  4. New one - we have someone who has been going without food in order to feed the two small 12 year old dogs after being hit with a personal situation via an abusive relationship end and loss of income virtually over night. This is a high stress situation and we are limited in what we can do due to legal issues. We need donations of dog food small dry puppy type food or soft food for a dog with few teeth in the Greenacre area of NSW if anyone can help out. Any help with small dog beds and blankets for the dogs would be handy too.

  6. Pacers is in high demand these days for our services but we need help with fundraising and donations to be able to do what is needed to provide the help needed to ensure these clients and their animals have a happy ending. The floods in two states and a huge increase in requests for help due to word getting around more of what we do and how we help have placed an rapid and unprecedented need for what we do. Even very small donations or help of any kind at this time would be greatly appreciated and with Mothers Day coming up perhaps you could take a look in the Pacers on line store where all proceeds go to helping people in these situations. www.mdbapacers.org.au Pacers has several cases which they need some special help with. A couple of examples are One is with a cat which we currently have in foster care which we are looking after for a very desperate lady. We are not able to go into too much detail here due to privacy issues but the cat has become ill and has been diagnosed with a heart problem - cardio myopathy. Now the meds have cut in the condition is being managed and the cat is not showing any signs of distress etc. This has complicated our management plan for this client on several levels. We need funds to cover our expenses. We have another client who has been diagnosed with cancer and who owns two dogs in the Townsville Area North Queensland. She needs help to walk her dogs. Preferably we need someone who is able to volunteer some time to do this for her or we need help with funds to pay for someone to provide this service to her to come in and walk the dogs for a few weeks while she is having treatment. The next is a client who is currently in hospital. This client is being treated for cancer in Melbourne and her cats are being cared for by a neighbour in the ACT. The neighbour is O.K. to look after the cats but needs a hand with some cat food. We need donations of cat food and someone who can deliver it to the neighbour for us in or near the ACT. We need anyone who knows of employment in the Sydney area to contact us to enable us to help a client who is seeking employment to be able to have her 2 dogs back with her. We need anyone anywhere who knows of the availability of any pet friendly accommodation to send us the details to enable us to help some clients who are currently needing this to be able to be reunited with their animals which we have in foster care. We need a cat foster carer in the Sydney area. Sponsorships, Donations of cash, goods, services - anything which we can use sell or auction is desperately now needed if we are to cope with the demand.
  7. We have had a couple of entries guys but its not an avalanche - Come on tell us what you like best about dogz
  8. PACERS Has them in their shop too. Here.
  9. No I dont need them but apparently they are good for areas where it gets down minus zero as dogs arent real smart about knowing they need to break ice to get to water. Seems they are good in areas where it snows and it doesnt snow here. Ive never considered it an issue as we check our dogs in the paddock twice a day and refill water bowls etc They usually take water where the sheep do. I needed to know in order to be sure an article Im writing is pertinent for Australia - not much point in discussing them and how they are used if no one uses them or no one can buy them here etc.

Doesn't matter how much professional guidance or professional approach you use - it won't stop an ordinary brindle mutt from being an ordinary brindle mutt which has a higher chance of being in foster care for longer than average. Should they then not be rescued? I always based my decisions on what to rescue from the pounds on a variety of factors but the major one was temperament. Dogs stayed in foster care for longer based on their temperaments too - I have pts a dog that was in long-term care but ONLY because he had temperament issues that were unresolvable. Sometimes great dogs spend a long time in care but I don't think that length of time in care should decide whether or not a dog lives or dies and I don't, honestly, think that a vet is any better able to make that decision than a rescuer. From what I've read I don't think that these laws are going to do anything to stop the cowboys. ETA I was never comfortable with euthanising a dog purely because it hadn't rehomed within a required period when it was healthy and of a good nature. If the dog was in foster care for more than 3 months and had major temperament issues that would be a different story but I have no issues with keeping a great dog in a great foster home for an extended period. Some of my absolute favourite dogs we rehomed were long-termers - one took over 12 months to find a home but it was the most fabulous home. Yep thats about how I see it too. Just seems to me that there will be more cowboys rather than less.

