I would like to acknowledge THE WERRIBEE UNIVERSITY OF VETERINARY. From the very first day of having brought Millie home from the 'breeder' THEY HAVE BEEN AMAZING. I have huge thanx to those vets and nurses who have helped Millie throughout her life and also to the Emergency Department Staff that worked so quickly and effortlessly last Tuesday and Wednesday. Steve, Ben, Carol, Jesame, Melanie, Jane, Adrian, Rob, Calista - THANK U from the bottom of my heart. :D Lastnite, my Dad and I took the sombre (much slower) journey back to the Emergency Dept. We collected My Millicent, her precious body to bring home. It was traumatic and emotional the whole way there and waiting for her to be brought out It was EXTRAORDINARY - i hav never seen anything like it... I was fearful at first and then they wheeled the trolley out.. MY PRECIOUS MILLICENT had been prepared in the most PERFECT and very fitting way possible : A BURGUNDY SILK KIMONO STYLE BAG, fitted with a GOLDEN TASSLE! So well suited to my special black China Doll. I could not believe my eyes As we drove home - Dad said "Is this for real? Did u pay extra for the luxurious 'QUEEN' service or sumthing?" We both managed a smile and even a laugh! We had Mill with us and we were so happy to be taking her home, to her home, to say goodbye for the last time. We took a drive down to the river and drove past the softball fields where we have our walks. Once home, we laid Millie to rest in my Mum's rose garden. With her collars, tags, leash, harness seatbelt, bowl and puppy ball. We sprinkled rose petals and filled her grave. My own closure is much 'closer' and bearable now. Millicent now Resting peacefully at home where she belongs.

I am saddened to read this May Tobias rest peacefully now. U gave him a perfect last day with u.

Badboys i would like to say thank u, without a lot of ur guidance and understanding in the breed i wouldn't know as much as i do. Over the years u hav been knowledgable and supportive to me. Every bit of info u hav ever given and any websites and links has taught me that little bit more about the Shar Pei, so Thank You. I too was very upset when u lost Charm I hope Dylan and Jazzy are doing well. Giv them a hug and pat for me please. I would also like to thank Peibe/Steph. Without her i would never have found out about Dogs Online and i would have made sum terrible mistakes had i not chatted online in another forum with her. Steph taught me sum really good Do's and Don'ts' !!! Without Steph i would be extra lonely right now - If i had never met u/chatted with u I WOULD NOT HAVE SARGE TODAY. Thank You Steph for bringing the whole Shar Pei Rescuing 'concept' into my life and for trusting me to be a good 'Foster Failure Mother' to Sarge Another thank you - to Miss Squish. Whenever i needed to talk about dog stuf u were always the first on the fone. We hav talked for hours about our pei and silly things they hav gotten upto. U were also a very big help in organising Sarge's flight from Nsw for me. I was a poor uni student at the time and didn't have a clue where to start!! I want to Thank You so much for posting on my behalf when i was clearly unable to do so. I had dreams of Millie and Asia meeting one day, I even considered moving to Adelaide! I guess i will have to badger u with all of Sargey's antics now. Thanx to everybody who has posted. Sympathy and Condolence is a tough thing but quite helpful.

Thank u all, it means a lot to hav other doggy ppl to be so understanding at this horrible time. I am finding it very difficult. I hav a lot of love and support, i will get thru this. SHE WAS TOO YOUNG. BUT in reality - She was born with a problem, a congenital defect of her windpipe. From day 1 her life was a struggle. She had lots of treatment and a surgery to rectify the problem, very very early on. Over the past 2 years other problems had arisen, which all became contributing factors.. Millie passed away in a very sudden emergency situation. I was frantic. The scariest day of my life. Her thin and narrow 'cat like upper airways' failed her. I did all that i could. Now she is at Peace and no more struggle :D

It is going to take a LOT OF TEARS AND A LOT OF TIME to come to terms with BUT I HAVE TO BE STRONG FOR SARGE NOW. HE IS SO CONFUSED ABOUT WHERE SHE IS, it is heartbreaking to watch him sniffing everything in search of her I hav to keep an eye on him, i don't want him going thru a deep depression. I've been there and MILLIE HELPED ME OUT OF IT. NOW I HAV TO DO IT ON MY OWN AND BE THE STRONGEST I CAN BE. Thank u to everyone xxx

It is with intense pain, distress and heartache that i begin to type this memorium. I don't know where to begin.. I think, i feel so incapable to do this right now.. I will try my best. It doesn't feel right that this has happened, I DIDN'T WANT HER TO LEAVE ME, not like this, not this year.. Tobias looks like a lovely fellow. Beautiful photo of him. U are an angel for rescuing him and doing ALL THAT U CAN to make his last months/weeks/days as easy for him as possible. He is lucky to have u watching over him When the time comes i'm sure he will be at peace in knowing that he had you there with him till the end

Would really luv to cum guys.. but with Mill being unwell for so long now, she really isn't her usual social self Hav fun guys.

I have not had pet insurance for any of my dogs. I guess i don't really know enough about the type of cover you can get. But i will definately be getting it for my next dog/shar pei. I hav spent so much on my Millie Millon Dollar Baby, and i will spend whatever is neccesary. My Vet actually mentioned Pet Insurance Australia to me.

Dancinbc - thanx for the advice on the bentleigh vet. i'm willing to try natural therapies. Nekhbet i will look into Swell Down. May be helpful. Thanx. Aussielover - we have done bloods, This lead my vet to prescribe the colchicine. My vet has also suggested a kidney biopsy which i would rather not do. There is no actual testing for Shar Pei Fever. I am trying to find a shar pei specialist. Thanx for all of the comments. Millie ate her dinner tonight and will continue colchicine daily.

Dry food with mashed sweet potato, diced chicken fillets, broccoli and rice. And a denta stick after ;)

Any advice welcomed. I am confused about pain relief and anti infammatories that i can use for my dog. Millie is almost 6yrs old and recently diagnosed with Shar Pei Fever. It is a Shar Pei specific disease. Which can lead to severe kidney trouble. One of the symptoms in Shar Pei Fever is hot, swollen hocks. Her back legs are like huge extra saggy pants but lumpy and sore. Millie is having a medication called Colchicine (COLGOUT). It is a medication used in humans to treat gout. She is having one tablet daily to help prevent fever attacks occuring - which consist of high temperature, heavy breathing/panting, lethargy and swollen hocks. I don't think the medication is doing anything specifically for the inflamed hocks. She is tip toeing gently around the yard. I have used Rymadyl for inflammation before but am worried about how any medications will affect her kidneys. I have not used metacam but believe that can affect the kidneys also. Could one shot of cortisone be enough to help reduce the swelling in her legs ? But will cortisone then create more kidney risks ? I think i am going to change vets. Everything i have researched about Shar Pei Fever leads to the Colchicine medication. But her legs have not really altered. Lets just say she isn't a shar pei and has severe swollen legs - what would you treat with ? And what treatments are bad for kidneys ? Thanks to anyone willing to read my dilema.

Gosh, i hav not heard this but would be interested to know if there are any facts. I use Voltaran myself. Hav not used on my dogs before, didn't know that you could. I wonder if there are any studies being done to link voltaran to stroke and kidney failure !

This may sound strange but i am currently dealing with Shar pei Fever. Some of the symptoms are - High temp, panting, inflamation of the back legs.. lethargy, not much activity or energy. My dog is drinking heavily and urinating more. With your dog urinating on the bed - I would get the vet to check your dogs kidney function and urine concentration. The Shar-Pei is a Chinese breed. I don't know but the Japanese Spitz may have something in common in regards to kidney troubles. Its worth a look into.
