under the trainer i use all of his dogs are trained to bark and hold i couldnt tell you a number because i havnt asked him but with police dogs jeff jones would be able to answer that but i know thay dont use bite and hold the only place that i know of that still use that method is the US and they are now starting to fase that out

kavik you are right with what you are said excpt with the bark and hold but thats my opinion

asking around and showing that you are keen to do it and do it well would be a good way to start like you said some handler/trainers have other dogs they train with not just there work k9 the other thing is trainers that train sec and protection k9 are oftern up for a challenge (not all) the difference between dog sport and protection dog is one is trained for all most any thing goes and the other is train for a routine they have both have a high disapline needs to be successful and if the trainers are willing to laurn the rules with you your nearly there this is the short hand vers the long hand vers is a lot harder to explane

go to your local leather man or sadle maker with a lead design u like get them to make it 20mm wide make sure its made out of the leather they use for horses shouldnt cost to much i have mine made up

i have never seen one before untill i looked it up but i would just use some 15-20mm bamboo bunnings have them for a few dollers but to me it looks like something u do for a party trick see how straight you can walk after using it

just do x10 at 5 to 10 seconds when all ten are done with out a mistake (reward with food when no mistake is made) when done do another x10 and adding 5 to 10 sec with out a mistake and follow that method if your dog makes a mistake start from the start and always finish on a high for the dog there would be others but thats all i can think off at the moment

the correction can be a simple yank on the lead not hard enough to move them of there feet but enough to change there focus you dont need much and no it dosnt have to be a check chain a flat coller will work but i do think the about turn to change focus and food to reward to be easyest method

dont use the harness they premote pulling for a start there are a few ways you can do the 2 ways i like doing if he can heal nicely for a bit good when he plays up you do an quick about turn and walk were you came from untill he has focus again then about turn again and keep going or you can try food when he heels nicly you reward him with some nice treats if he mores foward correct him and when your happy give a treat or you can include the first one or try the no pull head collars (i havnt tryed any of theys so i cant give any advice)

use a roll up towl move it around ur feet get the dog chasing it and then let him hav it and start tuging easy

the harness i use for tracking is the same as i use for bite work for my security k9 training you can find what they look like on the fordogtrainers web site i also just got a nylon tracking/carting harness of them to try carting with and iam very happy with it very simple and strong i havnt used black dog one but i have been told by different people that they are good

it depends i like to use a leather harness because they last longer i just found the design i liked and went to a leather man and he made it up for me or you could get a blackdog harness or a fordogtrainers.com harness

i would talk to mark s or k9 force about it because you can teach just about any dog to bark at the end of the lead if you tell it to so i cant see why you cant teach them to alert to people when they come round but if you do that it could get on yours nerve a bit to because it will do it to every one the kind of dogs i work with do it on there own so so i havnt lernt how to do it by the way in there is a BC that does schutzhund Europe so they can do it if you ask them to

some people might call it that but a character test are a bit different i dont know many people that use it beside the RAAF there wourd be others though but like you said they are to test the dog reactions to certin test and if they dont reach the level needed it gets passed on and they get another dog i wanted to have a go with my rottie just for the experiance but my trainer told me he would pass so i left it at that

schutzhund, knpv,security,police k9s and a few other dog sports are all about protecting the handler no one wants a dog to attack any one but to protect some one is different i dont mean to come across arigant(?)

i dont mean to be rude to any one but i hate it when people say attack work/training its protection work/training the reason is it gives some people the wrong impression of what the sport is about same with security training

i think its called the falcon or falcom method named after the person that came up with it there are some books on it i dont know the aurthers of any of them though it about seting aside the the daily portion of food and using it on a reward basis for trainig and working dogs
