I got Cody (and then Delta) off sheep properties as registered breeders wouldn't give me the time of day as I was told I had no experience with dogs so could not have a border collie as my first breed. Having never had dogs before I obviously could not prove how devoted I was to learning about them and at the time I thought agility was something that they only did in America  I was determined that a border collie was the breed for me so had to source them elsewhere. Through Cody I discovered that agility does in fact exist in Australia yet never got the chance to compete with him due to a few knee surgeries so still could not prove my worth as an owner when the time came to add Delta to my family. Once again, I was forced to go outside the registered dog network for my dog. Well as it turns out I was right all along, the breed definitely is for me, and I have never once regretted owning any of them. I think breeders do themselves and the breed a disservice sometimes and make it seem as though the only people who can buy a "papered dog" is someone who wants to show or compete in some way shape or form with them. The regular pet owners are quite often turned away by what seems to be an almost elite society. So much easier to source a dog from a newspaper, no questions are asked then and you take a chance on the health of the pup. Unfortunately for the OP the gamble just might not have paid off I really do hope it turns out to be something minor, sometimes young pups can get so sick it seems like a really serious ailment, then they bounce right back as though nothing was ever wrong. I'm hoping this is the case here. This BTW is in no way a dig at ANKC breeders :) We are breeders ourselves and under no circumstances will our dogs ever be sold to pet homes as they are just not suited to them. Not even an active home. But ours are bred for a very different purpose to most ANKC dogs and we are the exception rather than the rule when it comes to this.

I would be getting the dog to a chiropractor or canine physio. I don't know of the good ones in Victoria but I'm sure there are plenty of DOLers who would be happy to recommend someone. Perhaps a search of chiros/physios in Victoria would yield some results for you? Dogs don't just limp for no reason. I don't agree with the statement that many foxie types carry their legs "for no apparent reason". Luxating patellas are a huge issue in smaller terrier breeds and account for the skipping that you can see in many of these dogs. Often things like that go undetected by a regular vet and that is why a good chiro is worth their weight in gold. We are lucky enough to have a great one in Canberra who also happens to be a vet, so she is the only person our dogs see.

Tailwag would have an email address for her, maybe contact her on Facebook as she quite often browses on here without logging in so wouldnt get a pm. Will try and remember to ask when she gets home :) the other person would be Karen Edwards but can't remember her username...

With 7 trialling dogs we don't get a great deal of time for photos, but all of them are 500 height so we will have a whole day to ourselves. Big day Wednesday but then a day of rest for the kids (and us) which is good.

Sam, we will be there on the Thursday but only run will Link in 400SPDM so will be purely a photo day. Can try and get some of her for you :)

We are trying to get some dog run panels transported from a DOLer near Cessnock down to Canberra. We have somebody from Sydney doing the Hillsborough show this weekend who can get them to Sydney for us (where they can be indefinitely stored at my Aunts) but we just need help getting them to the Hillsborough showground. They are quite big, 3 of them are 2.3m x 1.8m and the others are 1.7m x 1.8m. There are 7 all up (I think). Anyone able to help? I would love you forever if you could :) Of course we can cover additional fuel costs associated with the extra weight.

Anyone From Cessnock Area Doing Hillsborough?

Answered it the best I could, although I had the same issues as many others did. We have 9 dogs who are all kept at a "leaner than average" weight due to them being agility/flyball dogs. To the average person they would be too thin. We also feed raw (I went with home-cooked) and the only times they ever receive treats is if we are training something precise and tugging/fetch isn't ideal. Nobody is ever fed simply because they begged for food (in fact that is usually the quickest way to find yourself crated down the other end of the house LOL) and we certainly don't leave food out for them to free feed. They are fed when we want to feed them, not when they think its dinner time. As for feeding the recommended amounts? If we can feel slight coverage over their ribs they get fed less, if their hip bones could take out an eye they get fed more. I got really stuck on the "what type of dog are they" as none of them were applicable. They are very rarely walked but we live on a property so they have room to run, and we do agility training with them a few afternoons a week. I think I ticked the 30min walk option as I figured thats about the exercise equivelent of a 5min jumping session. Of course they run faster than us, but was the question implying that we can't control our dogs if we say that?

