  1. In my experience, you could rename ANY dog "OI" and it would respond I have always been a great one for giving my dogs multiple nick-names, and they always respond to them. I re-named Harrison when I got him, and he had no problems with it.
  2. I have composed a letter to the Sunday Age regarding this article. Whilst I'm happy with her statement about not buying a puppy on impulse, I was quite upset by the way she and her aquaintances regarded their puppies as "disposible" when they turned out to be too big a commitment. I also have an issue with her statement that adopted dogs are "grateful" how many dogs do you think actually feel "gratitude" - total bulls*t! I have said in my letter that impulse buying is one of the reasons ethical breeders would like to see pet shops banned from selling live animals. Anyway, check out the "Sunday LIfe" next week & see if they publish my letter!
  3. George Schofield in Mickleham
  4. In my experience, ALL 6 day old puppies look like guinea pigs
  5. My reply to your PM? In which you said that you liked a good discussion? Oh for pity's sake - I commented that you were way off base with the advice you were giving and that its all good to be involved in discussions but to be informed. There was no nastiness, bullying or hurtfulness in it. Feel free to report it to the Moderators. I must admit I'm getting a little fed-up with these know-it-all newbies! BT - if you can't stand the heat - stay out of the kitchen!
  6. TM - I'm thinking this, as well, when our boy Lennon, had a abcess in his prostate which burst, spreading infection throughout his body, he was in the University Vet Clinic intensive care for a week with constant monitering and fluids. The cost was just under $4,000.00!
  7. The demand was created in part by a person with a beef with the purebred dog fancy, is based on misinformation and is fuelled by ignorance. No amount of responsible breeding can make an F1 crossbred reliable in terms of appearance, temperment and non-shedding. Guide dogs got out of the game for a reason. The people that continue to churn out F1 crosses don't look beyond their bank balances. There is little money to be made in responsibly and ethically breeding dogs. The people that want one "no matter what" won't be interested in waiting for pups or being vetted by breeders. They'll go where they've always gone until those sources are shut down. That is interesting about the Guide dogs and you people sure do know a lot. I think the demand is because they are 1. Considered cute 2. Non-shedding 3. The latest fad Just my opinion There is no guarantee that they will be non-shedding : Absolutely true, and it is people who know nothing about these crossbreeds making such idiotic statements that keeps these puppy farmers in business!
  8. I agree almost totally with Ellz, but I would not pay ANYTHING - there is nothing to show that your dog was responsible and, if you give them money, even $100, they may take it as an admission that your dog is at fault. I feel sorry for the people with the $4000 vet bill, but they should supervise their dog more carefully.
  9. All I can say is, if you DO come down here - Poodlemum & Poodle Mum have to get together
  10. That would be a complete lack of socialisation with other breeds as babies. They are a breed that needs to be introduced to dogs other than spitz at a very young age or they can become very fearful of other shaped dogs. They are always more comfortable with other spitz breeds but can get on well with other breeds if they meet them young enough. Japanese Spitz are the only breed I know of where breeders routinely run several stud males together with no aggression problems at all. They even seem to be able to put a strange male in with their other boys without problems. The girls are sometimes a different matter and some just don't get on but the boys are fine. They are very territorial and will bark at other dogs when in crates or trolleys at shows, but it is all false bravado. Once they are out of the crate they are not so brave and are happy to say hello to other dogs with no issues. I always pinch my friends new babies at shows and take them over to sit amongst the Border Collies and the other working breeds at their first few shows. It really helps them accept that those other strange creatures are all dogs, even if they are not spitz looking. I thought that might possibly have been the case - the owners were d*ckheads, as well! It's a pity - as it has led me to be wary of any JS I encounter, when I'm sure that many of them are calm, non-aggresive dogs.
  11. OK - just checked the Poodle Club website, which says the 6th March show IS at KCC park. We should have DOL nametags for such occasions
  12. I would double-check this information! According to the Dogs Victoria website, this show is at KCC Park. (I certainly HOPE it is, as KCC Park is a lot closer to me now than Bulla). Zug Zug, if it hapens to be Standards you're interested in, I know there will be a few at this show.
  13. The only one I've met was NUTS Gorgeous though :D You must have met a very young one, then - they are usually very intelligent & laid-back (mine are, anyway )
  14. I don't know that it's actually ILLEGAL. Unethical, certainly, but no-one would accuse these puppy farmers of being ethical! Certainly registered breeders in Victoria are prevented by the VCA Code Of Ethics from selling puppies under 8 weeks.
  15. All I know about the breed is that we had 2 in our Obedience Club, both owned by the same couple, and they were EXTREMELY dog aggressive. I don't know if they were from the same litter, all I know is that the owners didn't do much about the aggression (amazing how some people seem to think a smallish dog being DA is all right). I'm afraid that really put me off the breed. I know it's stupid to make a generalization from 2 dogs, but that's how I feel - whenever I see a Japaese Spitz, I give it a wide berth!
  16. to Poodlefan for getting the thread back on track - I really get pi$$ed off with these threads turning into a hissy fight between a couple of people - it doesn't address the issue or help anyone.
  17. Yes - WE WANT PICTURES!!!
  18. What a load of garbage, from the usual attention-grabbing idiots, as if they REALLY care about animal welfare
  19. Just wanted to say - Good on you Terry for caring & trying to point someone in the right direction
  20. This is exactly wht I put in writing for my puppy buyers. Unfortunately, as you said, they dont always contact me. There are 2 cases I can think of where puppies bought from me have been sold or given away without my knowledge - very disappointing when I try to be ethical and also try to make sure that all my puppies are in good, loving, suitable homes.
  21. I get them regularly - OH is a trained Shiatsu therapist!
  22. Standard Poodle!! (It'll be fluffy if you keep it in puppy coat )
  23. When I saw the thread title I immediately thought - "OMG, not a another stupid designer dog"
