  1. When it comes to dog bites/attacks/killings - the council doesn't distinguish between private and public lands. Technically - yes the dog can be declared dangerous for killing the cat ... even if it is safely contained in its own yard but one would hope common sense should determine that because the dog was contained and the cat was an unwelcome visitor ... the dog shouldn't be punished ... but since when has common sense come into play. According the Brisbane City Council - my dogs can be declared dangerous if someone sticks their hand under/over/through my fence or if they climb over my fence and enters my yard (even without my permission) and is bitten by my dogs. It mainly depends on the determination of the inspector/investigator.
  2. That's a pretty powerful dog. Trying to justify it with stating the size of the dog doesn't make sense to me.It's not your concern why they had their Police Dog with them....a Police Dog is a Police Officer. I don't think this is correct. My understanding is that a service dog is normally considered to be equipment, same as a gun, taser, pepper spray etc. Disabled persons' assistance dogs are legally medical appliances, not humans. Police dogs are not "service dogs" - they are K9 Police Officers and as such an assault on a police dog is the same as an assault on a police officer.
  3. I find roo and marrow bones can cause the runs at my place ... chicken frames, chicken wings, turkey wings, turkey necks and brisket bones are the preferred here - but they don't last all day and are usually fed as a frozen bundle. Maybe some dry food in a soft drink bottle...
  4. Maybe grab a sample next time he goes and just take it in for a quick check. My vets don't even bother charging for the occassional pee stick or the sample pot to collect it in. :D
  5. Turkey necks and turkey wings are a favourite here ... actually any raw food is their favourite
  6. You normally just need her current vaccination certificate. I have lost our boys certificates numerous times - when needed I just ring the vet and ask for another copy. They can check their records and issue another one.
  7. My 2 year old does the same ... he will dig a hole, get told off and as soon as you turn your back he is back into it. Gardens have been fenced off and he is given an area which we allow digging. Any holes that are dug in areas we don't want (such as a tunnel under the pavers) as fill with poo.
  8. Usually ignoring the bad behaviour and rewarding good behaviour is sufficient for a young pup. A squirt of water can stop some undesired behaviour but again you would then need to redirect.
  9. I tried the salt, vinager and dishwashing liquid ... they died off but it didn't take long for them to grow back. Might get myself a flame thrower thingy ... that sounds like fun
  10. Maybe it is something that can added to a harness? It is a good idea for maybe a foster dog or even a new dog that while you believe the yard is safe ... it might be the first time they are left unattended in the yard or during fire works or storms. A bit of extra insurance as such. I like the idea of the text message if the dog leaves the "safe zone" - so you find out asap and not when you get home. I would like to see it a bit smaller ... it looks awful big and bulky.
  11. My boys breeders got a few emails from me with updates such as when they arrived, after a week or so when they had settled in and a couple of progress reports on how they were growing etc. I never got anything back from them but I opted to sent the updates anyway - they got updates at least every 4 months or so until they were about 2 yrs. I was a little disappointed when they didn't seem interested enough to respond.
  12. I something get the limping ... only problem is he can't aways remember which leg is supposed to be sore When he gets told that he is faking it ... he gives up the limp for a nice game of ball. When we had a serious issue of the younger dog getting pushed into the pool accidentially by the older dog - it was the older dog who came running to the back door barking to get our attention and then took my hand in his mouth and took me to the problem.
  13. Definately much better to deal with the problem now with surgery rather then down the track if infection sets in. Once infection gets in ... it is just too close to the brain.
  14. Lenards Chicken at Brookside can order 18kg of feet for me ... but they are frozen which means partial defrosting and refreezing - which I just don't like doing. Any other ideas?
  15. Any ideas where to get Chicken Feet from? ... I have called Lenard's Chicken (well they sell everything other bit of the chook so why not the feet) - but so far it is a no-go. Waiting to hear back from Lenards at Brookside as it has been suggested their supplier may be able to get some. Any suggestions? Looking for 6 to 10kg at a time ...
  16. My youngest drops weight over night if I don't rug him up (nice warm doggy coat) at night - so if Brutus won't wear a coat make sure he is in a warm place when it is cold. Some days you can clearly see all my boys ribs ... he could make a greyhound look fat! We need to feed our boy at least twice a day with snacks ... he is currently eating 4 cups of Canidae (Grain Free Salmon) and about 3kg of a variety of chicken frames / lamp flaps / fish (whole fish - head, guts etc) / BARF etc per day!!! I believe as long as there is no medical condition for being so thin ... it isn't always a bad thing - for a large dog it is better on the hips/joints. Some dogs are naturally skinny (just like people).
