I tried it for the "movement" month and knew as soon as this month started the light would be what would make the shot, just haven't tried it as yet, I will before the month's end though! (well if I say it here it will happen, if I don't it won't iykwim ) edit: thanks tlc

I've so wanted to do a shot like that, have tried and failed at least once ... great job terranik!!!
-
I keep meaning to say great shots tlc and riley james and bindi-boo and kingbob I really admire your dedication terranik ... those last few entries are brilliant! Glad to see your oh was so co-operative That book looks really nice and ancient! I have definitely run out of steam, but just wanted to share a couple more that I've taken this month before it's all over I thought this one was interesting with the sky lights ... it's looking up from under my clothes line elephant ornaments: and a colour version:

beautiful pointee I love how you love your Dash here's my darling boy on my bed ... almost last week now, I've so been neglecting dol recently
-
it's my brother's birthday today so I got the camera out last night to make him a quick light-writing Happy Birthday e-card kind of thing ... then couldn't put the camera away ... I'm using a small key-chain light that I accidently found out fit inside this blue bottle this shot the light is filtered through the blue bottle above
-
oo I missed your shot kirislin - I love those type of windy tree shots! I did have a couple of birds that were better than the last lot that I was gonna post up, but they've got lost somewhere
-
this thread is going a little too quick for me ... just want to say I'm loving and inspired by all the great creativity displayed

brilliant work everyone the guitar, sax, backlit lego castles, flowers, the bottle are all really cool! I think my subjects are lacking something - I did Chester again last night 'cause I can't help myself, and some of my car (that I'm not that overly impressed by) and I did some more tonight of different subjects ... I think I may end up with a backlog this month, I can't seem to keep up downloading with my excitement of taking them - like last night I had the camera plugged in downloading the shots and I was hankering for it to hurry up so I could take more pics I don't need another addiction right now
-
love yours rocco, and pblab At first I was thinking that I wasn't going to do this - too hard, but after 1/2 hour I can see how it could become addictive Chess last night ... and yes most came out with a bit of blur, this isn't bad for 8 secs. I even got some drool out of him as I rewarded a couple of tries for being still - I think he's learning the sound the camera makes when it's on timer ...
-
and because I've been taking them: frozen frozen frozen and something "frozen" other than dogs - although I swear there is a shar pei in there!! panning a bird? - only 'cause you can see the tree's all blurry - ha! the bird is too ... I told you my bird shots suck and lastly, I went for a slow exposure of the trees moving in the wind - 2.5secs
-
what an abysmal attempt I've achieved this month! I have excuses but they are just excuses I have loved everyone's work - too good here's some movement I have got (so far, there's still a week to go you never know what can happen ) eta: kja, you haven't killed the thread!! I was very impressed with your shot (I caught it on your blog) and loved the sideways bird, I've had very poor luck with catching bird shots

Seriously impressed with everyone's efforts I'm not doing very well photographically this month so far But I can't help but to post up what I have got, even though I'm not happy with any of them really! Here's the best of some pathetic attempts I've made towards this challenge so far ... everything else I've tried hasn't worked I even went for a long walk along the railway line for a panning shot this afternoon and encountered not a single train! I mostly had subject problems, timing or light/cold/rain problems ... at least that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it :D frozen motion - I like this because as Chester is going after the swinging bungy rope toy (as an aside I was actually trying to pan the bungy rope toy, but Chester didn't really let me ), Lotus is bowing at another rope toy and Texas is licking his lips over a squeaky toy - I like how it has a feel of "just another ordinary day in the backyard with my dogs" This is sort of a panning shot, at least that's what I was going for, of Jamie, have added it only because I like the ghostliness of it This one was supposed to be a panning shot of Chester at the park, but he stopped mid-stride to sniff something This one's probably my favourite - though it's far from perfect, I think Lotus' back is the point of focus This one was a long exposure ceiling fan that took multiple attempts before it actually looked like what it was, rather than just a swirl This was supposed to show the movement of these weeds by the wind using a slow exposure - my settings couldn't get slower than 1 sec without over exposing so I guess it doesn't really count ... I like the abstract nature of it anyway ... taken while I was waiting for a train to go by ... it was bloody cold and on/off raining - the things we do for photography, and I'm so not happy I didn't get what I was aiming for and finally proof that there was no train hahaha ... I walked as far as you can see along the tracks with Chester and not a train went by

I'm pretty sure it's the resizing to fit onto the forum - why I use "Medium" from flickr to post here, 'cause if you actually click on the link on your last 2 to show full size, they look fine

I'm really enjoying everyone efforts so far terranik - great idea with the flipping pages of the book, and I love the ball playing too aquaticmal - amazing horse shots!! It's not something I've seen much of ... horsey's horsing around I have some ideas and will be back to contribute when I get some time to take them etc.

