who do sell on main aren't ethical.. Leading to mass sterilisation of baby puppies to be doubly sure couldn't happen hasn't been a PR winner
  19. Only the portion that goes to the State government is increasing... from 4.64 to 9.00. Actual registration fees charged by individual councils should not double because f the increase. Considering that some Victorian councils are already charging in excess of $80 per year per dog at the discounted (read desexed) rate, and anyone owning more than 2 dogs must also pay an excess animals permit fee of anywhere up to $130 annually, any council raising registration costs by more than $4.50 is taking the p!ss... @DonnaMarieefrom your posts here, you have at least 3 of your own dogs, and also foster for rescue... that must be pricey, as you'd have registration at normal rates for your own 3-4, plus an excess animals permit fee, AND a foster carer permit fee and registrations (usually around $8) for any fosters in care. That is if you live in Victoria as your profile here indicates. T.
  20. What is even more hilarious is the attitude of some ANKC breeders towards the general public and “puppy buyers”. It reeks of elitism and driving away the general public at a faster rate. With things like detailed complicated contracts, limited registration, desexing at 8 weeks and co-ownership also off-putting. It’s like viewing every puppy buyer as an aspirational puppy farmer or BYB. Is desexing at 8 weeks in the best interest of the puppy or breeder? Even tubal ligation on a female puppy will produce adhesions , guaranteeing when a full Spey needs to be done later it will be more complicated. To top it off vet surgery doesn’t commonly use laparoscopic techniques , it’s not widely available and probably cost prohibitive. No wonder “adopt don’t shop” and rescuing dogs is gaining popularity. The majority of dogs in my middle class neighbourhood are oodles. I don’t blame them for buying a cross breed poodle, they are readily available. The general public aren’t going to wait years for the occasional litter bred by ANKC breeders.

  22. So you bought your pup from a dogzonline member? You have to be a ankc member here I'm sure. Well last I heard Doesn't make sense. Although these days we are all sitting ducks to be called puppy farmers anyway... No one is safe.. You must be inspected to ensure you conform to the POCTA legislation. Even if you had only one and it lives in the home with you. You MUST have a kennel and run, fence minimum 6 feet (they measure it to the inch.) Enclosed exercise area minimum 6 feet. Separate isolation/quarantine kennel and run. List of "staff" (will accept family members as staff) fire extinguisher. Evacuation plan. In event of flood or fire. Signage of your vet name and phone no Have I missed anything? So surely the blueprint of a puppy farm. No pass. No dogs... All tarred with same brush seems to me According to the rumour mill Victoria is introducing annual registration fees at double the previous amount. Said will be adopted by all states. Financial elimination of pet owners who cannot afford the increase..
  23. I noticed in the abc competition muster dogs between kelpie and border collie pups that many didn't like the border collies as they preferred the kelpie initiative whereas border's liked to be micro managed. Plenty of unhappy acd owners there hasn't been an ACD version yet. Some of mine work chooks, goats and cattle for their owners
  24. Oh yeah, I know that well, border collies are taking over on cattle work - if it suits farmers, and they seem to be conducting impressive quality team work - also I heard they reckon that they are even smarter that our cattle dogs! > The return of the brits by the backdoor hah? Right now, my job (I will self assign this, just like work dogs do without your consent) is to shed some light on questions people ask and (about my boxy head cattle dog) even though I have a good response, as I became a passionate about their story since I collected all pieces of the puzzle known around internet and accessible hard copies. However writing it down online will be of great interest not just for prospective owners, and also breeders (had one at the top of this thread showing lots of interest). Got some downtime today here in sunny Queensland and will revise the Australian History today on the ACD page (Wikipedia). And yeah, even though we humans sleep against eachother for comfort, we are all on our own in the end, inexorably deriving in the vast universe that has no end
  25. Just spent $18K on my Wolfie and cant count how many more thousands on my other 4 Lab Rescues all needing cruciate, I looked into insurance for this one as they have an "overbite" and may need extensive dental work in the future, but after reading all the recommendations on here l dont think l would bother now,
