Border Collie Club Herding Trial
whatevah replied to fidelis Border Collies's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
She holds them to a fence. Have found that she is better working in a larger area, but the lady who saw her problem said we have to work on it in a smaller area. Have found she works dogged sheep much better bringing them to me than the more feral ones, she will stare at. If she was having trouble in agility say with a tunnel I could work on it during the week and bring her up to speed, but with herding I don't have any sheep to practice on. -

Border Collie Club Herding Trial

We are in Melbourne. Have found that she works better is a bigger paddock but they said she needs to work in a round yard to fix it. Tried her on ducks and she did the same thing. I can poke her and she will ignore me. A rake means nothing to her. -

Tia got her HT title. But we are giving herding away now, she sometimes does this sticky eyed thing where she just goes up to the sheep and stares at them. She did this on the 2nd day but luckily not in the two trials on the first day. As I don't have stock to practice on and get her out of this new habit we are giving it away. -
This is how its done. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxVRazdr0Bc You need a body of water with a pier on it, Altona Beach has one of these. I would be interested Josh is a natural. You also need to measure out how far each dog jumps.

Steph can look after Barker for you.

I will tell Steph to take good care of him.

Sorry to hear about your loss Kristie, I only just saw this. Please do not blame yourself or go through the what ifs. He had a lovely home with you. Please don't be thinking about going with him as you have a husband and other dogs to look after. Spend all your attention on the other dogs. We really have to make each day count because we never know when it could be the last for one of our dogs.

Here is a great free site for putting up a tribute to him. Here is an example of my daughers one. http://stephanie-gestier.gonetoosoon.co.uk/ Very sad to hear about him. Just be careful what you post in this section as I posted something for Steph and media found it here and put it in all the papers and TV. Luckily Troy moved it to Off Topic. Much safer there.

Can Anyone Recommend Some Good Videos Or Books
whatevah replied to jesomil's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I found a good one called "Games to Enhance Training" on the clean run site. http://www.cleanrun.com/index.cfm?fuseacti...p;ParentCat=227 Also the Springloaded Flyball DVD talks a lot about tug drive. -

Who's going to the herding training this weekend at Pakenham with Paul McPhail? If anyone is interested email [email protected]

Kavik try the two toys game. Another thing I used to do with Josh was that if he didn't sit and hold the ball I would walk and leave the ball on the ground and not play his game.

Tollersowned I had the same problem with Josh, so what you need to do is to go right back to the start of the program, start at step 1 even if your knows how to retrieve. There is a step where the dog will only put the dumbell in your hand if your hand is out, you need to work up to that step and tell the dog to sit and not put your hand out until he has sat. I actually emailed Shirley Chong about where to incorporate the sit and thats what she told me. You can try emailing her. Jules P when you train the dog in the steps put the other dog away totally because it can ruin the concentration on the dog you are working with. Just follow the steps, if the dog is not getting it it could be because you have rushed the step or you need to spend more time on the steps. I wouldn't go then trying something else I would keep following the steps and let the dog work it out. Some steps might take a couple of sessions. Here is a video of Tia taken today doing the two toys game, this is the dog that had no interest in a tennis ball. Here is Tia at step 21 of the shirley chong retrieve.
-
Tia is similar so I let her do retrieving only when she is by herself. This method has worked for 4 dogs that I have worked with. Just work through the steps and don't rush them. Put a date on each step and tick it off as you go. It also teaches your dog to really understand how the clicker works. This method took about 4 weeks for Moses and Tia a bit longer for Josh. Once I did this method I also did the 2 toys game.

Motivation Techniques Needed For Flyball Training
whatevah replied to Yarrowfell's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports

Motivation Techniques Needed For Flyball Training

I find the two toys game really good for getting drive. Tia was not interested in the ball much so clicker trained her. Also in the morning before she gets fed I would throw the ball and as soon as she returned it she got her food. I also did only a couple of ball throws a day before she got sick of it. Springloaded has a great DVD out on training. -
I can;t find the photos, could you put up the link please.

Teaching Your Dog The Military Flip When Heeling ?
whatevah replied to cramet's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I got the idea from Kay Laurence, when I did CCD with Moses, I didn't want to do the other left about turn as I was getting tangled up in the lead, do this one instead. I use the phone book to teach him to think about what he is doing and use his back end to swing around. I then put this into the heeling. He generalised it well. Check out the Kay Laurence website.
