  1. Still waiting for that big announcement, Steve
  2. I was thinking the same thing, or just that Corvus really really wants to find a way to get everyone to agree that Steve's drive training is "bad" It would hardly be the first time.
  3. You said what I was trying to but couldn't put as succinctly
  4. Could you further explain that reasoning? Are you saying her frustration and eagerness were building because you deprived her of anything else interesting in the world and so thus became the world to her? I didn't deprive her of everything that is interesting in the world, I just stopped walking her so I could harness all the energy I could in training. I didn't take her out or train her at any other time. This worked in favour of our training, because it meant she had tonnes of energy for me to use. Are you looking for an argument, Corvus, or are you using this thread to bait someone? Feels like the latter to me Each to their own obviously but I like to set my dogs up to win, when I am first training something I like to make it as easy for them as possible to learn what I want. I take the training I've done out and about when my dogs have a cue for it too, that's not what I was talking about when I said I train new behaviours at home before adding distractions.
  5. My understanding is that it's like just about any training you do, you start in low distraction environments and work your way up as your dog improves. I get my dogs working well and understand what I want in low distraction environments like my home, and then as they give me the standard I am happy with, I slowly transfer it to other areas. Time before distance before distraction. ETA: When it comes to building drive I did nothing with Daisy apart from drive building in the early stages (no walks or training at any other time etc) because it helped build her frustration and eagerness. If a dog has heaps of drive already, it's not as necessary, because you don't have to build it so much. It's about getting the dog addicted to drive training, it's not just keeping them confined to the house and doing nothing with them - you are doing heaps with them you are just giving them another outlet for their energy.
  6. Thanks Huski Is he really eight years old?? I hope Daisy is that frisky at eight! ;)
  7. Alex looked great Caffy! What a spunky boy.
  8. I hardly think adding my opinion is making it negative, it is a topic about dogs being protective, I just gave my view point - and I wasn't responding to the OP, but the poster who said they thought their dog would have killed the intruder it was barking at. I'm sure the OP realises her dog isn't a police trained dog, that was not the point of my post.
  9. Sorry but I highly doubt your dog would have killed the guy, or even seriously attacked him when it came down to it. Dogs aren't naturally protective in our sense of the word; they can be possessive but at the end of the day most acts of "protectiveness" comes from the dog feeling insecure themselves. I agree with Nekhbet, very few untrained dogs would actually step up to "protect" you, in most instances it's all noise and when properly challenged they have no idea what to do.
  10. I love the concept of marker training and have been getting more and more into shaping, but I am another one who uses 'yes' instead of a clicker. I'm really unco, so it's just one less thing for me to carry. I am still able to shape behaviours quite easily with the yes marker as the concept is the same as clicker training. I haven't read the book in the OP but I've been dying to for ages - must get a copy!
  11. Thanks, you won't believe the number of comments I get from people saying "OMG you're dog is sick!" because they don't realise just how excessive the shedding is for double coated breeds like Sibes, or people saying that it's cruel and I'm hurting them because they don't realise the fur I'm pulling out isn't actually attached to him I adore Sibes but honestly could not own more than one at a time :D the hair is just too much! My beagle sheds a lot but nothing like Micha does! Yeah he goes through a light coffee colour stage which is probably what he was in that pic, at the moment he is a light/tan auburn colour, he has some very interesting colour changes He definitely does! He was quite red when I saw him at the DOL meet you bought him to.
  12. Hehe, thanks! I get some weird comments from people but good to know some enjoy it
  13. Honestly people like that say those things because they wouldn't have a clue how to train or get the best out of the breed they are referring to. It shows so much about the calibre of the trainer doesn't it?
  14. Yep, the only other breed I can imagine that sheds more than a Siberian is a Malamute! ETA: Sonny looks grey in that pic!
  15. I would never recommend getting two pups at once and you will be hard pressed finding a reputable breeder who will let you have two pups at the same time anyway. Depending on the breed I would get the kitten first. I wouldn't trust my Siberian with cats if he hadn't been raised with them from puppy hood.
  16. Agreed! Not the same as tracking, but I get all sorts of comments doing obedience with my beagle. Some people think it's a bit of a joke and don't think you'll do well at it or ever be much competition. Proving them wrong is the best revenge
  17. I have tried bending down a little more towards her which works but obviously I don't want to do it in the ring! Will give that ago thanks LP  Thanks Ptolomy! I've been breaking it down since that training session to try and get her doing it properly. I will try looking at the cone
  18. LOL thanks Tiggy, I think it's pretty shitty, so I am open for any tips/constructive criticism
  19. Awww thanks Ptolomy :D Cider really is amazing! I only uploaded my latest vid cos I need my trainer's input (it's one of those 'halp I am having serious problems!' videos ) so it's not an example of good work for us. You can see the issues we were/are having; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7JQ7m0G2HW4 Figure eights are one of our weakest points at the moment although tonight Daisy did some lovely work and I didn't have any problems with her getting confused when she went around on the outside of the post so I'm hoping we are ironing out the issues. Not sure about four beagles although I swore my next dog would be a lappie or something other than a hound yet I am already looking at beagle lines and breeders trying to pick where to get the next one Lara sounds like a very special dog I'm lucky with Daisy as she is very forgiving especially when it comes to my crappy handling skills
  20. She looks fantastic Ptolomy! What a little star No way am I posting my latest upload after that
  21. It's not like people aren't aware that their dog is required to work off leash. I don't think it would be a bad thing to make trial grounds more secure especially if they are near a main road but it's not something I can see a lot of clubs doing. Is it really the club's responsibility or the owner's to ensure their dog is trained to a level where they can work off leash? Anyway I'm a dog sports noob so that's JMO

    Rocco

I bawled my eyes out reading this, what a beautiful and heartfelt tribute Serena. Run free handsome boy
  23. I've never really given much thought to trial grounds not being fenced TBH... I'm sure there are clubs out there that don't have the resources to set up fences for each ring and I don't think temporary ones would be particularly secure anyway.
