  1. We have this: http://www.amazon.com/North-States-Superya...0367&sr=8-3 Very sturdy and can be adjusted to whatever configuration you desire. We don't need it anymore but are hanging into it as it will come in handy when we have kids one day
  2. I'd recommend clipping at a maximum of every 2 months. I think every 6 weeks is better. You can learn to do it yourself. The gear isn't cheap to get but its less expensive in the long run than paying someone else to do it. Best to start pups off with a professional though - a pup and a learner groomer isn't a great combination. The head poms are scissored by the way. But if you'd even consider a poodle, there are probably lower maintenance dogs with some sort of coat. Poodles do best with plenty of exercise - even the Toys will walk your legs off given a chance. High exercise, how would it cope if taken for 3-4 huge walk weekly? Or is it a daily requirement? Would a backpack with a bit of weight help(to double up their exercises?)? Poodles aren't up to weight bearing. They're simply not built for it. Personally I'm no fan of back packs on any dog. What smart dogs like is variety - they get bored with the same walks. Mix it up, add some training, some ball games etc and they'd cope with that many walks. They just do better with more. If you got a poodle, what size would you aim for. I'd not go larger than a mini with the exercise you're proposing. The standard being the larger one - Obviously it wouldn't be for me - I can do lots of play, but wouldnt want to walk 12 km everyday(thats my aim 2-4 times a week, only if my health allows me too, otherwise it will be as it is now, my 30 minute fast pace , but in a few years I could do more than that as I would be by myself all day long, so I could do up to 3 x 30 minutes fast pace walk daily. But by the sound of it it might not be enough for a high exercise type of dog..? At the moment, I'm looking at breeds considering my present circumstances...but in 6 or so years I will either be better or worse(hopefully not). Our standard is 6 months old and currently gets walked 30 mins to an hour a day (2 walks, mixture of on and off lead). The rest of the time she is happy to lie around in the house or play in the yard. Other standard owners may have different experiences but I wouldn't consider mine a high exercise dog.
  3. Here you go. 9/10 people ask if she is a labradoodle, the rest ask if she's an Irish Water Spaniel. Maybe only 1 or 2 people have gotten it right, but those have always been other poodle owners as a scruffy puppy shaved, and still mistaken for a doodle in-between Being asked doesn't bother me, people are polite about it and I just tell them she's a standard poodle
  4. I am pleased to say that we have not smelled stinky fish butt since my original post. Hoping it was just a one-off / infrequent issue
  5. We have a (growing) standard poodle so I guess she'll eventually be a larger breed. It's a heck of a lot cheaper to keep a large dog in the States than in Australia Food - $25 including kibble and bones Treats - around $15.. she goes through a couple of bully sticks and beef tendons each month Worming - $5 for Interceptor Flea and tick preventive in summer - $7.50 for Advantix Grooming - We groom her ourselves but the starting expenses were Wahl KM-2 clippers $120, set of clipper combs $35, pair of Dubl Duck scissors $60 and a couple other odds and ends
  6. You could try the Squirrel dude... our dog trainer recommended it at puppy pre-school for dogs that chew kongs up too easily http://www.amazon.com/Premier-Squirrel-Dud...e/dp/B000A63P5Q

  8. standard poodle (might be too big) or a lagotto
  9. Our pup is crated in our bedroom and she has slept through the night since 8 weeks. Only on one or two occasions has DH let her out at night On weekdays we sleep 10.30 - 7ish On weekends we tend to go to bed later but she usually goes inside her (downstairs) crate and puts herself to sleep at the usual weekday sleep time, then she sleepily climbs upstairs with us when it's our bedtime. She's pretty flexible with her waking time too. If we sleep in she'll sleep in too and doesn't make any fuss about it
  10. She is a healthy dog and has firm stools. This has been a non-issue until a couple afternoons ago she was licking her butt and then there was that smell. If I leave it alone will it take care of itself the next time she poops? Also, how do I tell if they do become impacted/need human intervention?
  11. A couple days ago I smelled something fishy around my pup and sure enough it was her anal glands. So DH expressed them and she's been fine since. He took her in to get her final puppy shot yesterday and casually mentioned to the vet that he had expressed the dogs anal glads just the other day. The vet came back and insisted this was a big NO NO and to leave them alone to express naturally. And that if we humans messed with them too much they might lose their "elasticity" and not be able to express themselves naturally. We've had other dogs before and have always expressed their anal glands when they needed to be and have never been told by any other vets not to do them. I checked with the breeder and she says my vet is wrong also, and that if we just left them alone they could get impacted/infected. I'm inclined to take my breeder's advice over the vet's (same vet who tried to sell us on science diet junk so I don't find much validity in his advice). What do you do? Do you express them or just leave them be?
  12. I have to brag we have had our puppy for 4 weeks and it has been SO easy. She pretty much came potty trained already and slept through the night from day 1. Crate training was easy, she walks nicely on leash, doesn't mind getting groomed, loves going for car rides and meeting new people/dogs. She also hasn't destroyed anything and is learning new tricks and commands every day. Please please stay this good
  13. Has she been vaccinated or had surgery recently?
  14. I had my dog desexed today and picked him up an hour ago from the vet. He has been fine but I noticed his stitches have started seeping blood - is this normal? I have been trying to get hold of the vet but the line is busy
  15. My lagotto is from the same litter. Sorry to hear your boy has bad hips, I didnt know the mother had bad hips so I guess I am lucky that my girl hasnt had any problems
  16. There is a Lagotto databse here with some scores: http://www.lagotto.hu/english/database.htm I'm not sure how updated it is but I was able to find my dog on there
  17. She used to be a show dog and the breeder kept her in show clip year round but now she is a pet we like to keep her clipped short since it's easier for us to manage. The usual routine is- brush/comb her out, shampoo with Fido's Oatmeal & Baking soda shampoo, blow dry, clip and a final spritz of water. We keep her body short, legs fuller and her face and tail neatly trimmed
  18. Yes, my family have a Lagotto which we groom ourselves. What would you like to know?
  19. dried pig skin rolled into twists. They used to take Jager hours to chew when he was a pup but now that he's a stronger chewer maybe 10mins? Petwise used to carry them but they havent had them recently which is why I decided to try bully sticks
  20. Thanks for the ebay link! I ordered them yesterday and got them today. They don't last very long though.. both my dogs gobbled them up in less than 5 mins =/ I might go back to giving them pork twists
  21. dried bull penis I think thanks for the info Kissindra and molasselass!
