INTRODUCING JINGO I wanted to let you all know first, as the members who frequent this thread have really been a huge help to me over the last 7 months since Tippy lost his fight with a brown snake. It has been tough, but watching the happy puppy stories here has given me hope that our "perfect puppy" will choose us. Well he has, and he is "perfect" (for a puppy). We had planned a registered puppy, but that was not to be this time. A chance meeting, a brief look, and well.....We are taking a chance. He was raised and socialised with big farm dogs- Big tick because we have a border Collie. Heaps of socialisation with chooks, cows, sheep, rabbits, roo's, motorbikes, etc- tick Mum very well mannered, friendly, not contained (a Jack Russell not fenced in -I was impressed) The vet who cares for them them bought Jingo's brother. loves his crate, and was already being toilet trained (closed into crate at night, realeased to toilet outside in morning). BUT nothing in life is easy, or perfect..... Kira hated him, so much so we turned our house into fort Knox to keep Puppy safe, and I thought for sure we would need to return him or rehome him ourselves. It was a dreadful two weeks, but we used every training option we knew, and were ready to bring in our trusted dog trainer, but things kept getting better, until Kira remembered how to play with a puppy, and now they play every opportunity they get, and our problem now is Kira does not like it at all when he is in his puppy pen..... I know there will still be grumbles, and arguments, but that is why we have his "Fort Knox" set up- a pen and crate instead of a dining room table, his own doggy door to his own deck and grassed area. (It is nice owning a house that you can renovate when needed) So far, so good, wish us luck as we keep moving forward. Di -
Not sure I can offer any help, but I had to comment on his photo- how could anyone not try to help when they see those eyes. He is gorgeous. Good luck finding a workable solution. Di

Not yet Lisa, but we have spoken to TobyJack" in Armidale, and they are planning a litter soon, and will let us know details. "Jacklands" had some available, but they were broken coated. I would be happy to hear recommenations, it seems there is not many breeding smooth coats or Parsons, as is always the way, when you want something in particular, less available..... Oh well. There was a gorgeous 12 week old JR in Armidale pound, but I really at this point want a smooth coat boy. It is fun searching though, and who knows where he will come from. Di -
Great news on your new addition Gillybob,I have been thinking of you often since we both lost our dogs within days of each other, it really has been a hard six months for us both, but spring is here and you now have your Basset to help ease the pain a little, and make life interesting again. I can't wait to hear more about him. We are back from holidays so puppies are back on our agenda again. We have decided to concentrate our search on a smooth coat Jack Russell or a Parson Russell. I know it would be best to go a different breed, but these guys just seem to melt our hearts, and though we have seriously looked at many other breeds, we keep coming back to these guys- but who knows? I just hope we do when the "one" comes along. Ranger00- I totally know your fears at this time, but I trust I have done the "grief" work I had to do, and am now in the right headspace to welcome a new addition to our family in a positive way- and I can't wait now. Our other dog is a Border Collie, and she is the most wonderful dog, but not a cuddler, I miss by "boydog" cuddles. Di

Lisa, you really need to not let Nova watch the Magician "Dynamo" on TV any more We are back from our holidays and are now starting to look closely at puppies, probably a short coat Jack Russell, or a Parson Ruseell (seems to be less of them, but our ultimate preference. We are very excited, and very scared, as you would all remember! There doesn't seem to be many short coats around at the moment, most breeders seem to have no puppies at the moment, or rough coated ones, but we have patience and faith that the right one will turn up. :) Your puppies are all doing so well, and you all seem to be doing great jobs, thanks for sharing a little with us all. Di -
These photo's are great Lisa, and I can see why you will be going back again. The dark backgraound suits Nova's colouring very well. Thanks for sharing. Di

Nova's photo is beautiful, I can't wait to see more. Does this guy have a website or facebook presence to have a look at more of his work? Di -
Treble gets more handsome every day. It is great to see his many expressions. Di