I've read it very thoroughly and I still disagree. Their definition of a juvenile (as far as I could find) was simply "puppy". At the very least, this needs to be elaborated on. Even assuming they mean fairly young puppies, I still don't think it's appropriate. Providing the dog has been vaccinated, I don't think there's much benefit to the dog in keeping it locked in someone's backyard for weeks, if not months. I'm not suggesting that foster carers should be encouraged to toss the puppy in a dog park but there's benefit to be had from positive experiences of the outside world. Puppies go through several important development stages before six months of age and to miss out on important socialisation periods when there are a variety of safe ways to make the most of them just doesn't make any sense to me. There are different categories. They have been elaborated on. Juvenile (babies too young to be desexed and rehomed), Behavioural (needs some training before rehoming) and Veterinary (needs treatment for illness or injury before rehoming) You need to reread the entire document, understand exactly what the three terms mean, and then read and understand the obligations and restrictions applying to each. Don't mix them up. If a pup is too young, small and lightweight to be desexed, there are problems associated with taking it out in public. The laws are designed so that dogs cannot just be out in foster homes doing nothing, getting older and less rehomable by the day. Thought will have to be put in to what the goals is for each dog in care, and how to achieve them within a short time. Dogs can't just be left in care for months on end without professional guidance and a professional approach on how to solve any problems. These laws will solve a lot of problems that rescue currently has. Hard to see how they will when they only apply to larger rescue groups.
  15. Yes agree but the battle cry is often, as it was in this thread that the real problem is BYB and Puppy farmers, not 'registered" which I guess means only ANKC breeders. I am simply pointing out that as far as I know there are no rules in the ANKC that stop BYB (what ever they are) from being members of ANKC and so forth. I really believe the only way to stop the dumping of pets is through education. Education will prevent people from buying a pet they will not keep. Education will prevent people from not desexing their pets if they know they cannot meet the needs of an intact pet. Education will prevent people from shoping in stores that sell cats and dogs, this will educate the stor owner if he wants to sell pet products he better stop selling pets. If one wants to stop set shop sales, then there are proven methods to make this happen. I believe, if ANKC, MDBA, WKC and other registries, ADAA, Flyball, Trial , the AVA and so forth (after they each write a policy nationwide that no member may sell to pet shops if they do not already have this) in partnership with RSPCA and other rescue orgnaizations called on all members and owners and the public at large to refuse to shop at all pet shops that sell cats and dogs. Send letters to all pet shops explaining what ia required to get on the list of approved pet supply shops. Get the news papers and TV to cover the calling by dog owners, breeders and concerned associations across Asutralia for the request that all person not shop at pet stores that sell cats and dogs. If every dog owner would take just a few min everytime the pass a pet shop that sells pets to speak to the owner manger or even the clerk to tell them you will never shop or recommend their shop to anyone you know with dogs because they sell cats and dogs. Then make an online list of Approved pets shops who have pledged to not sell cats or dogs. In short, notify by public action, that all pet shops need to stop selling pets. Always pollite but gets the point across. You want our buinsess stop selling cats and dogs. This has worked. Do I think preventing pet shops from selling cats and dogs will stop unwanted pets at shelters? Not a chance. But I still think that pet shop sales of cats and dogs is not the right way to get a pet for the owners but more importantly it is not in the best interest of the pets being sold. Shortstep Dogs NSW backed PIAA against moves to ban sales of live animals in pet shops and they actively advertise and promote the ability for their members to sell to PIAA recognised pet shops and agents. The ACCC will not allow the ANKC to prevent their members form selling to a pet shop - this has been tested in a major court case and it is seen as a restriction of trade which is against federal law. This is the main reason the MDBA set up under the business entity we did in the first place. In some states such as SA the clause remains that they are not to sell to retail outlets however it is a proven fact that this is against this federal law and cannot stick. Then how come MDBA can restrict their members trade and ANKC can not. Is only ANKC bond by the federal law you speak of. I do not understand how it would apply to one and not the other? It is my understanding that ANKC is a club, and they can can restrict the conduct of their members as they see fit, as the member represents ANKC. This is why they can say you can only do certain types of TV work. This is why they say you cannot use your stud for over dogs not registered in ANKC or for cross bred litter service, that is restricting your trade too? On this case, was there actually a court trail and verdict, if so you do have any records of the judgement? Dates and so forth. The MDBA is a different type of service and a different business entity our members are more like clients. From memory when it was all going through the legals around 18 years ago it has something to do with the ANKC monopoly on certain things in this country. Started off with a blue about a member who had purchased puppies for an overseas puppy farmer - I know this because I was one of the breeders who he scammed. No idea about court trials and verdicts which doesnt count anyway because at the end of the day they have to take direction from the ACCC. How do they get away with restricting which pet shop ? - the talk back when they were promoting the hell out of them and telling their members what a great thing it would be to sell their puppies to PIAA pet shops and PIAA agnets is about how PIAA have certain codes and regs which others dont have and they have agreements with the ANKC to keep certain records etc. Whether that would stick if someone wanted to yell about it - no idea. If you use a registered dog over a non registered dog and you are no longer a member you can still sell your non registered puppies anywhere you want to whom ever you want for the same price - because you couldnt have sold them to an FCI member in another country, you couldnt have sold them as registered purebred pedigreed puppies suitable for show or breeding etc Not being a member of the ANKC if you choose to do that doesnt restrict your ability to sell your puppies without restriction in comparison of anyone else who is breeding non registered puppies. There fore its not a restriction of trade. If I want to breed registered purebred puppies and sell some to pet shops and some to Germany to compete in FCI events by taking away my membership for selling to pet shops you prevent me from being able to sell the same product to the same market for the same price as someone who produces the same product and does everything exactly the same except sell puppies to a pet shop - restriction of trade.
  16. ANKC code of conduct 26. A member shall not: .1 Sell or dispose of a dog to a commercial pet wholesaler or retail pet shop unless they are accredited by the Pet Industry Association of Australia Limited (PIAA).