What Is The Age Difference Between Your Dogs?
DeltaCharlie replied to Pretty Miss Emma's topic in General Dog Discussion
This year ours are: 13 (Aug) 11 (Dec) 10 (Aug) 8 (Feb) 7 (May) 6 (Dec) 5 (Oct) 2 (Jul) 2 (Dec) Smallest gap is 5months, biggest is almost 3 years. The older ones are kind of a blended family, I already had Delta (6 in Dec) and Charlie (just turned 7) when I moved in with Tailwag who had 5 of her own. Then we got Whip (2 in Jul) and bred a litter a few months later (Rush- 2 in Dec). Next 2 will likely be littermates from a litter planned for next year. -
Plenty of 600 height border collies in NSW/ACT that are purebred (either main registered or sporting registered). One of the pup's from our litter (17.5 months old now) is a 600 height border collie. You don't see it as much in the show lines but certainly some big dogs in the working lines (sheep aren't as picky about things like that LOL). There are quite a few main registered border collies in the 600 height for the upcoming nationals.
-
Pretty sure the rules state that they must be measured within 1 month of their first trial. I was only checking it recently as we got all of our pups measured a few weeks ago as there were a few judges at a trial who were free. 600 height is 545mm and above. How tall is Cricket? I thought he was already taller than that :) I have never heard of people having their Qs taken off them if their dog remeasures higher. Delta remeasured as a Maxi in ADAA after already having many cards as a Midi dog and there was no problem there. She had, however, been officially measured as a Midi dog at 20 months so it wasn't as though I had just entered her where I thought. Would be a different story if the dog hadn't been measured. Perhaps CFS will come in here and clarify :)

Head Collar Vs Body Harness
DeltaCharlie replied to MrStompy's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
It also depends on the dog and what they are more comfortable in. Some really despise the head collars and are much happier on a harness, others couldn't care less either way. Whip will still pull really hard on a halti so sometimes he wears both LOL Out of our 9, we have 5 that use a gentle leader head collar and 4 that use a no pull harness. For time saving/convenience, we regularly walk 8 dogs at the same time (between 2 people) and it is impossible to correct one dog for pulling without affecting at least 3 others. Are we going to bother putting the time into walking each dog individually and then expect it to come together when they walk as a pack- no. They don't get walked often enough to warrant it anyway and they are all perfectly happy to walk with their various training aids so we don't consider it worth worrying about. Find what works best for your dog, what you are both happy and comfortable with and go with that. Everything has its pros and cons, you just have to go with what is best in your situation. Nobody here knows that better than you. -
As Le said it all comes down to the judges discretion. Many judges would have DQed you guys because Adam pulled Jazza off the DW when he was at the top of the upramp about to go across (unsafe performance). Its best to clarify with each judge during the briefing just what they will and won't allow if you are unsure. I am always bugging judges beforehand in regards to pairs as there is a bit of grey area in the rules and I like to be sure before I run. Most common question for me is when they consider a dog to have completed a contact (some will allow the next dog to run once the first dog is in the yellow area, others like them to be completely on the ground before the swap can happen).
-
I watched the video last night and from memory you actually needed to change at the jump before, not the DW. Can't remember which dog it was but somebody (Im thinking Bindi) knocked the bar then Jazza did the dog walk but actually needed to go and fix the bar. Instead, on his way back he ran through the uprights the wrong way (which means a change again) but Bindi was already on the dog walk. So you needed to go back and fix the bar that was knocked. All that swapping that the judge was insisting on was for the obstacle before, not the actual contact :D Technically you should have been disqualified for having both dogs on the contact at the same time though. I have seen judges DQ pairs for being in the tunnel at the same time and Chopper and Charlie were lucky in one run to not be DQed for taking the last jump together.

