  1. If they won't take a pill when it's mixed in with their food, I usually put it in some meat, generally mince.... Willow loooooooves her mince
  2. Very similar symptons to my Sascha when she was diagnosed with Addisons..... but with those symptons it could possibly be anything... diabetes??? Obstruction?? Or nothing.... Good luck with him.
  3. yes, I would say so... I drove past the grounds today and there was one lonesome gazebo already set up lol. Thank goodness I am not entered, I am however am entered on Sunday at Erskine Park.
  4. What about a Brittany... or a Welsh Springer. I have two breeds, but in the same group, I think I'd find it difficult being in two groups.
  5. My latest golden puppy has been on Adult food since he was brought home.... there CAN be issues associated with raising golden puppies on puppy food - some lines more so than others. Nadine I don't think you would of done any damage to your little girl, at 6 months it's likely that you of noticed something by now. What puppy food is she on? I for one will NEVER raise a golden puppy on puppy food again.
  6. Is there a bunnings on your way to the breeders? could pick up one on the way there? Call and ask if they have any in stock though. Or you could check out some of the crates/pens on here: http://www.topbuy.com.au/tbcart/product/Carries-and-Houses-c161.htm If he's in there supervised (as in the lounge room) I'm sure he'd be fine, Henry sleeps in a soft crate every night, had a few days of trying to chew the metal braces but other than that he's never tried to destroy the crate..... he's such a good boy.
  7. only a month..... lol... when I was looking at getting a different breed to goldens.... it took me about 18 months to decide, then at the last minute I went with a LH Wei... it was a dalmatian up to that point!!!! And yes... get another crate... OR you could make a puppy pen out of bunnings compost bin's... the metal/wire ones.... you will need another bed of some sort in there though.... how long are you going to let the little tyke sleep up in your room with you.... and then where are you going to have him sleep after that? If he won't be upstairs for long with you, then lug it round, or by a smaller/cheaper one for the bedroom and then donate it to rescue once he outgrows.... or keep it for the next puppy :D
  8. That would be something she could discuss with the breeder/mentor. She has already bred 2 generations (several litters) so she knows the heartbreak. She would be encouraged to health test by me and I assume by the mentor/breeder. I was looking for places to point her in the right direction ... not a "would she do this and that and xyz"... I can't answer that. Encouraging is one thing, doing it is another. You will find if she DOESN'T do it, she WON'T be able to register a litter so she needs to be committed to doing it properly..... and no you can't answer those questions, but SHE needs to answer them honestly to herself and she needs to be aware that these things can happen, and worse before venturing into this kind of thing. Yes she may of bred several generations of labs, but different lines can give you all sorts of challenges. I know of one lab breeder - a well respected breeder at that, who sold a dog on main regsister to show and breed from... dog went lame and can't be shown, another one, in goldies, same thing. Both breeders did everything right.... health tests, bred from low scores etc, but shit happens sometimes. If she wants some direction - tell her to go to some shows and talk to lab breeders herself.... get to know them, and more importantly, allow them to get to know her..... get to know what breeders are breeding the type of dogs she likes. As Gayle suggested, give the lab breed club a call as another option.... Otherwise she will struggle to find a reputable breeder. If she prefers the working lines, go to obedience trials or Gundog working trials. Meet the breeders or owners there, if there are no breeders the owners will be able to point her to the breeders or working lines... There are 100's of lab & goldie breeders around, half of them nobody has ever heard of, there were 43 litters of golden puppies listed on DOL last month, most of them you wouldn't have a clue on who they are, they don't show, probably don't even do obedience with their dogs, they are just churning out puppies for the pet market, IMHO that is worthless.... how are they bettering the breed, how are they doing what is right for the breed?? All they are doing is saturating the market with dogs, possibly with temperament or health issues, and making it difficult for those, like your aunt, to want to get into the "hobby" because how is the novice mean't to know who is ethical and who is a registered backyard breeder? I'm not having a go at you or your aunt... maybe it's coming across that way, I'm not meaning it to, but yes, it is difficult, but she will need to do the leg work, and she will need to do the hard yards, she needs to gain the trust of breeders.... otherwise no-one will take her seriously, and she will be lumped into the backyard breeder basket. I think it's great that she wants to do it the right way, and it's great that your swaying her in that right direction, but it's not easy, and she needs to be aware of that.
