It's always a good idea to remove the bowl (and any bits of food left over) when letting your dog out of their crate. I always close the crate again as they only access their crate at night to sleep in

I totally agree. I have three dogs (1 female and 2 males) and I use crates - we've never had an argument. I use the crates for bones as well. In the end it's the most secure and safest method when feeding numerous dogs

My OH (mechanic) used an ultrasonic cleaner at work the other day while our Goldie was with him. He said the sound (can't be heard by humans) sent our Goldie crazy - running around the workshop in a panic. At first they didn't know what caused it but when they realised they switched off the cleaner and he immediately settled. I don't know if you would call that drive or just plain fear . Maybe the dog attacked the lady out of pure fear

I've tried to get snake catchers out in the past and unless the snake's in the house they won't come out. One guy only came out 'cause he was worried my then cat would hurt the snake. We're now on acreage and have had a number of visits from snakes (previous owner lost a dog to brown snake ) and I've learnt to bring the dogs in and wait until the snake's moved on - luckily most of them have been harmless green snakes

thank you, thank you, thank you Quickasyoucan. I couldn't have said it better myself. I've done the research and feel the K9 Force TID course is what I'm looking for - what I wanted to know is other DOLer's opinions. I do intend trialling my GSD and feel Steve's course is going to give me the direction I will need to have a dog that is going to enjoy trialling and want to train (not just go through the motions) This might not be the course for everyone but for me to understand TID properly I'm interested in this course because (after receiving the first module today ) it explains the fundamentals of prey drive step-by-step - I'm not sure an IPO club would explain in the same "detail".

I definately will - and thanks to you Huski for letting me know about the course in the first place. It sounds like it's exactly what I've been looking for, and everyone here who has either completed or are completing it are all so enthusiastic (I love all the video's). Now I think I'll have to learn about uploading onto YouTube

Not just a "different stare", I think what Bully means is the body language - when my young GSD wants to play she does the whole crouching down, bum up, tail wagging thing and stares intently at whoever she's inviting to play and there's no dominance in her stare (she's the bottom of the pile at our place :D ) . When my Goldie wants to eat he stares intently at whoever's feeding him, waiting for the signal to be allowed to eat - no dominance there either. However if you're scared or nervous around dogs my 8yr old male GSD will be very still and stare - that is a look I stop immediately because I know he's attempting to establish himself as the more dominant in that situation and I'm not going to allow him to use "that" stare.

Persephone my two GSD's would take their time (and enjoy ) turkey wings/necks, but to the Goldie it's always a race to see how quick he can finish (and that's on his own, without other dogs around). I can't see where the enjoyment is, so sometimes we make him wait with it in his mouth (yes in his mouth :D ) for a few seconds before he's allowed to eat/swallow - just to register the taste before it's gone!!!

I wouldn't recommend necks/wings for a Labrador as they're small enough for her to swallow whole. I've got a Goldie that did this (only once ;) ), so now I give him frames which he can't eat in one gulp.
