  8. A friend of mine in Canberra has a tiny little Maltese X who is excellent at agility.
  9. Thanks for the advice everyone - will re-read Steve's training doco and email him for some more pointers.
  10. I make every effort to keep her in - but accidents do happen and she has occasionally managed to get out. My other two dogs are allowed to come out with me every morning to get the paper - they sniff around the front yard and then come back inside with me when I tell them "in". This is what I would like to be able to do with Pip.
  11. Thanks for the help - the baby gate sounds like a good idea. I've tried ignoring her and sitting and waiting but as soon as she gets close, she zooms off again. Fortunately we live in a very quiet cul-de-sac where we know all our neighbours, who have been able to catch her in the past. Most of the time, she stands back from the door, but occasionally she will push the envelope.
  12. WE have a little Jack Russell X who, if she gets out, refuses to come to us or come anywhere near the house. We have been to K9 Force to work on her fear aggression, which is improving slowly and I also do the Triangle of Temptation with her, which she does very well. She sees it as some kind of game. She managed to slip through the front door before I even realised she was there. When she gets out, she runs up and down the street and comes to us but at the last minute zooms off. She is so quick that I can't catch her and usually have to leave the front door open until she decides to come home. I'm worried that she will get run over. This morning a neighbour managed to corner her on his front doorstep, otherwise I would have had to go to work and leave her out and hope someone would put her over the side fence. I've tried luring her with treats, her lead, our other dogs - all to no avail. I've tried putting her on a long lead and doing recalls - she is really good at them while she is on a lead, but hopeless otherwise. Any tips would be appreciated.
  13. Oh poor Jack and poor you. I do hope things will be OK for all of you.
  14. Amy - Kyzer is sooooo cute. I love the one on the beach. He's like one of those helicopters on the string that you can fly around your head. Gotta love terriers - they certainly keep you on your toes.
  15. I agree - go see Steve if you can. My little JRT X has improved out of sight with Steve's strategies. I don't think she will ever be comfortable around other dogs, but the improvement is definitely there.
  16. Kaos - you need to post some pics of Chico on the JRT thread - we haven't seen him yet.
  17. I've got 2 JRTs and have found both of them reasonably easy to train - you've got to find the right motivators. My male doesn't respond to food at all, but show him a tennis ball and he'll do anything to get it. He didn't like obedience class much (he was bored) and once I'd learned the basics I trained him at home. He has very good recall and I'm sorry now that we didn't try flyball when he was younger. The female is dog aggressive and I've had her to K9 force for behaviour assessment and I am now putting into place his strategies. She is responding well to this and is improving all the time. Good luck with the training - owning JRTs is a joy and as you well know, never boring.

    Oh My God!

I have been searching for a pair of black shoes of mine for about a week. I thought I must have left them in the car, until miraculously one appeared on the back doorstep. The other one is still missing, methinks, my little shoemonster Pip has taken it under the house, where I think one of my husband's slippers lives. I don't really have the inclination to be wanting to climb under the house, so I think I'll have to write that shoe off to experience. Fortunaely it wasn't an expensive pair.
  19. I've got 3 - 2 girls and a boy. The girls play very well together, the boy joins in sometimes, but most of the time he ignores them.
  20. We take our maltese X to P3 Grooming at the Fisher Shops. Karen only does small dogs and is very, very good. She charges about $60 and is totally devoted to the dogs. I would highly recommend her.
  21. Hi Sing Song I also have a fear aggressive rescue JRT X. She is fine with humans and our other dogs but turns herself inside out over other dogs. We took her up to K9 Force and it was well worth the effort. I am putting Steve's strategies in place and with a lot of effort in just a few weeks I can see improvement in her. I now walk her without the other 2 dogs and while she is still nervous, she's responding to me as the leader. I would definitely recommend giving K9 a call and get some training underway.
  22. Good news guys - I have an appointment with Steve from K9 Force on Saturday 14 July. I'm looking forward to sorting out the little monster's problems.
  23. Thanks everyone - it looks like a trip to Sydney. I've emailed K9 and hopefully will get the little monster in soon. Will delay ob classes until next session.
  24. Does anyone have a suggestion for a behaviourist in Canberra. A couple of people I know have used Dogtech but it looks to me as if they use the same methods on all dogs - i.e. not letting the dog on the bed, couch, restricting walks, not giving pats, etc
  25. We recently rescued a 7 month old Terrier x from the dogcatcher - someone gave her to the dogcatcher who no longer wanted her. He was on the way to the pound and asked my husband if he wanted her for free! Anyway to cut a long story short, she has some behavioural problems. I have booked her in to start obedience in the next couple of weeks but thought I would ask here for some advice in the meantime. If she escapes (she's as quick as lightning) there is no way I can catch her. She has got out the front door twice and a neighbour caught her. On Sunday she managed to slip out of a harness (she can also slip her collar very easily) and took off up the street. I called and chased and it took 15 minutes until my husband came with the car to catch her. It's as if she doesn't know who I am and completely ignores me. She is totally focussed on getting away from me. I've tried food and that hasn't worked. She won't acknowledge my other 2 dogs and they can't lure her to come back either. She is very aggressive towards other dogs. She's fine with my other 2 dogs and plays with them happily, but if she gets near any others she lunges, snaps and growls. I'm guessing that this is probably a fear thing. Hopefully we'll be able to sort it out at school and I have spoken to them about it and they are happy for her to attend. As we don't know what her background is, I don't want to do the wrong thing. I would be grateful for your ideas.
