I thought I might give those who are interested an update on my decision to try K9 Pro's TID course :D We have completed Module 1 and have now started Module 2 and we (Indi and I) are having a ball!!! I encourage anyone considering this course to contact Steve as he is "very" patient and explains TID so simply even a dummy like me can understand what's required Even if you don't want anymore from this course than to simply have-a-go, you will find the bond with your dog will increase 10-fold. I would like to evenually compete with Indi in Obedience Trials however I found Indi had no enthusiasm in our regular one hour weekly classes (paddock bashing I think they call it  ) after the first 10 minutes. My aim is basically to have Indi keen to work when I say those magic words "Are you ready" and so far it seems to be working

I have also worked in a vet hospital (although it seems like another life-time now) and found it very upsetting when someone's much loved pet was pts, but it's a whole other world when it's your own beloved dog/cat that's going through it. The one thing I have learnt is that when the time comes I make the rules - I will decide where it will happen, and for me that's not in the surgery as I don't want them to spend their last moments in unfamiliar, sometimes scary surroundings. But those last moments are going to be VERY hard for anyone, no matter who you are, or where you work, it's losing a special friend and we're responsible for them and we're hoping we've made the right decision at the right time.

Thanks dianed - I was aware years ago they removed the anal glands, but apart from Googling I have no idea how Perianal Fistula's are now being treated. I'm sorry your poor girl had to be pts, but 12 years is a good age for a GSD, and you did the right thing - you knew when it was the right time for her to go to the rainbow bridge.

Ipswich I am based in Sydney so I can't offer any help with recommendations. Other posters may have some though. Otherwise she could call the specialty practices and ask them which of their specialists would be best to refer this case to and then make a decision. Thanks Rappie - I will be sending this thread to my friend so all suggestions welcome

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Thanks Erny - The owner has found a holistic vet who her current vet knows of and has dealt with, and he has promised to give her a referral to take with her on the first consult. I would be heading straight for a specialist myself, so was hoping someone here might be able to recommend one in this particular field. I'm also concerned about the diet and from what the owner has told me I don't think the vet treating this particular boy has been able to give her any recommendations as to what she should be feeding him.

The litter brother of my eight year old GSD was diagnosed with a Perianal Fistula in January of this year and has since had 5 surgeries which included cauterization. After his last procedure on Wednesday his Vet has suggested the owner seek a second opinion. Of course the owner of my boy's brother is VERY concerned as he has lost a considerable amount of weight - approx 8kg in 4mths and is straining quite a lot. The anal area is cleaned twice daily, he's on AB's (Clavulox) - she was using Neocort on the area but has since stopped as it didn't seem to help. The owners questions are:- Can anyone suggest who she might go to for a second opinion (experienced in Perianal Fistula's) in the Brisbane/Ipswich area? Is there a particular diet that might help him? Has anyone here had a GSD with this condition - if so, could you give "any" advice as she is at her wit's end. Thanking you in advance.

No I wish you did - I was meant to go, but had to pull out 'cause it was a friday (work commitments). I will DEFINATELY be at the next one (whenever that is ) Should be this year... we should start nagging Steve about it ;) I can do "nagging" - my OH says I'm very good at it -
What have the parents got to do with it? Not that is matters, but the parents were no doubt at work, earning a living to feed their family and their now deceased Labrador dog. It is school holidays and it is not unusual for a responsible 13 year old to be home without his parents in school holidays. Had the parents been home would that have stopped a roaming vicious dog from attacking their dog? I don't think so. Souff The responsible 13 year old was not on his own was he - weren't there younger brothers at home too . I've also had to go out and earn a living to feed my kids but haven't left the eldest (when he was 13) to look after his younger brothers. And no, nothing his family could have done would have stopped the "roaming vicious dog" - that's up to the owners. It was odd his parents weren't there to support him during all the press interviews.

Great entertainment for the neighbours too - been there, done that PS It does work though
-
In the interview (channel 9) last night the boy said he stabbed the dog through a security screen door. I wouldn't think the dog would be able to attack the boy behind a "security" screen door. Have the parents been mentioned at all - were they home at the time?

I can't make this course (still in first module TID with K9 Pro ), but I'd love to try DWD down the track. Any chance there'll be another beginners course at Durack this year? -
Another suggestion is to get on youtube and search CCD trials (there's some brilliant ones out there). I found it helped to watch others going through a trial and the different things to expect from judges - you can also learn from the mistakes others might make
-
Is Qld doing this too? Last time I trialled you didn't know your number until the day of the trial, which was great 'cause I didn't have time to stress like Jeannne is now

If it wasn't for the fact that you have to drive home I often wonder if a quick rum might help
-
Just remember Jeanne - ENJOY YOURSELF I know it's easier said than done, but I think we all lose sight of the fact that we're supposed to be doing this to have a great time with our dogs Nothing bad's going to happen if you make a mistake, in fact most people (judges & stewards included) are very sypathetic.

I know a senior judge and I have asked this person if it was right that competitors were being pinged for putting their hands in a different position before the recall, and after the recall. This particular judge was adamant that there was no penalty!!! This person is a senior judge and is a current judge. I would not risk the change of hand position myself because it comes down to who your judge is on the day. It was a senior judge who picked me up on this and I asked another couple of senior judges who all agreed that that hands must return to the same position as they started in. That said the same senior judge said they'd ping me for my foot work as they would consider it a double signal as well - when I stop for a halt I take a longer slower step with my right foot and then bring my left foot up in line. Some people take a shorter step before stopping, I just take a longer one and this person was adament that they consider it a double command. There's a reason I choose not to trial under them ever. Needless to say I will be enrolling in the judges training program later this year so I'm sure I'll have LOTS AND LOTS of questions to test out all the senior judges!! I have my little blue rule book in front of me And yes, I had thought your hands should return to the same position, however this came up in a discussion between a group of us who were training and this particular judge said there would be no points deducted! There were a number of us who were stunned by this because a couple of them HAD lost point for changing position. This is a particularly nice judge (who's had years of experience) and I'd like to think, can be forgiven for this one error (I'm sure the competitors under this judge would be happy )

Thanks for putting the page number in, because you know what I'm doing this week I know a senior judge and I have asked this person if it was right that competitors were being pinged for putting their hands in a different position before the recall, and after the recall. This particular judge was adamant that there was no penalty!!! This person is a senior judge and is a current judge.
