Another vote for pricelesspets. That's where we've got all our worming tablets from.

Sally licks her paws every night before she goes to sleep, I didn't think there was anything wrong with it, it was just something she did before she settled into bed for the night? I thought it might relax her, or she doesn't like getting into bed with dirty paws. She was licking one paw a lot when she hurt her claw, but that healed up and she's just back to doing her nightly clean before bed.

We feed half a cup in the morning and half at night.

Is It Safe To Give Dog Human Anti-histamines?
Asalei replied to StaceyB's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Are phenergan and Polaramine the same thing? After Sally got bitten by something a few weeks ago, and I gave her a telfast tablet, I decided I'd go buy some phenergan to keep in the cupboard. But, reading this, people use polaramine. Wonder if I can take it back and change it over? They are only 10mg tablets. -
We also did what Luke Dixon said. They now run through the doggy door and I don't know how they don't get concussion doing it We've got some foster dogs at the moment as well and they had never used a doggy door before either, now they love it! We had to lure them out with treats first, one of us on either side showing them how it's done. A little bit of watching the girls, and they've picked it up. Only took a day or two for them to work it out.

The vet didn't seem to think it was her anal glands, he expressed them and said they looked fine. It was interesting that he didn't use gloves and lube. Just gloves and some paper towel. The other vet that has expressed the glands actually puts his fingers in and uses lube. Anyway. He seems to think she may have been bitten by something? But we aren't so sure, last time she was bitten by an ant, she went nuts for hours and I had to put ice on her foot to at least calm her down. Doesn't explain the tail being down. He gave her an anti-inflamitry and to keep an eye on her for 48 hours and go back on Friday if she's still a bit funny and they will investigate further.

We've got an appointment at 4:40pm this afternoon. We tried last night to express them ourselves, but we sucked at it and Sally wasn't liking the undignified playing around of her bum. I hope my OH finishes work intime... I'm not liking the idea of taking 3 dogs to the vet alone.

Sorry, I just meant problems in general with her glands. She's not lifting her tail and just seems to be in discomfort around that area. She keeps licking her bits too. I'm ringing the vet when they open to see when I can get her in. She doesn't seem as restless as she was last night.
-
Looks like she may have a problem again. We've been feeding BARF patties every few days and it seems to have blocked sooner than last time! The vets are closed now except the emergency vet. Is it bad to leave her till the morning? Will it do any damage? Or is it just discomfort for her? I might go to the health store tomorrow and buy some physillium husk for them.

Wow, I'm in shock. I'm so sorry Sammy RIP Fergus

Well, I had 180mg tablets, and I gave her half. So I gave her 90mg for a 14kg dog Oops. I might go to the chemist and get some phenergan. Thanks
-
Is the phenergan human stuff or dog stuff? And where can I get it from? I'd like to have some on hand just incase for future.

I might have to do a scout around the yard at beagle height to see if I can find a nest or something.
-
Well, I'd already given her half a telfast tablet when I saw your post. I kept an eye on her all night. The area seemed to soften out (not as hard as it was) and the swelling reduced before we put them to bed. She looked almost normal this morning when we got up. I don't know what it was, but she didn't seem too bothered by it. She wasn't scratching at it and was acting totally normal.
-
I've got home this afternoon to one beagle with a very fat lip. I'm just wondering whether she's been bitten by a bee or ant or even a mozzie and it's swelled up? We've looked in the gum to see if there was still a stinger in there, but we couldn't see anything. Can I give her an antihistamine like Telfast? That's all I have here. Will it help her, or should I not bother? I have the 180mg tablets.

Hrm, maybe I should get it removed. I asked if it would grow back and he said no? He said it had only slightly been torn away from the nail bed and would be okay. I don't even know how she did it! It was dark when we got home and noticed the blood and I was going to go out the next morning and look around the yard. I woke up that morning and it was pissing down with rain so there wouldn't have been any blood anywhere.
-
I've rung him, but he's in a consultation. The receptionist (who's his wife) was going to let him know I'd rung. I hope he rings back. She suggested to stop the licking. I cut the claw the other day as it was now a little longer due to being pulled out a little and she didn't like that at all. If the nail is growing, does that mean that it's healed?

Last Tuesday (12th February), I got home from work to find blood on the white sheet on the lounge. OH didn't see it. (reminds me of that ad on TV, what, you didn't see a charter boat? Charter boat, what charter boat?) Bright red blood on a stark white sheet. Anyway. We started looking over the dogs, noticed Leia had a reddish patch on her white neck and we were looking all over her. Looked around at Sally and she was holding her paw up. She'd some something to her paw. On closer inspection, on her left front paw, the first nail on the inside (not dew claw) was bleeding. It was obviously hurting, but no vets were open. The next day she was limping worse, but still running around the back yard playing. So we took her to the vet and he thinks she's just pulled the claw away from it's bed, but believed it wasn't enough to warrant removing the claw. She was given a pain killer/anti-inflam needle and sent home with antibiotics. We were told if it got worse or she was still limping by Saturday to let him know. She's not limping, but it's obviously annoying her. She keeps licking it. Is this just a habit now? Or is it her way of trying to stop it hurting? Does a claw go brown or die if it's taken away from the nail bed? I'm not sure what to do. Do we need to have it removed? Or is she just remembering that it hurt? She always licks her paws before she goes to sleep at night, just that little thing she does. But she's licking this paw everytime she sits/lies down. If it's not hurting her and she's just licking for the sake of licking.. if it nails been pulled away, is this going to create any type of fungal infection or something? I wish they could speak and tell us what's wrong!

Survey: How Long Does A Bag Of Dog Food Last You?
Asalei replied to jaegertheweim's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Breed and age: Beagle - 14 months old Product name, size and cost: Royal Canin Medium Adult - 15kg - $85 Daily amount fed: 1.5cups each How long does the bag last: approx 8 weeks Average cost of feeding/week: $10 Anything to add: They get chicken wings every night ($4 a kilo) and I'm just going to start feeding brown rice/carrot/sardines/egg mixed with their food. Vet advised to do this to try and help with their anal gland problems. -
Oh no :D Very sorry to hear about your loss. Hugs to you and your family. RIP Choppa, run free
-
Tell me about it belgavin! I have a new found fear of them getting into the house now and expelling all over the lounge! Time to go to spotlight and get that plastic I've been meaning to go get for the last couple of months.
-
I don't know how well we'd go with doing it ourselves, as Leia is petrified of the vet now because her first vet appointment was her anal glands. Sally might be okay. I always thought you have to put your finger in their bums to do it. If you just have to squeeze from the outside, I might just be able to do that. Might need to put a gas mask on.
