I never said you made fun of me I am more than happy and eager to learn from experienced triallers like yourself and I hate to think that the times I've misunderstood or attempted to clarify something someone has said has made you think I have a "chip on my shoulder" or am reluctant to learn. Nothing could be further from the truth. Sure I believe in the methods I use, with the results I've had from using them of course I do! I do not however appreciate your "well intentioned" attempt to belittle or patronise me because you have misconstrued a comment I have posted in another thread. I've never been anything other than polite and friendly to you and each time I attempt to strike up a conversation with you, you completely shut me down. Lucky for me, I know many other trainers and triallers who are keen to teach "chip on the shoulder" and "know it all" newbies like myself

One of the reasons I post in the training forum is so I can learn from more experienced trainers/triallers like yourself. I'm not however interested in being shot down by people who don't know myself or my dog and at best have watched a couple of youtube videos I've posted and gotten a laugh out of them. I know it can be a bit of a joke when people see the breed I have but we both enjoy training and at the end of the day the fact my dog is happy to work is the most important thing to me. I know how far she's come and sure I'm inexperienced and we've got a long way to go but I am still proud of her, however amusing you may find it. You are the one who has assumed that when I talk about training in food drive, that it means I don't use play/praise, even though I have explained when bluntly questioned by you that I do... not sure how much clearer I can be??
-
When have I ever not listened to someone who is being helpful to me? Considering you have never met myself, or my dog, what methods do you think I am opposed to? Or is it purely because I don't hang off your every word and blindly follow your ideas that makes you think I am "closed to altnerative methods"?? Does having an alternative approach to training than you do mean that I am wrong or closed to methods other than the ones I am using? The method, by the way, that has made a massive difference to my dog - not that you would know, seeing as you haven't met either of us Am curious exactly what instances you are referring to, Bedazzled? Do you think everything I do with my dog is just something I've made up myself and not things I've learned from a number of other trainers and triallers? Seeing as I know my dog better than anyone else including yourself, I AM certain that training in food drive is the best way to get the best out of my dog. Have you ever trained a drivey scent hound before, Bedazzled? I would LOVE to see you come and train my dog simply using play/praise and get the same results I do when I utilise her food drive. I NEVER said that training in food drive is the only way to train her, but that it is the way to get the best out of her. Or do you think you know my dog better than I, and the trainers who teach me, do? Also curious where I said I can tell what drive a dog is in simply by looking at it? I have never and would never say such a thing. I would appreciate it if you didn't take the words out of my mouth I don't particularly care about the jargon, I use it for MY understanding only - as long as my dog is happy and working well that's the most important thing to me. You can put us down as much as you like but at the end of the day I don't need to belittle other people to make myself feel better

Bedazzled, I thought you were finished with this topic? Or are you only posting if you can further make fun of a trainng method/theory some of us find very useful?

PMSL Seita, you sound like Steve yes, anyone looking for Daisy should keep an ear out for her
-
Definitely I've seen you and Saxon around too. You can't miss Daisy and I, not many tan/white beags around
-
May I just say I am so excited to meet this epitome-of-evil that is your Daisy. From the way you talk im expecting her to be in a Darth Vader mask - lol. She's nothing exciting! This weekend alone she stole an entire packet of tortillas and ate them all in about ten seconds and then on Sunday, got into a box of home made coffee and white chocolate biscuits and ate the last six that were in there - and this is supposed to be my obedience dog
-
Looking forward to meeting any newbies and your pup staffylover, been a while since I've been to formal club trainig but Daisy and I will defintely be there first week back if you see us please come and say hi ETA: I am sure Daisy and I will provide plenty of laughs for everyone, she's not called the evil beagle for nothing

