  1. How rude of your neighbour (whether a vet said it or not - that was a horrible thing to say) It isn't true either - Ollie dog refused BBQ many times when he was sick. The only thing that I could get him to keep down when he was really sick was an Arnotts Milk Arrowroot biscuit. BBQ is often greasy and not nice in tummy's that are already unwell.
  2. My link This thread might help a bit - if you scroll down to the breed you need answers on, you will find that breeders and owners of the breeds have talked about their chosen breeds.
  3. Happy Gotcha day Didi. She sure has grown :)
  4. Great photos of lovely dogs..
  5. True OSO and I guess it would be something that you would know about each other before some sort of commitment to a relationship (if someone didn't like pets and didn't want them around).
  6. I can't believe someone that loved us and knew how much we loved pets, would ask us NOT to get another one.. Surely if they really care, they want to see us happy?? When we lost Dan and then Ollie dog in the space of 3 weeks, I knew we needed another pet to make the house (and life) livable.. There were some that told me to wait and don't rush into it but I knew I needed another pet (as much as he needed me at the time)..
  7. I use the off leash park to exercise my dogs and fosters that come into care (once I am sure they are safe and friendly - in saying that, I am yet to have one that isn't great around other dogs and people). I don't frequent it at the busy times - there is a couple of groups of people with dogs and we go early in the mornings. All the dogs get on great. Because it is early, we rarely get others bringing their dogs at that time. All dogs, including my own, here at home are taught good recalls (as well as basic manners). I want to know I can call my dogs back to me at any time - so far, so good.
  8. I agree that it is an uphill battle but there are those of us that really don't fit the stereotype of the 'typical' pitbull owner. My last foster girl was a little Pitbull and she is simply divine - she (and I) changed quite a few people's perspectives on the type of dog at the local leash free park. Bella now lives with 4 cats (and she is the bottom of the pack) and spends a few nights a week at a kids hostel because her owners is a carer there (and she sleeps overnight 3 nights a week). Bella has helped numerous new kids settle by just sleeping on their beds and being a pet that they can pat and cuddle up with - she is much loved there and at her home. The best thing we can do, is simply show people that they can be wonderful dogs and family pets. You will never win an argument with someone who only believes the media hype about them - the only thing we can do is show them. 9. And he is going home for Christmas as well.. Congrats to DOT Vic, what a simply amazing job they and everyone else has done!! FB link to the news! My link
  10. Thanks Jemmy, he is already snoring on the lounge beside me. Not sure if you know Zig's story but he was a pound pup, that we bought when he was about 6 months old. No training, very submissive but he used to bounce up to every dog he saw and jump all over them - he was always in the face of other more shy dogs and generally uncontrollable whenever he saw other dogs. He still gets pretty excited when he sees other dogs but with loads of training and redirecting his 'enthusiasm' into other behaviours, we have come a really long way. Three dogs were loose today - running all over the assessment grounds, he was off lead and he still stayed where he was told to stay. It really makes you so proud when you see how far they come with our love and guidance.
  11. I just had to come and share with all my reactive dog people friends.. From brat dog to gaining his first CCD points - an awesome 95/100 today. We have to do this another two times to gain our title (and under at least two different judges). He is nearly asleep in the photo because he is exhausted. Zig worked so well and had such an awesome day - I am so very proud of my lad. 2014.12.14 Zig 2nd in CCD by jamoore photos, on Flickr
  12. They do :) I guess I am being cautious , after the very rocky start they had with this little girl ..and how anxious she was ... It was meant as more of a reassuring comment than me disregarding the owners anxiousness :)
  13. Here is the link from DOT Vic for the decision on Mylo. My link
  14. She will be fine - it is a lot for a little one to go through but remember that hundreds of dogs do it every day and they are all OK. Maybe try to offer her some of her fave foods or treats (if she is hungry). She will come around.
  15. The laundry might be a bit cold for her - she has just had major surgery and needs to be kept warm.
  16. Denise Fenzi has some great ones, and she's just done a series of specific elements of heelwork (Turns, halts, etc) on her blog; http://denisefenzi.com/ Kamal Fernandez also has some great videos on youtube (he's brilliant to train with too) Zig and I are doing her Precision Heeling course right now - so much fun!
  17. We have a new ranger here in Queanbeyan that seems to be very pro BSL.. Lucky for us, the others here all have common sense :) I really hope this good news carries over for Kerser and he goes home as well.