  18. From what I can see The press release does not qualify PIAA pet shops but is using the term pet shop generically and the figures they quote are for the entire industry not just their members. PIAA doesnt have that many members - especially those who are pet shops. About 300 Australia wide - last time I looked. I thought they might just be representing their members. They are taking a huge risk representing all pet shops who sell live animals. Yep pretty dumb.
  19. Poodle Fan - Puppy factories ARE the supplers you knobs. Show me the lifestyles of the dogs that produce your puppies, put your hands on your hearts and tell me that these dogs lead decent lives. We all know otherwise. Yep I agree however, the RSPCA have given a tick to commercial breeders as long as they dont keep their animals in substandard conditions. That is Standard conditions as described by mandatory codes for breeding dogs.

  21. But the RSPCA has defined a puppy farmer as someone who keeps their animals in substandard conditions. They say they dont buy from people who keep their animals in sub standard conditions and unless we do some undercover work and trace the dogs back fromthe source which we can prove is keeping them in substandard conditions its theory and not fact. Now if - for example these people who do illegal raids on puppy farms held off until they had evidence of them being sold to a pet shop and then produced the evidence that would be different but on the whole especially of recent times there's not much backing up that the pet shops are buying from any one who is keeping their dogs in substandard condition. Commercial farming for the pet shop industry is not being seen as the bad guy especially now they have their own registry and codes etc. We may not think that large scale breeding of mutts is ethical but thats not what is being promoted as a puppy farmer. Even then you still have to prove they are a primary contributor to unwanted dogs - pretty hard to do based on what is in place and the numbers they actually sell.
  22. I guess it's in their best interest to paint themselves as being a lesser contributor while putting all other sources into one group (despite the huge difference between a puppy farm and a breeder) and saying, "There you go, it's their fault, not ours." Edited to add.. What should be included (but never will be) is that virtually all of their dogs come from puppy farms or BYBs and so if a group is going to be lumped with another, it should be them with their suppliers. So.. Puppies bred/sold through registered breeders.. 66,000 (according to Austerra) Puppies bred/sold in puppy farms and BYBs (through pet shops and private sale) .. 384,000 Their number looks considerably less innocuous now. Firstly, I support restricting the sale of dogs and cats in pet shops. However, I fail to see how you can seperate out ANKC breeders from either BYB or puppy farmers (BTW those terms need defining if they are to really mean anything). As far as I know there is no rule in ANKC that bans 'BYB' from membership in ANKC, is there? Is there a rule that says no ANKC member may be a 'puppy farmer' ? I do not hink that saying 'ANKC breeders' automatically excludes them from being a BYB or puppy farmer. Perhaps more to the point, Do any of the state bodies of ANKC have a rule that their members can not sell their dogs/pups to pet shops or place their dogs via pet shops? How about MDBA, WKC, Labradoodle Breeders, any group of dog breeders, do any have a rule that prevents their members for selling to or though pet shops? Seems to me the best way to disassociate yourself from pet shops is to have a rule that members of your group/club/registry may not sell to or through pet shops. Perhaps our efforts are better spent telling our member organizations we do want our members selling to or through pet shops. Even if someone could - and they can if they take a minute to do some research - prove that some registered breeders are BYB or puppy farmers that still doesnt say that they are the main players in the unwanted dog problem. Statistically purebred registered breeders only breed about 9% of dogs sold throughout Australia - that in itself is evidence enough for me to suggest as a group they can hardly be held accountable for the other couple of hundred thousand that end up unwanted. even if every single one of the 30,000 odd they breed each year ended up as unwanted they still could not be held out to dry as a primary causal factor. The problem now, always has been and always will be is that there is not enough data to prove or disprove any defence or theory other than the numbers we actually breed and sell. Based on current figures both registered breeders and pet shops are in the clear because what they sell is only a drop in the ocean to numbers cited for unwanted dogs. Until such time as they are able to gather accurate statistics no one can say where the unwanted masses originate from.

I shall not provide any stud services to such persons (a dealer is defined as any person who regularly buys stock for sale at a profit).
  24. Master Dog Breeders and Associates Response to PIAA press release dated 7/4/11 Our members take responsibility for the placement of their puppies in homes which are best suited to their breed traits and characteristics. They provide support and guidance to their puppy buyers and act as a safety net into the future if the family can no longer keep the dog and help to find a new home for it. All MDBA breeder and rescue members are able to provide puppy and dog buyers free membership to the MDBA. This enables us to track their long term outcomes. As a result we categorically state without any reservation that MDBA breeder members do not contribute to the problem of unwanted dogs.
