How To Help Dogs Gain Weight.
Danois replied to boxmeupboxer's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I use rice milk as it does not have the lactose in it and yes I think it has a higher natural fat content. I would also consider desexing. Once I took hormones out of my boy at 21 months (giant breed), the anxiousness reduced and the weight stayed on. I was feeding huge amounts of food - i.e 10 cups a day and he was so skinny. The performance/ working foods may be what you need. Once weight stabilizes you actually need to feed less. I now feed about 4 cups a day. -

Have you tried a performance food like Eagle Pack Power or a grain free food like Canidae. Is she a nervous/ anxious/ busy dog? Otherwise using chicken carcasses and lamb flaps works as well as making porridge with water in the microwave and then adding rice milk to make slushy and cool it down. Parmesan cheese/ normal cheese and full fat cottage cheese and yoghurt on food can help too. -
I was thinking of it a 5kg bag wouldn't last 2 golden retrievers,a whippet and a chihuahua long. plus 1 cup of the vets all natural mixed to a cup of raw meat seemed like alot of vets all natural mix to me, eg feeding more of the mix then meat. Given a 5kg bag lasts my 60kg dog around 40 days I am guessing it would last you as long if not longer.

Chillydogs in Canada does a long and lean range for whippets and Greys from memory. Their coats are popular with Dane people. I hate the weatherbetta ones too - too stiff and noisy!! I've just invested in a nice merino one from NZ - they tailor make if need be - d-fa dogs.

I grabbed 2 bags of the treat biscuits - chicken and the yoghurt, banana etc one as they were 2 for the price of 1. Have been really popular here and are a great size for a big dog.

I Finally Made My Own Raw Food
Danois replied to mumtoshelley's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Your dog does not need brown rice. Personally I would not feed pork to a dog either. Other than that - have you researched raw feeding to make sure you are getting the correct alance of minerals and vitamins etc that dogs need? Might be coincidence about the coat - it takes longer than a week for a change in diet to affect the coat. -
I use Delete - its brilliant. Not cheap but don't need much.

Homeless People In The City With Dogs
Danois replied to samoyedman's topic in General Dog Discussion
There are always a couple of guys near my work with dogs - one has 2 of them and the other just one. The dogs always look well looked after and you can see the bond. Probably in some ways a better life for a dog than the fate some get stuck in a suburbuan backyard with no stimulation/ much contact. -
A lot of Dane owners do not use head halters on young Danes due to the potential for neck damage. Remember they have a much longer neck than many other dogs. Body harnesses are not commonly used on Danes simply because you can't control a 50kg plus dog on one if it is hell bent on going the other way. Front attaching harnesses can be good if you are having issues with leash manners. Have you considered a martingale with a chain link - look at the ones on K9 Pro's website/shop. Almost every Dane owner I know uses one of those, a check chain or a flat collar (once leash manners are established) As I think I mentioned before - come into the Dane thread under the Breed Subforums as you can get breed specific advice there from experienced Dane owners.

I still reckon he has to be related to Boo! He looks like him in a couple of shots and then looks like his brother in the goofy one!

Oh that was Rolf with the chi!

LOL I think I know who you mean too and now avoid them. I travel to Pennant Hills from the Inner West for my vet. 35 mins in light traffic - about 1 hour 10 in heavy. If needs be I'd use the Uni in an amergency.

Lol at no cross bred dogs in Eastern Suburbs - its DD and rescue dog central! And Maroubra is not exactly the cream of the Eastern Suburbs.

Hi - if you are on FB then join us: http://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/ozziedanes/ask - many more experience dane people (breeders, rescue, vet people) than the handful on this forum

Itsmeg is the one who makes coats - she is a Dane person. She is on FB as D & D Dog Coats.

And that's the exact reason I use Pax! Boo has a ball there - gets fed fantastic food and starts whining in the car when he realizes where we are heading! Although I'm not sure if he is on the revised gues list!!

Off-lead Dog Parks With Lights - Sydney, Inner West
Danois replied to skully's topic in General Dog Discussion
Hawthorne Canal is to be avoided - it's feral. Last time we we went there for obedience - walked my dog past the cafe and he was set on by a pack of dogs. Have you checked the lighting at Peace Park in Ashbury? There is the fenced dog area but at quiet times I walk him in the park itself. -
Why the panic?? It is limited batch numbers which have been distributed to a few States in the US only.
-
Ha ha! Can I just say too - the people at d-fadogs are absolutely awesome to deal with! They are custom making coats for me at the moment. Great kiwi customer service.

Not technically correct. It is not an offence to have an unrestrained dog in a car. It is an offence to have a dog in the driver's lap. It is an offence not to have proper control of a vehicle and the police could ping you for having an unrestrained dog if it is interfering with your control. Relevant rule is 297.

Whoever asked about backpacks - Crumpler does one.

Have posted on Dane FB page!

Not that I have anything against prong collars but there is a huge amount which can be done between using a Haiti and a prong collar such as teaching loose lead walking. Danes have their own quirks when it comes to training. Whilst it is achievable, quite a few Dane owners I know are not able to get that intense focus as Danes are not necessarily a breed that is comfortable with that. You are never going to get a Dane working like a BC etc - they simply don't care enough LoL! I also think there has been a discussion on here recently discussing the merits of expecting a dog to work on an empty stomach - no energy results in a sluggish inattentive dog.

Isn't Pet Resorts out that way too?

Boo is not normally a bench surfer (noting he can rest his chin on the bench top!) - I left 5 homemade afghans ( a choc and cornflake biscuit from NZ) in one of those small sistema brand storage containers with the blue clip sides. Get home from work and the container is on the floor and contents consumed aside from a small amount of fudge icing smooshed into the carpet. But there is not one tooth mark or piece of damage to the container so somehow he managed to unclick the sides and get the lid off! Not a bad effort when your snout is about the same size as the container!!