Hi JRT Lover Good luck in your quest. Like Rozzie I have not met a snappy JRT. I know I would have trusted ours with any child or baby (not that I would have given him an opportunity- like with any dog). The only beagle I have known was difficult to train, due to his obsessiveness to sniff and follow anything that was around to be trailled- so funny when he was a puppy and followed other food trained puppies into the ring, and ignored his owner in favour of the dropped treats littering the ground! The trainers passed him anyway as they realised he should have done his "exam" first. Di

PLEASE FEEL FREE TO ADD YOUR OWN ADVICE HERE What I am going to say now will probably worry people, and I truely don't mean to scare anyone, but as much forewarning as possible may just help to save you from the grief I am still feeling. We lost Tip, our Jack Russell to snakebite in March. Some random advice to all dog owners is: Read as much as you can about snake habits and habitats and act accordingly to discourage them. They do like spots to shelter, water and a food source (mice/frogs etc, so think about that. Clean everything you can from your yard. I don't have any water in the yard at all, we have only two pine trees in the dog yard, canopies starting at 5 feet high, the yard is fenced with close fitting palings sitting on a bed of cement. The lawn is kept very short. We live out of town on 5 acres, and slash around the dogs paling fence as well. We are in Armidale NSW and we have a high snake population around us. I have heard if a pencil can fit through a gap, so can a snake. We actually have a small area fenced off around the dog door that we can close off, so we can easily check that for snakes before letting them out to toilet if I feel there is any threat (Tip would start to sniff the fenceline and scratch at it. Get to know your dogs bark pitch- a "snake bark" is often very different (it was with Tip). His whole body language would change when he sensed a threat. Read up on the symptoms of snakebite, and don't hesitate if you feel something is wrong, time matters- and if the worst happens, it helps to know the species of snake (it was the first thing the vet asked), and please don't try to get in between the snake and and the dog, or call him off, they can lose concentration and it puts everyone in more danger. Have your vet number and emergency vet numbers in a prominent place. Not all dogs go after snakes, my border Collie and our nephew's dog have never attempted to attack a snake, yet (touch wood)I do accept that was because Tip found the threat first, though. However, please try not to worry too much, snakes really do not appear that often (Tip had lived for nine years and I now feel from looking at photo's that his eyesight may have clouded a little since his last checkup without us noticing). Just arm yourself with the facts, and invest in a snake bandage (for human use) and learn how to use it correctly , (they really do save lives) Forewarned is forearmed, and good luck to everyone during the snake season. I know I have scared a lot of people reading this, as we had done all this and it still happened to us. It was a freak thing, Tip made no sound that day, the other dogs did not leave my side to investigate. Nature can be cruel and it was no-one's fault. I just hope and pray that my advice, and that of others may help to avert a similar tragedy. Regards Di

We have to stand really still while our Border Collie Kira sniffs our knees. After we "pass" the test we are allowed inside where she gets super excited and 'buck Jumps" all around us, as she knows she isn't allowed to jump on people. :D Di

Sorry Lisa, your wet Nova is the FUNNIEST thing Wayne and I have seen in a long time  There really is not much dog under all the fluff, is there? ...but goodness he and Koda are getting more beautiful every day. Jack, how much did Koda weigh at Nova's age? Di -
Lovely photo Pers. Very emotive, and the colours are really attractive. It looks like she is trying to peer under the door for that "first glimpse". Well captured. Di

When Were You Convinced Your Dog Could Understand English?
tikira replied to Leah82's topic in General Dog Discussion
Tip always seemed to know "where is" too. He was quite helpful when I would be looking for my coffe dup. He would check the kitchen bench, the computer table and the bedroom bedside table for me, an occasionally would bark when he found it (I think that was luck though  ) He always knew "there's birds in your yard, do your job" and even if asleep in the bed or on the lounge would tear out at Jack Russell speed and do his job. I miss my boy, but at least the memories sometimes make me smile now. Di -
Treble is gorgeous, and already looks like he has always been with you. Thanks for the photo's and I look forward to many more. Di