I can't answer your question sorry, but I did pick up on this line. Not sure if I misunderstood but just wanted to make sure that you knew that you are still able to do obedience and agility with a limited register dog. The only things you can't do with a limited reg dog (correct me if I am wrong) is conformation showing and breed from them. Everything else is still available to you :)

What To Do When Your Dog Is Scared At The Park?
DeltaCharlie replied to Bear&Duke's topic in General Dog Discussion
My usual response is to hold my dog behind me, stomp my feet loudly while advancing at approaching dog (being as intimidating as I can) while screaming at the clueless owners to get the f***ing dog! I once chased a beagle down a beach waving a big stick (dragging my poor bewildered dogs behind me) when we were in WA LOL Was a friendly dog but my anger at the stupid owners turned me into a monster (we had repeatedly asked them to call their dog at which they responded by laughing and drinking more beer). Not to mention Tailwag and I had a pack of 7 onlead dogs with us at the time, no matter how friendly a dog is things could have turned nasty had it tried to enter a pack that size (especially with them onlead). -
If You Were Only Able To Take One Lens
DeltaCharlie replied to Rozzie's topic in Photos, Photos, Photos
For me it would be a toss up between the (f1.8) 50mm or my (f2.8) 70-200mm. If space was an issue the 50mm as the zoom is pretty big, but would offer more flexibility. -
Hi Le, The way I would have handled it ideally would be to stay on the side of 3 and 4, give a turn (similar to what we were training the pups to do in those videos I posted) then picked them up again to put back through the tunnel. Is that how you intended? Without seeing it on the ground and the distances, it would have seen varying results from my dogs. Delta would have picked up the turn but not necessarily sent out to the jump (depending on her momentum), Charlie has better natural distance but not as good an understanding of the turn command and I haven't trained him enough for a turn combined with moving further out, however, he is the sort of dog that I could have bumbled through it with as he is slower. Whip would probably have picked it up the best of my 3 as he has great distance, and a better understanding of verbals than my other 2. Not to mention we have been training these exact drills with him :) What a great looking course, wish we were there to run it :) Are weave poles no longer required in JDO?
-
Our dogs are taught an 'out' command which pretty much means "I'm going to stay on my line over here but you need to move away from me and go over there". We have mucked around a little with the pups teaching them a "far" command too... which means go out past the closest obstacle and take the one that is further out. Some dogs just naturally have a better distance than others though, even within our pack (talking about the 7 border collies) there are varying degrees of distance that they are comfortable with. Some will just send out over a line not caring what is in between and will layer without a seconds hesitation, others will prefer to cut back in and try to take the closer obstacles. Here are the videos we made of the last lot of training we did with both pups. Neither of them are trialling yet. The last exercise each pup does (on the grass area) is working on their distance and understanding of "out" and "turn" (turn away from us) to get them out and over the far jumps. Using that same set up, "out" would mean we wanted them to take the closer jump but would be staying around the serp, "far" would mean take the jump that was out further. Both of them were picking it up nicely but we haven't revisted it for a while.

Download Rally O Signs Here
DeltaCharlie replied to sas's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Any chance they could be put back up again? -
We will be at the one in Canberra, but as part of a flyball comp. It is a normal competition for us, it just happens to run alongside the walk to promote the sport and give the public something to look at. I have done it a few times but only ever at small country walks (once at Katoomba and once at Kempsey). Too many incompetent idiots for my liking :)
-
I'd think you would be more likely to find a corgi out there than an aussie LOL Aussies aren't exactly the dog of choice for Australian conditions. You would be looking at border collies, kelpies, ACDs and koolies as your main working dogs.

Does Anyone Rescue From Kempsey?
DeltaCharlie replied to Sheridan's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
I know that Marguerite from the Kempsey branch of RSPCA takes dogs from the pound to rehome. They are quarantined on her property then advertised on the RSPCA site. That is how I got Charlie, she pulled him from the pound on his last day and I adopted him from her. There isn't a shelter there, just her acting in a volunteer capacity. Not sure who else actively rescues in the area though. -
I think you probably need something with a mask and neither kelpies nor cattles have that. Given that there is brindle as well... I'd be inclined to go with kelpie x staffy as the main 2 breeds. Fits with the physique and physical colouring for all pups. I've known a few kelpie/staffy mixes that look very similar to these guys. Obviously there are probably countless other breeds in there but they would fit as the dominant breeds just going by appearance.
