  1. No...I did not realise there were 3. I only knew of the Perth club. I looked up the breed on the Dogzonline home page. There is a 14 month old available to the right home. http://www.dogzonline.com.au/breeds/community/bernese-mountain-dog.asp Thanks for that Rebanne, but I want a young pup, also it is still too soon for me to get another dog. Just thought after my last experience that I would start looking earlier.

  3. Probably beacuse I was a bit shocked at the lack of response and was not sure what to do next.
  4. I want a Bernese Mountain dog. I always start my emails by introducing myself and telling the breeders about our lifestyle. I have never mentioned price in any of the emails. I have not followed up any of my emails. 8 years ago, I wanted either a St Bernard or a Bernese Mountain dog. In the St breeders defence, I probably hadnt researched the breed well enough? The Bernese breeders knocked me back because I had one in the past, that died from a snake bite when she was 2 years old. My emails I have sent have been quite lengthy and I wonder if that has put the breeders off, but I thought that is what breeders wanted, plenty of info?
  5. 8 years ago I decide I would like to get a pup. I narrowed my choice down to 2 breeds (1 of which I had previously had) I contacted numerous breeders but kept getting knocked back. I felt I was treated badly at the time. After 6 months of trying I got despondent and one day while out shopping, brought a pup on impulse from a pet shop. Seven and a half years later, I still have that pup, but she is getting old and is developing quite a few health issues. It is now time for me to start planning another pup for the future. I have given myself a 2 year time frame to work within. A few months ago, I started emailing breeders of my chosen breed. I have not recieved even 1 reply to any of my emails Over the years I have read all the threads on here of what breeders want from prospective pup owners. I really thought that I was fulfilling the criterior My question is...what am I doing wrong? Please help...I dont want in 2 years time to be coming home from the pet shop with another impulse buy pup.
  6. I have been following this story on FB for some time. I really think that for a lot of people it has turned into a "Witch Hunt" towards Kim Hollingsworth. The horses involved in this whole sad saga now appear to have become collateral damage.
  7. Had one today...I have a cat and three kittens and I am sick of them and want them gone today. Can you come and pick them up now?
  8. Alida's pet Resort in Jacobs Well (ph 55462275) is fantastic.
  9. While it is natural to wonder about a rescue dogs past, I think you are often better off not knowing. No matter what past experiences a dog has had, you cant change them. All you can do is live in the "here and now" with that dog. I think sometimes if you know a dogs past, it is easy to have perceptions about it. When taking home a rescue, I think it is a good idea to view that dog as a clean slate and start all over again for that dog. Treat it like a brand new puppy. Train that dog the way you want that dog to behave. Instead of worrying about what issues it may have, deal with the issues and any problems as they arise. Make it "your" dog instead of always being a "rescue"
  10. We have 2 dogs at the moment that have had recent amputations. One is a 10 month old Wolfhound x that had her rear leg amputated about 6 weeks ago. She is coping really well. It has barely even slowed her down. The other is a 5 month old Ridgeback x. He had his front leg removed about 8 weeks ago. His recovery seems to be taking a bit longer than the wolfy. He still face plants alot and gets tired very quickly. He has just started having hydrotherapy last week. In spite of it though, he is still a very sweet happy pup.
  11. In my opinion, that man should have been left to rot in jail for the rest of his life! Let alone,be allowed to own another animal
  12. I work with dogs, I live with dogs. Sometimes I just get plain fed up with doing "dog stuff". Then I stop going to training. When I feel motivated again I start taking them back to training. I actually love taking my dogs to training and get good results from them. The club I go to is great and think that is what makes all the difference. Have tried several different clubs in the past. Some I have just walked away from in disgust. (Still teaching how to do Alpha rolls, heavy corrections on chains all at an entry level) Are my dogs well enough trained? Probably not to a lot of other peoples standards, but for me they are.
  13. You are so right - I would never adopt from a shelter again. I don't know how they can possibly know how a dog would fit in to a home environment and the outcome can be devastating for the person thinking they are getting a suitable companion dog. Of course the shelters have to operate the way they do but as a person looking to adopt I would be looking for a dog from a foster care situation in future. There are pros and cons in adopting from both a shelter and foster homes IMHO. A shelter is such a high stress environment. You get to see how the dog copes with that type of pressure. They are mixed with other dogs. Exposed to a range of people from qualified trainers / behaviourists, volunteers from all walks of life, young teens doing work experience, special needs groups, public coming in to view them and etc At our shelter, they see cats, are exposed to a range of livestock, are exposed to heavy machinery in the background. Every dog is walked everyday. Every dog gets to run in a lare grassy off leash area with other dogs every day and get trained as needed. They also get to go to the park every week. So no... shelter staff cannot tell you how a dog will be in a home environment. They can however tell you alot about a dogs character from the time, effort and experiences they put into them, plus you have the back up of the shelter, if there are problems.
  14. Alidas pet Resort 55462275. Plenty of people I know use her and are very happy with the service that she provides. As a person she is very passionate about dogs and never hesitates to help out her local shelter when asked.
  15. Yes there are people that are willing to adopt a deaf dog, but in my experience they are very few and far between. There are also people that are willing to adopt a deaf dog because they want to "save" or "rescue" them, but really dont have the versatilities that are needed to care for them. The last deaf dog (a white Boxer) that I rehomed, lived with me for months, before an approptiate home was found for her.
  16. "I can appreciate that it's a "defect" so to speak but a life is a life. What is the harm in keeping white pups?" I am another one who thinks euthanasing them is the ethical and responsible thing to do. There are far too many white dogs out there already with skin conditions that people just can not stay on top of no matter how hard they try. It is also very difficult to rehome deaf dogs. While they might be nice and and easy when they are young babies, wait till they hit the 9 or 10 month age and they have not had the training they should have recieved. A lot of people struggle with high energy dogs like a boxer at the best of times. A deaf one makes it even more of a challenge. They often end up in shelters and shelter life is hard for any dog let alone a deaf one.
  17. Dog Owner....so sorry for the loss of your dogs.
  18. At the pound I work at, all dead animals are scanned. I thought everyone did the same
  19. That was lovely to watch. Thank you for posting.
  20. I voted no. While I like to "think" my dogs are bomb proof, they are still dogs and I cannot 100% predict how they will react in every situation. Especially my poor old Shar-Pei x . She often has ear problems and her ears are sore. If someone inadvertently rubbed or patted them, I don't know how she would react.
  21. We are the Animal Welfare League QLD The dog I mentioned is Jane and she is at our Stapylton branch.
  22. If you decide to get a dog from a rescue, (no matter what breed), why not take your pigs in for a "meet and greet" first. That way it is done in a controlled environment, and you could get an indication of how they might go once you get the dog home. I see you are QLD...we have a very nice 8 month Bull Arab x Mastiff up for adoption at the moment ;)
  23. I find it really quite alarming, the number of people that are saying this little dog should be PTS. Based purely, on the scant amount of info that has been provided.
  24. The dog was about 10 months old when they got her. The breeder was going to keep and show her but her colour was not good enough.