  17. http://www.couriermail.com.au/ipad/gps-collar-finds-stray-pets/story-fn6ck51p-1226091442311 A GPS pet-tracking device has been launched by the RSPCA in an effort to curb the number of stray animals that end up in shelters each year. RSPCA refuges take in more than 30,000 dogs, cats, kittens and puppies each year across the state and authorities are hoping the device will reduce the number of lost pets. The small device, which costs $269, can pinpoint a lost pet within about 10m and can be attached to any animal's collar using a waterproof plastic case. The TrakaPet GPS Animal Tracking System keeps owners informed of their pet's movements by texting map co-ordinates to a sync-ed smartphone. They can then be plotted on to Google Maps. "Safe zones", such as a backyard or home, also can be programmed into the device. As soon as the animal leaves the area, its owner will receive an alert via SMS. RSPCA Queensland chief executive Mark Townend said TrakaPet was not a substitute for proper pet care, but allowed owners to keep tabs on their "little Houdinis". "Obviously we encourage pet owners to make certain their animals are kept secure but this is an excellent back-up," Mr Townend said. "Despite their owners' best intentions, we have some pets that manage to escape on a regular basis and end up at the shelter." The device allowed RSPCA Queensland senior veterinarian Anne Chester to locate her poodle, Ned, who recently disappeared for several hours from her semi-rural home south of Brisbane. The GPS device attached to his collar allowed Dr Chester to track him down to a nearby property in Beaudesert. "We just turned up to their place at 8.30pm with our laptop and gumboots and told them our dog was in their back paddock," she said. "We'd never even met them." Dr Chester said her three dogs no longer left the house without the locator. "If I've been a bit slack and haven't charged them up, they don't get to go out," she said. TrakaPet kits can be bought at the RSPCA World for Pets store at the Springwood Centre at Underwood or online at www.worldforpets.com.au. All profits go to the RSPCA.
  18. Carrot is a filler ... I would be replacing carrot with real food. He certainly needs it.
  19. I have a heap of stuff in my doggy first aid kits. I brought a first aid book and then went through the treatment for the range of injuries the boys could have and made sure I had sufficient supplies to treat each. Injuries could be ... cut foot through to snake bite and being hit by a car. There is also a copy of the first aid book, tick removers, recharge (electrolytes), lots of zip lock bags, doggy toilet bags, wet ones etc. I have 2 dogs ... so therefore there are 3 kits. One for each of the dogs and that kit goes with the dog - so if I have 2 dogs in the car then I have 2 first aid kits with me (actually 3 because I always have a trauma kit in my car). The third doggy kit stays at home - to be taken if one of the other 2 kits has been used and needs restocking. Maybe I am a little paranoid but after having one of my boys cut an artery in his leg and cleaning out multiply kits because there was insufficient dressing to cope with the injury. The next day I would out and made sure it never happened again.
  20. We have put a fence down the middle of the yard so our dogs can't go near one of the side fence because the visiting kids were throwing stones at the dogs - the dogs were starting to react when anyone was in the yard. We can now choose when the dogs have access to that side of the yard ... and it allows us to spray the lawn with weed killer without the dogs having access to it. We are now having issues with the neighbours on the other side (lets just say years of alcohol abuse is catching up with him) so we have double paled the timber fence, put a no-bark collar on our dog (to record how often he barks) and are now considering setting up surveillance cameras to monitor the situation. I know it is a pain but removing your dog from the situation is probably best ...
  21. And the solution is .... you are going to take the little BRAT ;) I will call you tonight - many thanks
  22. I am having a short holiday next week with my youngest dog - we are going to Tailwaggers Rainforest Retreat at Coolangatta. There is self contained cabins (where dogs are allowed inside) with a smallish fully fenced yard. It is located within 77 acres and there is a reasonable sized fully fenced off-leash area as well as a number of walking trails etc.
  23. Bugger ... I suspected as much The annoying thing is they won't give us two bottles ... then they wait 3 weeks to order it - the dose he is on means the supply will last 31 days. It is the week between when they order it and when we need it that it becomes a problem - the stuff they order doesn't always arrive when it is supposed too ... and I don't want or need a grumpy, sore and very unhappy dog at home if the order is late again. Might need to have a serious chat with the vet as it just isn't working this way - I don't want to have a referee fights at home because Mr Grumpy Bum is in pain.
  24. Our older boy is on low doses of Meloxicam (oral suspension) for degenerative arthritis ... the problem we have is getting a regular supply form our vet. We order it from the vet but it never arrives when it is supposed to and regularly takes multiply calls etc to actually get it and it is usually after our existing supply is gone. And then of course the vet is closed between 12noon and 4pm - which is the only times my brother can get into the vets to collect it. So if I can't collect it on a Saturday morning then it is another week before I can pick it up or I have to take time off work. I was thinking about ordering it online and having it delivered to me at work ... but as it is a prescription only drug - can I order it online?