  18. I have heard that a million times pers. My sisters SBTs have always eaten the maccas from under her tree and they have never been sick from them. They shell the nuts themselves, cracking them open and then eating the nuts. usua Do you know what the issue is with them, I googled but can only find 'don't fee them' - nothing as to what it does? I feed loads of stuff to Zig and did with Ollie as well. Watermelon, strawberries, tomatoes, apple, orange, mango (but I usually just share a bit of mine, they are so expensive these days). Zig helps himself to the tomatoes and strawberries from the garden. Although I did have to take him to the vets once as he ate all the tomatoes off the cherry tomato bush, even the green ones and he had a tummy ache because of it. Vet said that green tomatoes can be toxic to dogs. They just gave him something to make him sick, so he bought them up and he was fine after that. My chickens love watermelon on hot days as well.
  19. Yep, don't mess around if they think it is a grass seed. On the price issue - I look at it this way: I like my vet, he is great with my dog, usually solves any issues quickly. He isn't the cheapest vet in town but he is worth every cent I pay him and I trust him implicitly with my dog and any fosters that come in. So I pay what he charges and I don't question him.
  20. Sonny was also given the all clear to go home today as well. Facebook link My link I agree Mel - I hope this means that common sense is finally prevailing. Edited to add, do you have a link to what they said (would it be in the transcript?) How anyone can hate an animal (because of the way it looks) enough to want to kill it, take it from its family and kill it - is just beyond me.. What sort of person, wants to do something like that??
  21. And the council and LDH are being a$$holes.. My link A Melbourne pup who has spent more than two years on death row is going home after it was determined he was not a prohibited American pit bull terrier. Mylo's life may have been saved by a crucial decison by the former state government, which changed the standard test for restricted breeds. The new standard, which was gazetted in January 2014, applied a slightly different physical characteristic tests and had a different approach to applying them. In his judgment sparing Mylo's life, Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal president Justice Greg Garde said that when the declaration that Mylo was a pit bull was first made the old standard applied, but assessed under the new standard, he failed multiple physical characteristics requirements. Mylo's ordeal began in May 2012 when he was seized by a Brimbank City Council officer and taken to the Lost Dogs home under suspecision of being a restricted breed. He's not sniffed freedom since. But Mylo's Sunshine-based owner, Jessica Gray, has fought through the courts to keep the dog alive, even paying to have DNA tests done in the US that she said proved he was an American Staffordshire terrier cross, not a pit bull. Mylo belonged to Ms Gray's 13-year-old daughter Brodie. The dog had slept at the end of Brodie's bed every night until his incarceration. In February, Ms Gray said that her daughter could no longer visit Mylo because it was too heartbreaking seeing her dog locked up and his expectation that he would be leaving with her. The family also launched a Facebook page, 'Stop them from killing Mylo', which amassed nearly 10,000 supporters. An elated post appeared on the page after the decision which was published on Wednesday. "He's coming home!," the post stated, noting that he needed to be desexed first but that "hopefully he will go home Friday". The matter had bounced on appeal between the Supreme Court and the VCAT three times - with repeated orders made to have Mylo destroyed - until Wednesday's decision. Justice Garde found Mylo's skull and muzzle were not on "parallel plain" as required by the new standard's physical characteristics criteria. It could also not be established that Mylo had a skull that was large, flat, broad, slightly tapering towards the stop, among more that 10 out of a possible 18 physical criteria that Justice Garde said Mylo did not meet. "The dog is not a restricted breed dog as defined by Part 1 of the New Standard," Justice Garde concluded. Mylo supporters took to social media to express their joy at the decision. "Oh what a wonderful Christmas present!" one woman posted. Ms Gray said her daughter was "over the moon, very happy". "It's been a long, long road," Ms Gray said.. "We've been through two and half years of going in and out of court and losing and then winning and then going back to VCAT and this is just perfect. "Its the best Christmas present we could have asked for." But Ms Gray does not know when Mylo will be able to go home, because when she called the Lost Dogs Home to book him in to be desexed she was told the council had not yet notified them about VCAT's decision. "We were going to get him desexed tomorrow and register him on the Friday and bring him home," she said. "Now we've got to wait for the council yet again."
  22. And he is going home!!!! What awesome news for Mylo and his family today - Merry Christmas.. Must be Jade and Kerser's turn to be reunited next - here is hoping for the same outcome as Mylo.
  23. Good point - this is something I learned just this year. I now post packs out to clients according to their weight in post bags. The bags are much cheaper and if there isn't anything breakable - then it a cheaper solution. Postage is so expensive these days.
