  1. Just an update...my neice spoke to the breeder and she has been really helpful and concerned. She also confirmed that both the mum and dad of this pup have a 0/0 score for both elbows and hips, so this must be a fluke/throwback? My neice must have mixed up her info when she was telling me, but she was pretty upset. Maybe those scores were for another pup that she was looking at? Who knows.... Out of that litter, this pup is the only one sold to a pet home and all other littermates are being shown and are healthy. She offered a replacement pup if my neice chooses as well ( which is very nice)but at this stage it isn't an option. My neice is going to play it by ear for the next couple of months, in conjunction to using joint guard/fish oil etc and keeping him confined. Then she will reassess what to do, with how he is responding. She *may* at that point get another xray and get a second opinion from a different specialist. Thanks for all the help and imput on this thread. Kym
  2. Thanks blacklab.....your inbox is full btw
  3. I agree, but it would be interesting to know. Sometimes I get caught up in the details.. I know my sister/neice just want to give this dog the best chance, iykwim. He is very much loved
  4. Blacklab, thankyou for the pics and info...3k is a good price for two???I was expecting worse actually... What a gorgeous fellow Anyway be back later hopefully with some info
  5. They go to another vet, but the other vet is owned by Booval, and that is where the dog was sent for the initial xrays, but they were read at the specialists... * still trying to find out whether it was an elbow score* Again thanks for all the imput
  6. Blacklabradore, was that cost for one elbow or two? And do you know if two are to be done, whether they are done at the same time??? I would think not??
  7. You have me wondering now, but I am sure that it was an elbow score* trying to remember ph convo*...I will have to check on that. I suppose it really is buyer beware as the breeder was up front with the scores apparently after my neice enquired; she saw the paperwork. Hind sight of knowing a 2 score is dicky to say the least is a wonderful thing. I can't begin to understand what was said to my neice to make her think that a 2 was fine?? Maybe she just presumed that if the dogs were tested and then bred from that all must be ok...who knows? Thanks for the info re: the vet too. Thanks for the link too ILuvAmstaffs . I am going to print all this off for my sis to wade through and gleam what she can, and will update after my neice talks to the breeder/vet again. It is hard being a third wheel so to speak as I don't know all the ins and outs Thanks agian everyone
  8. I haven't read the report myself, so I don't exactly know which one it is. But the vet said about an operation, so I *presume* it is one that responds to an operation. Hopefully I will find out more very soon...
  9. I use the orangepower carpet cleaning liquid. It gets the carpet clean and I can't smell any urine...BUT I am sure the dogs can still smell their urine, as there is one place that they kept going to. Some say to use a product called "urine-off" that will break up the emnzenes in the urine, as will biozet washing powder ( dissolve some in a little water) I have had a fair bit of success with just the orange power carpet cleaning liquid stain wise, and then putting a little vicks vapour rub on a paper towel, and rubbing that over the area. I have only been doing that for about a week now, and have not seen one repeat accident where I have put it. I have seen the dog sniff and the turn away tho How old is puppy? You should be able to minimize accidents by taking the puppy outside for wees every 30 mins when little, and especially after a meal.
  10. Thanks for all the replies... Boston girl. how old is your mums dog now, and how long has he been on treatment?
  11. Puppy has never been chubby, except when really young...you know that age under 12 weeks where they look like balls of fluff? My sister has had GSPs for years and years, and they are fed a great diet. Her husband had Labs, abd they were very aware of not overfeeding the puppy. I saw him on the weekend, and I consider him 'just' covered really. Not fat at all. I don't know exactly what is fed, but their other dog is on eukunubra and some special diet stuff; I presume the puppy would be fed well
  12. I have no idea where the breeder got her scores done... She is keeping him quiet, and always has done really. I just want to get as much info as I possibly can for them, and I *hope* that they then got maybe to a different vet better informed to ask different questions to make an informed decission... Regardless, I think they will go to the specialist center in Logan? for any major stuff like the operation...I think that is the best place around here? That is where the xrays got read the first time. She is near Ipswich, the dog was bought northish of Brissy somewhere. Thanks again
  13. The xrays were sent to a specialist near Brissy to be read the first time...no xrays have been taken this time because of the diagnosis on the other elbow a couple of months prior. I have given my sis another vets name to go to, for a second opinion and also for xrays on this joint, tho they will still be sent to the specialist to be read again. I personally don't like the vet my neice goes to, but it is her call. thanks
  14. Hi All I hope someone can help and give advice  My sisters daughter ( my neice) bought a choc lab from a breeder in Qld. She sighted the scores ( bitch was 0,0 and dog 0,2) and the puppy was transferred to her on main register; my neice just wanted a family pet tho, so he will be desexed at some stage. The puppy went lame at 6-7 months, and the vet ended up xraying hip/shoulder/elbow left side. It came back as mild ED on the left elbow. He was given anti inflamatories etc, and he came good, so to speak. I presume that as it came good and also the vet did not indicate at the time how serious ED was, that my neice did not inform the breeder at that point. He went lame again but on the other side, over the weekend, and the vet said it is elbow dysplasia in both elbows now. The vet didn't xray that time, but is 99% certain ( so he says) The dog is only 10 months old now. Now my sister has been reading up, as the vet said most people would just PTS, but the puppy is just so full of life that they want to give him every chance. Apparently there is an operation that they can have, and good results are indicated if the dog is under two years old. Has anyone ever had this operation on their young dog, and what were the results? How do you manage? Joint guard? What vet treatments? From what I understand, the breeder implied that 2 was an ok score, when showing my neice all the paperwork. I presume it is not. I also do understand that even dogs with 0 scores all round can have a pup that gets ED/HD. She is ringing the breeder shortly to tell her what is happening. I also read in a post here *somewhere* that a score of 2 in a lab was BAD ....has my neice any comeback to the breeder? Handing the dog back is not an option, nor is PTS ( at this point in time) ...but should the breeder refund her money or at least part? This operation, if it happens, is going to cost $$$ I presume The whole family is ripped apart atm, as they thought they did the right thing by not going to a pet shop, and to rub salt into the wound, her ex bought a pet shop lab a few weeks after she did, that is perfectly fine ( at this point in time) Any advice/opinions greatly appreciated... Kym
  15. *wipes dog spit off fingers onto pappyloves pants...ick ick ick
  16. I have always fed brisket bones for at least 1 meal a week and usually as a bone treat once during the week as well. I have never had a problem with teeth and Murphy ( poodle x) is 13 years and the oldest pap Frodo is nearly two years old...the vet is pretty happy with them both. 2 yo pap 13 yo poodle x terrier Murphy has a little bit of buildup on his canine teeth and thats about it really.
  17. I taught high five to both paps...unfortunately I have gone wrong somewhere. They do high fives on command, but also when ever they want something, they will come up and just start slapping your leg etc I ignore the behaviour, but they still just keep on doing it SLAP SLAP SLAP SLAP..they seem to think that the high five action is what they have to do to get *whatever* :D
  18. *tears from the visual*
  19. I rang this mob the other day, and I was quoted $60 to do the test, with a health check up at the same time ...and the vaccinations are the same. I have had this confirmed by the Qld uni and also two vets. Same vaccine, same everything. The only thing I can think of is that vets are charging more to cover their 'loss' for two years. I have heard of one vet who charges almost $150 for the "new" 3 year vaccine!
  20. I bought a used one ( but not used iykwim) off ebay, for my pup.....I have had NO luck in getting him to toilet on it at all He recons it is a great place to chew bones on now tho
  21. West Moreton Vet clinic at Redbank Plains is VERY good. ( not sure if that is too far to travel tho) My vet sent me there to get another lot of xrays as their machine is very good, as are the vets. I found the vet I dealt with very knowledgable and caring, and had the time to explain what they found, even tho my dog was being treated basically by someone else. Price was on par with most.