Breeder Wanting Puppy Back For Future Litters
huski replied to westozmike's topic in General Dog Discussion
Personally I wouldn't do it. When I buy a dog, unless I was going to show it, I would want total ownership and I wouldn't want to part with my dog for one or two litters. If I did do it I would want a contract drawn up to specify the amount of litters the dog would have and that I would have total ownership once she'd had those litters. And there is no way I'd buy a pup and still let the breeder have litters from her, I'd want the pup at a seriously reduced cost or free. JMO -
Yep, he's a big boy now.. 17 months old. How quickly it happens. Still waiting for him to grow a brain though You mean they grow a brain? :D
-
Is that Howard, PF? Gee he's gotten big! :D
-
Can't believe they took a photo of it :D Had it been my dogs I would have wanted the bloody thing off the dog ASAP.
-
Metro is back on Monday the 1st of Feb for anyone who is interested :D Will see you in class four, staffylover81
-
At ten weeks she's probably learning bite inhibition, not teething. Agree with others

Adding Distractions In Training
huski replied to laeral's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
You could get someone to squeak/throw toys as you are training or you could get a toy that moves or makes a funny noise too. Do you have any friends/family with other dogs? If you do, you could have her in heel position next to you or in a stay or whatever and get them to walk the other dog near by, around you, in front of you etc. -
Hvae you met many dogs of either breed? That can be a deciding factor too :D I still can't decide what my next dog will be :D

Adding Distractions In Training
huski replied to laeral's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Hey Laeral, have you started doing recalls in your TID program yet? Daisy's recall came along in leaps and bounds when we introduced it in drive. As for distractions, have you tried putting lots of interesting things on the ground, i.e. toys, food, etc? If I go somewhere with Daisy that is really distracting, I ask for the most basic focus (i.e. put her in heel position and get her to look at me) for a short time and give big rewards. -
I'm sure he'll be right once he gets stuck into training, you guys have a great rep Kissindra, I have no idea what you could possibly be referring to Unless of course you're talking about Daisy eating an ENTIRE PACKET of tortillas this afternoon that WERE for the picnic I was going on tonight :D She ate more than I could in a whole meal!

PMSL Kelpie-i! Another DOLer mentioned this to me a while ago I spelt it Huski so it could be easily differentiated from the breed name Oh and because at the time, Husky as a username was already taken. I have noticed a few DOLers misspelling it, I think I even put a disclaimer under my avatar about it for a while My excuse is you should all just call them Sibes like I do :D ETA: Did you tell him why you got it wrong??

My only "point" was that a dog displaying aggression can be working in a negative drive (i.e. defense drive). I didn't say that the signs or body language are always identical, but both can be going through the drive motor pattern i.e. - reacting to a stimulus, going into drive initialisation, drive peak and getting drive satisfaction. There have been many posters who have outlined what they think a dog training in drive looks like. I'm not resistant to the idea that it looks like anything in particular, I know it does. Others may have their own opinion, but I don't know how much more specific you can get past a video.
-
But that can hold equally for fear. I've seen a dog's pupils dilate the moment before it made an aggressive move. Because a dog displaying aggression can be in drive too, just a 'negative' one.
-
Staranais, thank you for articulating that so clearly I care about what drive I train my dog in because the point of our training is about teaching her how to get drive satisfaction. I couldn't do that without knowing how to motivate her and get her into drive. For anyone who does drive training, drive building is a huge part of it - teaching your dog that letting go and giving tonnes of drive is the best way to get satisfaction, before you even start giving commands. Part of doing this is teaching the dog that if they give you drive, you will give them drive satisfaction. To have a dog who switches on into drive just about anywhere, at any time, you need to be very consistent with how you build this drive so the dog has the confidence of knowing how to get drive satisfaction (not sure if any of that made sense??). And yep, people can criticise me for failing to articulate it in a manner that allows them to really get what I'm attempting to convey but at the end of the day, it works wonders for my dog and I (despite what some people clearly think) - I, and others who knew her before we started this training, see the difference in her and I am very happy with the method I am using.

Would like to go to this, but definitely not if it involves camping Does anyone know what topics are covered on either days? Do you have to go to both days?
-
If she spoke English and would stop long enough to let me try and communicate something to her I definitely would - but she literally runs past Daisy screaming/almost crying and it doesn't give me much of a chance to stop her. I will try and reassure her with a "she's friendly" and as friendly body language as possible next time though.
-
I wasn't facing Daisy Erny, I had her in classic heel position on my left side. We'd moved off the foot path and into a drive way so that we weren't close to the woman. My body wasn't blocking Daisy entirely though, I will try this next time for sure.
