Excuse: " a reason or explanation put forward to defend or justify a fault or offense" Several posts sought to Explain or provide reasons for the dog's behaviour - it was "startled" by the jogger - are such posters trying to justify or excuse the behaviour of the dog (or the owner)???? Guess it depends on your point of view - are you building a case for the defence or stating a fact???? :D

"The OP has another thread about this friend having "a long standing fear of GSDs"." If posters are going to refer to other threads this needs to be referenced in the interests on clarity - like the jogger I am unable to read minds or predict the future.

Where does the poster mention that her friend "has a long standing fear of GSD"?????? She said the friend is in therapy NOW because of what happened. Hello, poor bloody woman went out for a jog - was on the VERGE - NOT the FOOTPATH where the dog and its owner were and she got bitten!!!!! Dog is a public menace and so is its owner - peope have everyright to go jogging, ride a bike, ride skateboards rollerblade, push prams or take their kids on a ramble (with or without the family dog) it is up to us as dog owners to ensure our dogs do not bite anyone. The good manners and common sense of other path users is out of our control but the behaviour of our dogs is our responsibility. Rant over!

Rare Or Disqualifed Colours In Breeds.

Thank you Poodlefan - I like partis too and am warming up to the phantoms - but they must also be a reasonable example of the breed. -
Rare Or Disqualifed Colours In Breeds.

OMG - that is one ugly little poodle! -
My male dog was entire for about 6 years and never peed on anything close to the house - he wees on command and generally squats in the yard though will lift on trees on the boundary fence sometimes. Your boy needs retraining to wee on command - as someone else suggested - back to basics - you need to take control and train him where to wee instead of letting him choose.

Have seen a poodle clipped by Pooch Ave and it was a very good job. But don't have personal experience of them.

I hope not!!!!!!There is a lot more to being ethical than health testing. It is way too easy to become a registered breeder.
-
You poor thing - it is sooo frustrating when a simple evening walk with your dog cannot be enjoyed because of other peoples selfish behaviour. Hope your complaints make a difference. A least Max doesn't get upset - my male dog goes ballistic when confronted by loose dogs when he is onlead.

What The Rspca Dont Want You To Know
frufru replied to mortonplace's topic in General Dog Discussion
Sorry I don't agree with a 100% no kill policy. Some dogs, for behavioural or medical reasons, are not suitable to rehome. It is a difficult decision but at the end of the day there are limited funds and fascilities to house homeless animals. -
I Finally Found The Right Vet For Sash...
frufru replied to Kelly_Louise's topic in General Dog Discussion
That is fantastic - combination of your hard work and a wonderful vet by the sound of it! -
I don't like to burst your bubble but technically anything made of matter is a chemical!!!!!

Whats The Best Tick Prevention?
frufru replied to dandybrush's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
As I said in a previous thread - one of the local vets has her own dog on Proban - we live in an extreme tick area and you have to weigh the risks up. My old girl was hospitalised twice for ticks as a younger dog and I am sure this contributed to her heart condition which eventually killed her - she never got a tick whilst on Proban. Other chemicals are not without risk either. I usually put my show dogs on Proban as I am sure the frequent washing associated with showing a poodle decreases the efficacy of topspots not to mention the greaseball you get on the back of the neck. My retired male wears a tick collar and has a very short haircut in summer and we never go bush during summer our walking is done round the village. -
Proban Use And Removing Ticks
frufru replied to Skruffy n Flea's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I would use the proban for 4 days after returning home - it is possible to get more than one of the little blighters at one time. You need to undertake daily searching for ticks regardless of the product used. If I find a tick I dab the back of it with a pyretherin based insecticide and remove after a couple of minutes - they come out easier) Our local vet uses Proban on her own dog - we are in an extreme tick area and have them year round - this year is shaping up as a very bad tick season due to the wet weather. Other vets in the area reccommend using 2 products eg collar and top spot. Also watch your dogs carefully and be aware of the symptoms - but be careful - a friend's westie recently had a tick and she had him to the vet 3 times because he was vomiting before they found what was causing the problem- paralysis tick on his neck - not a common symptom - though laboured breathing and change of voice are. May your stay be tick free -
Anyone know where I can purchase one - I am being driven crazy by the wet weather.

Actually my standard poodle bit me the first time he had an epileptic seizure that I witnessed. He warned me with a growl but because I was so distraught at what I had just witnessed I disregarded his warning and attempted to touch him. He only bit once on my forearm but it was enough to puncture the skin and I, of course, needed a tetnus shot. With susequent seizures I waited for him to come to me once he had regained consciousness - I could touch him while unconscious but not always afterwards. I also have friends whose small dog bit her quite badly when it was run over by a friends car in their driveway and the little dog was critically injured - she of course rushed over to comfort her beloved dog and he instinctively bit her (several times) I am not trying to compare the situations but rather I am trying to say that dogs are dogs and given the right circumstances most of them will bite. Regarding the police - if they have been called then I think they are entitled to shoot the dog if it is agressive - not sure what else they are meant to do. Pressumerabley if you call the police it is a serious situation!!!!!!!!

Cool - thanks so much for the link!!!!

I have heard that Choice Magazine recently covered this topic but have not been able to get to the Library to check it out and was wondering if anyone else had read it and could give a quick summary of what was covered and the findings???
-
Thanks for the links all - as I said we do monitor but she is quite determined being a brown standard poodle puppy LOL. None of my neighbours use snail bait so I am more concerned about the parasites - never seen a rat in 10 years so I am hoping we sidestepped that one.
-
Our 4 month old standard poodle puppy loves hunting and eating the large number of snails that are around our garden - we try to monitor but she invariably ingests quite a few. Does any one know of any problems caused buy eating snails - I was thinking specifically of parasites? Hopefully she will grow out of the behaviour with some ongoing training.

The No Nots actually says it is suitable for other animals including dogs.

When we lived in Toowoombah (about 6 years ago) our favourite parK was a very large one up near Downlands college - as far as I can remember there are no fencd dog parks in Toowoombah. It never bothered us as our 2 girls had excellent recalls. We often went to the off leash area at Queens Park too but again your dog would need a very reliable recall.

I use No Nots detangler (another horse product) and find it excellent!

Removing Urine Smell From Poodles Rear End
frufru replied to Shaar's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Ohhh the poor thing! I don't know what to suggest - with the suggestions of Nappy type things I would be worried about scalding of her skin if she had to have a wet nappy on for any length of time. Do you use "dry bed" for her sleeping areas to take the moisture away?