    Puppy Behaviour

Yep he is starting with the other whole male...luckily he is fairly placid/tollerant, but he still puts him in his place. Thanks for the imput :D They are both getting 'done' about June.

    Puppy Behaviour

Thanks for the reply So I continue to do what we originally were doing; just flick him off and then get him to do something, like a sit? I thought that rolling him over is how the pack leader would tell him 'no' ??? He only does it when hubby has been away for a little while ( in his mind this is 10 minutes, lol) and he does it as hubby is standing there. Never when anyone is just sitting etc. He gets heaps of exercise...any more would kill me :D
  24. I have a nearly 6 month old whole male papillon puppy. I have not seen this behaviour myself, but my husband is telling me that Sam runs up to him and is humping his leg. He immediatly stops him and tells him no, makes him sit and then praises him. I was wondering, is this pup doing this as a dominance thing? Or is it a happy to see you/over excitement thing? He never has done it to me ( I am the main care giver etc) and I have only occassionally seen him try to do it, again just in the last month, to the other Papillon ( also a whole male) I am concerned that he is *maybe* considering hubby lower in the pack, and is just testing the waters with the other dog, so to speak. I have said to hubby that when he does it, to not just stop him with a no and a flick to get him off his leg, but to quickly roll him on his back and to growl no at him, then get him to sit, and then praise. Thoughts? Are we doing this wrong? My other pap never did this to any on us, just the occassional stuffed toy I don't want the little sod doing it to visitors etc if it becomes a habit
  25. I had a kelpie x that did the same sort of stuff :/ No other dog I have had has done it. Sorry, that probably isn't much help, nor a theory...but the common word in all the posts is 'kelpie'
