  1. Same sort of thing here - we use a pop top water bottle (just one bought from the shop with water in it and I refill when I need to).
  2. I totally agree with Cos.. Not a behaviour that I would allow to happen. Zig is nearly 4 years old and there is one dog that comes to our leash free park who insists on mounting him - Zig usually lays down when it starts but I walk over, remove the offending dog and take Zig elsewhere to play (in another part of the park). One owner tells me that they are only playing but like I said to her, 'Zig has hip dysplasia and that sort of 'play' is not welcomed, unless she wants to pay the $70 a month chiro fee'.. I have had the same conversation with her a few times now but it doesn't sink in. Sometimes you just have to do what you have to do, for your own dog.
  3. I agree with everyone else - report it. Not saying it would work with every dog but so far for me, when a dog is running toward me and my dog - I step in front of my dog and growl, very loudly, 'No' and or 'Get Away' - also throwing my arms up. This has stopped the few that we have encountered in their tracks - but it probably wouldn't stop a dog intent on attacking. I hope your little ones are OK and continue to recover from their surgery and this incident.
  4. I dont blame you. But i think some interactions would be good. Even just quick nose sniffings and moving on. I agree that interactions with bigger dogs, for small dogs, can be really good - however if I owned a small dog, I would like to be confident that the little one wouldn't be hurt (even in play or meeting).. If the OP is keen for the little one to meet bigger dogs, then I would be sure to choose dogs that I have met and know are gentle and have great temperaments. I personally limit the interaction that Zig has with other dogs. Even going to the leash free park, if more boisterous dogs show up and are too full on (out of control dogs), we leave, if it becomes really rough play.
  5. I have a 25kg staffy cross who used to tear around the leash free park with a tiny Pom (she ruled the park, tiny as she was and would only interact with a select few dogs). I really wish I had photos to show you, as she was so tiny and so bossy! Sadly they have moved now and we don't see them anymore.. Zig is pretty aware of little dogs but can also play full on body slamming games with the big boys as well. I guess it really depends on how the other dogs interact with your dog. If they are much bigger and playing rough, I would keep your dog clear of them.
  6. I am sorry he is suffering now and you are suffering seeing him like this. I need to say it: Do you think it is time to give him his wings (only you can make this decision) - believe me when I say, I know exactly how hard it is to do that! I am not telling you to do this because as I said, only you know what his quality of life is like. When their quality of life is gone, when they have no more joy at eating, seeing people, sniffing around, even having a small play (if they can), then I believe it is kinder to give them their wings. Give them peace, free from any pain. I questioned myself on this so many times and others told me that 'you will know, he will let you know'. Ollie did let me know when it was time - he just gave up and he wouldn't look at me. I wish you strength at this most difficult time. I have said it before and I continue to say, how unfair it is that they can't live as long as us.
  7. Hindsight is a wonderful thing :) I hope you find something soon for all of you.
  8. It is a shame you are not here - Zig would have happily had one or all of them for playmates until you had a new place.. Good luck, I hope you find someone to help.
  9. My last foster angel, Bella - when she first arrived (dislocated hip and busted cruciate) and not long before she found her forever home, hooning around the leash free park with my lad. Bella May to June 2014 by jamoore photos, on Flickr She was a total joy to care for.
  10. So devastating for all the owners and the kennel owners. Heartbreaking.
  11. Sadly PR seem to play on the emotional attachment people have for domesticated animals. 'Look at this poor dog on death row, he/she will die tomorrow if you don't donate/adopt right now!' You see the same story all the time.. Good rescues temperament test, microchip, desex, vaccinate and even do some basic training with foster dogs that they pull from pounds. PR is NOT a good rescue. I have read so many stories about this mob and my personal experience was less than impressive (and all I did was donate for a dog that they never even pulled but told me they did). My experience with them is also the reason I don't support another rescue that I supported a lot when I first joined DOL. So many people have been burned by PR in one way or another - but their sob stories and peoples big hearts keep them in business! PR also goes under quite a few different names. They had the kennel called Star something or other. They are a registered charity - which means that you can claim any donation over $2 for tax purposes - IF you get a tax invoice (sadly they are pretty poor at supplying these - my issue was that they wouldn't supply me with one for a $100 donation made, so I couldn't claim the donation on my tax).. I will sign off on PR now - they have no ethics and shouldn't be involved in rescuing any animals - just my opinion...