How exciting for you, and a little scary too. Remembering back 10 years ago, first ever puppy, we had lots of "take him back" or "what have we done" moments. They will pass as you get into a new routine. Start as you mean to go on..... It solves a lot of Re-training issues down the track. If you don't want an adult dog jumping on you and biting your face, don't let puppy do it, they need consistancy. Read all you can on puppy training, and toilet training, here on DOL and elsewhere. "rubbing his nose in it" only makes him afraid of you, and he will learn to hide from you to go to the toilet, and that is a hard habit to break. He is only a baby, and relies on you for love, consistancy and training. Never ever call puppy to you and then punish him, he will learn that sometimes for "no reason he can think of" you turn into a crazy person and punish him, result- He just won't come when called, just in case.... It will be hard when you are so cross you could burst, but breathe deep, and don't call him, go get him if necessary. Never go crook at them unless you catch them in the act, it is useless to punish them even 5 minutes after they commit a crime. If you do catch them in the act I found with my boy that a deep "uh uh" worked brilliantly. He would stop what he was doing, and I could redirect him to something he was allowed to do. Puppy Proof your house. Just as you would with a toddler, NEVER leave anything laying around that could hurt him or you can't replace. Electrical cords, cooked bones, plastic bags, onions, shoes, garbage bins etc etc.... remove them or secure them. Give him plenty of toys that he is allowed to play with, but rotate them so he does not get bored. Keep vet numbers on your fridge. The best advice I ever heard was "when puppy is misbehaving, take a newspaper, roll it up tightly and...... bash yourself over the head saying "I am a bad bad owner" for letting him do that, or leaving that out for him. Join a good dog club or vet that offers puppy classes, it saved our relationship with our first dog. Ask questions, we are all here to help, and we were all once first timers! Good luck with your homework for the next exciting week, and we need pictures as soon as possible. These are just a few of the things I found helpful as I grappled with the responsibility of my first puppy. I know there are many more, and even 10 years down the track I am still learning.... but the rewards of a happy healthy relationship are so worth the puppy stage. Di

Lhok..... waiting with barely concealed impatience to see your new boy. I can't think of many other occasions when I have been so excited to see a new family member welcomed home. Wishing you so many happy years together Lhok Di

Pers, the nusery rhyme party trick must have had everyone fascinated, it is funny how most pets develop a "thing" that is theirs. Our Jack Russell's trick was to play dead when we pointed our finger at him and said BANG. He would hit the floor so quickly and stay so still until we released him, but of course we taught him that. We never got it on video either Thanks for sharing that special memory. Di

RIP beautiful Bernie, I sometimes think the silence is one of the hardest things when a loved one must leave us. Higs to you and your furry family. Please tell us more about the nursery rhyme mention when you feel up to it Pers, it sounds interesting. Di

Smash- I hope this potential problem continues to improve, there is great advice here already, so good luck with it all. I love the Tank photo's, but you are really mean giving him a bath... (couldn't do that here in Armnidale 2 degrees at 10 am) I love the look on Bernie's face in the pinned shot, it needs a clever caption. The rabbit looks like he is saying "look, you may be super cute... but I am the boss here, GOT IT" Willow is turning into a stunner, and really fits her name. Boxbright- the names of your dogs seems to be forming a pattern.... or is that wishful thinking? I can't wait to see baby Bailey photo's. We took photo's of a 9 year old Boxer and his family on Saturday, and I have fallen in love with him- I could so easily steal him, he was the best behaved dog I have met, and a stunning boy. Sadly they lost all their photo's of him as a puppy due to a computer malfunction, so everyone- print your photo's out and back them up, OFTEN. Di -
I have to say, Kira (border Collie), was as ugly as possible (in a ugly but cute way) as she grew through the gangly stage. She was all head and long legs, it is funny to look back on. Di

How big is he expected to get to Jack? Love the updates on him, and it will be interesting to continue to see him change in the upcoming years. Di -
Gosh Koda is starting to get lanky, isn't he? I just love the pics of him with his Teddy dog, obviously it is his best friend. Thanks for the Koda update. It is amazing how quickly the change. Di