  9. This post actually brings up a good point... What if you knew a certain color would not win as much in the show ring? I know if I were after a show quality GR I would avoid pale colors where possible. Same as Shih Tzus, solid colors do not do as well as their parti-colored counterparts. A very respected goldie breeder did say to me once, try and get colour (I was looking for a show goldie) - NSW judges seem to be very colour biased and don't go for pale colours. Even though it didn't matter to them at all and they do have more cream dogs then gold, they new I'd be fighting an uphill battle with a cream. Don't worry MP - if you ever want to rehome your white puppy I will take her.... as well as her brother lol ETA: I'll even take her mother
  10. well in goldens we can get gold or cream or any shade in between.... I was dead set against the creams for a long time.... but they have grown on me a lot so very open to any shade now.
  11. Is she willing to do all the health tests that go with it? Not 100% sure what labs require, but in goldens they require hip/elbow scores, as well as regular Heart & Eye checks.... I expect it will be something similar in labs. There is also a lot of heartbreak, even if you breed two dogs with perfect scores, shit happens and she may well breed a dog with hip &/or elbow problems that has come down from a dog further back in the lines. How will she cope with something like that? Is she willing to remove from the gene pool a dog that she may have bought to breed but comes back with crap health results? I think there would need to be a huge committment to show the dog before anyone would consider selling them a main registered dog.... if she is willing to start with a male she may have more luck....
  12. Another interceptor, I split a large on between my 4 month old and my little wei, yes she is little, only weighs 21 or so kilos... some say u shouldn't really split them, but my vet said you could, I'll keep doing it until he is big enough for one on his own. Only problem is it doesn't do ticks... and I found a tiny one on him last week!!!!
  13. Yes, the super-premium food. I have two bags of the stuff - but wasn't sure about using it on the little one, the others are getting it - I haven't noticed a difference, and Willow is actually eating it without an issue... we struggle with her eating her dry food. Not exactly sure what's in it though.
  14. At a show the other week we were given a 7kg bag of Hypro, does anyone use it. Doesn't look too bad, I have my puppy on eagle pack but am thinking about using this stuff as well, his skin/coat is a bit flakey on the eagle pack. Any opinions on this food???
  15. I bought one from vebopet - I lugged around everything without a trolley for the first year, but once Caesar came along I bought a trolley - best investment ever..... only issue is it's a bit tall so grooming the adult dog on it will be a challenge. Will manage though.
  16. One tip.... although it probably will be really cold.... get there early for a good park.... there isn't a lot of parking down close to the rings. sweepstakes are run first thing usually, all breeds of the same age go up against each other, you will need to go in number order, so this means that all toys will be in first, followed by terriers etc etc.. to non sporting... the schedule is on ozentries still if you wanted to have a look. http://www.ozentries.com.au/schedule/0511hillsdistrict.pdf 3-6 months according to the schedule will probably be in the gundog ring.... which should be fairly close to the far end. Toys are usually in the undercover area, non-sporting next to it etc etc all the way to terriers down the far end.... this is what usually happens, but it could change ETA: good luck - and have fun!
  17. KK - we are on Easter Saturday, just showing my LH Wei, my golden isn't old enough, by 4 days lol.
  18. All sorted, finally got around to emailing her and it's a giant bench - crate should fit lengthwise with the measurements she gave me. ETA: Thanks for the contact details.
  19. Thanks, that would also be an option. She's not very big, she'd fit in a 36 no problems, I just don't have one
  20. I had Willow in a crate last year but she was only in baby s/s, this year her crate is bigger. Just don't want to have to tie her to the bench. MP - what size was Evies crate, Willows is a 42in I think.
  21. I did do a search but couldn't find it. Anyone know how big te bench sizes are, I assme theyare ll abou the same size except for the toys - Just wondering if my large crate will fit on it, or if I will need to wok out something else.
  22. hmmm, hope I get them today then, a friend emailed me and asked me if I had mine, she hasn't got hers yet, and they didn't come today. I only entered Saturday. Thanks.