  12. Same in this house. Zig and any fosters are fed their main meal (usually VAN or BARF patties) of an evening and get some form of bone in the morning (usually half a chicken frame, turkey neck, lamb rib or similar). I guess I do it because it is the way my parents fed our animals as kids.
  13. If you have been giving Macrolone for more than a fortnight, you can't just stop it - you have to reduce the dose over the next week or so. Ollie had a few rounds on Macrolone when we had chemo and then a few times after - horrid drug but even with some of the side effects, I believe it helped in the long run. If you dog only has a month or two, then in all honesty I would just be making your time together as happy as possible. Feed him what he loves, go for slow walks in the park or a paddle in a pond (if he likes water). Lay around and hug him. There were days when all Ollie would eat was a milk arrowroot biscuit - so that is what he got. Sometimes he would eat BBQ chicken. When it was really hot, I made him chicken stock iceblocks (I still make these for current dogs) - just use the BBQ chicken carcass and boil it covered in water for a couple of hours - then double the water to water it down a bit. Wishing you loads of luck and strength when the times comes to make that horrid decision we all have to make for our terminally ill pets. I am really sorry you are going through this.
  14. Happy New Year Zig started the year out with a play date at the local leash free park.. (trying to keep up with a couple of jack russells :) ) 2015.1 Zig Happy New Year by jamoore photos, on Flickr
  15. Some people shouldn't have animals or kids! Good dog or not - the kid learns it can do it with one dog and will think it can do it with all dogs (some of which, may not be so obliging having a kids hands in their mouth while eating)..
  16. I wondered the same thing. Yep, sorry :) Edited to add, the only thing Zig brings me is his tennis ball, treat ball or kong!
  17. I agree that it is a serious issue. I noticed an ad on the FB page with a dogs NSW number, they stated both parent dogs were pedigree registered but the pups were not and would not be registered. I don't even know why they would use a dogs NSW number because as discussed, it could have easily seen them deregistered. At the time I didn't copy the ad on the page, so have no idea what the number is, if it was their number or the previous breeders number or they are just members and not registered breeders. I personally believe they are no better than any other BYB.
  18. But they are still in clear violation of the rules and should be reported. Dogs NSW takes these breaches of the rules very seriously. The only way to weed out the bad breeders is if they are reported. Please send a copy of the ad to Dogs NSW and they will follow it up. The ad is long gone now. I wonder how many people do this? These were the first I ever saw that mentioned their Dogs NSW member number - but still admitted that the pups were not registered (I had never seen that before, the reason for my initial post asking if it was an issue or not).
  19. Yes it is buyer beware, but it is up to all ANKC affiliated group members to uphold the rules they agreed to upon joining so that buyers can feel a bit safer. If we don't push for our "brand" not to be pirated, then the affiliates will not make the effort to keep the brand name clean. Getting back to the original unregistered litter advertisement, were those people actually registered breeders (with a prefix) or were they just people who owned two pedigree dogs that had a litter? Were they even Dogs NSW members at all or did they just quote the registration number of one of the dogs? If those breeders were actually members of Dogs NSW (whether breeder or non-breeder members regardless) then yes, they ought to have been reported. If not, then they probably should not have mentioned the parents pedigreed status in the advert, as that would be unfair trading on Dogs NSW good name, so to speak, even if they did not intend it that way. From what I could gather they just had two registered dogs - no prefix from what I could tell. To me they are still BYBers but at least they were honest about it (I guess).
  20. Just a note that the original post was not deceiving anyone (like in the current conversation). They stated their dogs NSW number, both parents were pedigree registered but they told everyone that the litter was not a registered litter. They didn't try to deceive anyone. Sorry if you were deceived Birgitbee - not all registered breeders are created equal. So it pays to research, research and then research some more.
  21. I know with out local pound it is about $26 to pull a dog under a 16D - because the rescue then desexes the animal and passes this cost onto the adoptive family. I wonder if PR are pulling the dogs for this price and then requesting the new owners desex the animals? So effectively they are allowing the public to use their 16D. Pretty scary - I wonder how many would actually then desex the animals they adopt for $50 (so PR would probably still be making a few bucks on each animal they pull). Might be an idea to let the local pounds that they work with know what they are advertising!