I tried this again this morning, I like this better than my last try, I think the light made a big difference though, the angle is a little different, more straight on ...
-
fantastic though I'm insanely jealous! I got a new lens last month, but it was a crappy stupid impulse buy that has wasted all my camera money and has produced dodgy results despite my efforts ... but I may just start a sigma 10-20mm wide-angle lens thread just to brag away by myself ... might inspire me to keep trying

Please please stop! lalalalalalalalala blocks ears, not listening, cant afford to upgrade. ditto what kirislin said lalalalalalalalalala
-
oh cool shot!!! ... what a mug!!! argh I don't want to hear that the new camera makes your shots better, I'm thinking upgrading is becoming necessary
-
good work tlc I love lightroom okay, I made a last ditch effort and came up with nothing new just more Chester climbing trees or infront of trees or dwarfed by trees
-
iltby - great quality on the rosella! kja - I love that dead tree on the beach terranik - feet up gave me a giggle ****** "I told you it would be closed, Chester!" I was hoping for a sad, disappointed look, but he looks more curious here than anything. He was a good boy lying down on the cold concrete though
-
good work everyone my "out and about" has come to a grinding halt, but I made a special effort tonight, just need to get it off the camera and see if it's worth anything. terranik - I'm loving the variety! LP - I agree the pup with the voice is a very cute pic, and congrats on the 50mm, I'm a fan too! tlc - love the one of the happy boys! iltby - I love the 2nd duck shot! I was amazed to witness an Owl (I never see owls) get harrassed out of this big bush it was probably sleeping in by a bunch of black crows (?) this morning
-
terranik - love the injection shot, is that black background and reflection as shot or did you do something post production to get that? I'd be worried if that needle came anywhere near me tlc - I agree Cooper definitely has that old soul look! And that last colour version of Old Man and the Sea is great (can't remember if the first one you posted here was colour or not?) ... I really love the texture you got in the sand at his feet!!

well that's interesting, I always err on the side of underexposing rather than overexposing, (though I'm trying to change that) and can say I've noticed some grain in my shots. Glad to hear if printed it wouldn't be noticable. I used to have not such a problem with grainy/noisy shots, but after looking over some earlier ones, I have tried to avoid it where possible, and figured it was the over ISO400 that caused my issue, maybe it was more the underexposing? anyway, here's the best shot I got of Chester trying to catch a small dog biscuit (decided to save the cheese ). I went through a handful of biscuits, I found out Chester is a terrible catch, I'm a terrible thrower and his teeth really need a clean I ditched the tripod 'cause I couldn't get the angle right, it's too low and the focus was way off, I couldn't get it high enough, I ended up standing on one of my useful boxes to get the height, after trying to shoot blind with an outstretched arm held high and above his head, still I think I was too close. I shot this one at about my waist height (standing on the box) steadying it against my body, and I took a couple of pre-shots to see if I had the angle right considering I wasn't looking through the viewfinder when shooting before throwing the biscuit. I actually found the timing was the hardest, 'cause even with the continuous shooting you have delays between each shot, so I started at different times, I got heaps of shots in a row of just before I threw the biscuit and just after he missed the catch, but seemed to miss the middle shots, just because of the timing of the continuous shooting, if that makes sense? Because of what you said rubiton, I didn't go below f/5.6 but most of mine came out underexposed. This was close to the end of over 300 shots, I think I was on the 2nd to last biscuit, I was sure I hadn't succeeded, the shutter speed was too slow at 1/320 - but like I said didn't want to go higher ISO than 400 and didn't want to go wider than f/5.6 - I shoot raw these days, not sure if that helped 'cause I upped the exposure in lightroom, I also added some extra brightness to the biscuit, 'cause it was too dark against his tongue? oh, and I cropped it square Overall, I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, but there is definite room for improvement, namely shutter speed, timing and lighting :D rocco - I literally giggled with that shot! his eyes! I got a few outtakes with Chester's eyes practically crossed lol
-
can I try and see what I come up with? atm it is cloudy, I have no speedlight, I have a tripod but no shutter release - it's on order! I have a 50mm, the 1.8 version and refuse to go higher than 400ISO unless absolutely necessary be back with the result tonight I'm on leave with nothing better to do
-
thanks for the comments guys tlc - love the perspective of that last one darien - yup normal day is a little familiar terranik - I'm enjoying your insights into the medical studies I'm happy for a May rest, I May get to catch up on other things just one pic of Chester on the beach yesterday for my Out and About challenge, I chose this one 'cause he is so sandy oh okay, 2 pics of Chester full of sand! I took so many pics yesterday I have no idea anymore about which ones I like
