Would love to watch the vids Ness, are they on utube?
-
OMG Rubystar!!!! That's bloody fantastic Now where is the video???? Well done Caffy
-
She's amazing for 9.5 - she certainly doesn't look that old! Yeah even at training when I know people are watching us I get so nervous, and stressed, but stewarding tonight gave me a chance to watch a dozen run outs and it showed me it wasn't that scary And yeah it does help when you realise your dog isn't actually that bad :D
-
Sounds like they both did nice work for you Ness I always enjoy going to trials, I haven't stewarded obedience before just agility so it was a great experience. It also made me feel a lot more confident about trialling myself! Lucky I only had to run out into the rain for figure eights, the poor judge's pants were totally soaked through!
-
Congrats to Nik and Bedazzled! Just spent the last few hours stewarding at my club's obedience trial, it poured with rain the entire time Brrrr so glad I wasn't competing after all!!
-
I often feed Daisy one chicken wing as a meal, if they are bigger chicken wings and she's 17kg I agree with SK about adding more offal, other than that sounds good!

I read the OP and then came into the thread thinking "YAY! Beagle puppy pics!!!" and then I read the *whole* thing, and still no beagle puppy pics Charleswentworth, you got some splaining to do!

Try this one; http://s382.photobucket.com/albums/oo264/c...rt%20at%20home/ Gilbert is adorable

Stop trying to change the subject, do you want my dog or not?? ;) I've told Daisy she's going to Aunty Maree's, she's packing her things up in her crate now
-
I don't think it's a coincidence that when Daisy stuffs up her SFEs it's almost always when I'm filming it Did have a bit of a problem with her barking a bit tonight but that's fixable and she rarely ever does it now. The only other issue I have is one I have often which is she tends to do her stands and sometimes her downs on an angle as she tries to look up at me... but that is getting off topic I love it when they have that desperation, all they can think about is how to do what you are asking, I love that look and focus they give you!
-
I'm up for the challenge Wanna come and get her now? Or shall I drive by and drop her off for you?
-
No, not really worth a thumbs-up as we were just at home... but she had that desperation that I am after whilst still being neat and precise and worked well without me having any food on me. Sometimes it's good to have an "easy" training session to remind you they really can do it Now to get that all the time... (and when I say 'that', I mean both her level of drive and my confidence LOL - so much easier to be confident in your handling when no one is watching you :D) ETA: Maree how weird I have been a bit off the last two days too Must have caught it from you Just saw your edit Ness - thanks :D Loved your agility vid with Kenz!
-
Yeah Maree! You wanna train Daisy for me? Then you'll never be bored (having said that she was an angel tonight )

IMO, if you have a family pet with even a semi decent prey drive it can be dangerous not to teach it self control and channel that drive in a positive way. My dogs are all first and foremost family pets who are regularly around children, I feel more confident and feel I have more control with them because I have taught them to have self control when t comes to their natural instincts.
-
LOL thanks guys, this thread is a bit old though as Daisy's birthday was last October
-
I love the name Fledge too ;) She's gorgeous
-
IMO the issues you've mention only become a problem if you don't train drive games like tug appropriately. If playing tug is about the handler as much as it is about the toy, and you train self control with a start command, a kid taking the tug toy shouldn't matter.
-
RIP Spinner Thanks Sure she will - if my evil beagle can, any dog can Huski I sense a small amount of negativity sneaking in - what has changed over the last few weeks - what are you not happy with - anything we can help with? PS - nice SFE by the way Thanks Nothing really wrong, I think I am just having trouble with my confidence and I know it is impacting on Daisy. LOL you can have them, but then you'd have to have the rest of her too She did do some shocker SFEs last night (out of the ordinary for her, she is normally quite relibale with them) I just didn't put them on youtube She's not very fussed with people so SFEs and figure eights aren't a big distraction for her. Although BC4ME did smell like food last night!
-
A quick video with two SFEs on it from tonight; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwnLPubX9x4 Bout the only thing we kind of got right all night
-
Ahh, sorry, should have defined it. I mean the dog gets to take the toy from your hand and leave with it. This is the other thing I meant to mention earlier. Everyone I know who has trained their dog to work with a tug in prey drive, has a dog who sees them (the handler) as a big part of the game too. When they let go of the tug toy or throw it for the dog to get, the dog brings it back to them because without the handler the game doesn't exist. So even though you could let go of the toy so the dog could leave with it, the dog isn't interested in having the toy on it's own. I guess I also don't really see the difference between letting the dog capture the toy and tug with it and letting the dog run away with the toy. The capture and tug part is the part where the dog (by my understanding) gets drive satisfaction and their reward, which is why I see it as a win. Elsa: This thread might be a good read for you; http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?show...c=43795&hl=
-
Aidan, what is your definition of a letting a dog 'win' in a game of tug? IMO, every time I let my dog capture the toy I am giving them a win.
-
it's part of teaching the dog self control. Surely you can see the benefit in having command words to start and stop the game? Ending the game on your terms can also help increase drive and desire for the game, as opposed to letting the dog end the game when it's had enough.
-
IMO this won't be a problem if you teach prey drive games/tug properly. My dog won't touch the tug toy until I say 'ok' even if I am holding it centimetres from her face. She releases it as soon as I say 'give'. There are many "powerful-breeds" of dogs that play tug and are worked in prey drive, who do not have the problems Cesar reckons they will run into. If you want to use a tug as a reward you need to learn how to work your dog in prey drive with the toy. The best bet is to learn from an experienced trainer, K9 Force for example has a distance course you can do with your dog on training in drive (food or prey) that quite a few DOLers have used with great success... you can also look at joining a reputable IPO club.

K9: I will make sure you can get a copy any time you want one. Now are you being nice or is that another hint??? Stress is something I live with constantly you know the saying 1 BC is never enough well....... I have 4 of the buggers Puhlease, my one Evil Beagle trumps all four of your BCs Yep I got widescreened this week, it was quite a shock
-
Steve on a big screen - now that is scary He's already got the widescreen so chances are you already have been
