  1. Tilba responds better to hand signals than voice commands.
  2. Check out this link, it may help. http://www.dogstardaily.com/training/puppy...ing-12-18-weeks
  3. I guess you would get the sticky stuff out then wash out the wd40.
  4. It's for this reason that I would only get a puppy when I got Tilba. Sooty my son's dog isn't used to other dogs & can be a little too forward to say it mildly when she sees other dogs. In your friends case I think I would have a behaviourist come & see the 2 dogs together & assess the situation.
  5. I'm always looking for a reasonably priced good quality food. A friend highly recommended Bonnie Working Dog. But when I looked at the ingredient list I didn't get it. From memory the 1st ingredient was cereal & that was enough to turn me off it.
  6. He would need time to settle into his new home. Everything will be different for him. When I check vaccination certs I usually look for the next vac due. Usually the next year. He should have completed his vaccinations at about 16 weeks old. A good website to find out about everything dog is www.dogstardaily.com You can search for whatever you need to know. There are also videos to watch & radio programs to listen to. Good luck, I hope you have fun with him.
  7. Keep us posted as time goes by. Would love to know how it's going.
  8. I just found this thread today & am also wondering how Ruby is going 2-3 mths on?

  10. She's gorgeous. Ignore her by not looking at her, pushing her away, talking to whenever she's doing something you don't want. Any attention, good or bad, is what she wants. Whenever she's quiet is the time to tell her she's being good by giving a treat or cuddle. Free downloads of books Before & After You Get Your Puppy by Dr Ian Dunbar. Are you taking her to puppy pre school? www.dogstardaily.com
  11. I'm glad you've changed you mind about the pet shop & hope they give your deposit back. I was thinking the papers the were talking about would have only been vaccination cert & microchip registration papers. If they did have hip scores for the 'parents' you wouldn't know if they were from that pup's parents. They could be from any dogs. When you buy from a breeder you get the pups pedigree which lists it's parents, grandparents & gt grandparents. And when you see the hip scores & eye cert it has the names of the dogs on the pedigree. And you should be given copies of the health certs. As to raising a lab puppy. They are a large boisterous breed. Puppy training starts even b4 you get that puppy. Puppy pre schools usually take puppies from 8-16 weeks old. If you read the link I gave previously you'll get an idea on what's involved in training. Also with large breeds you need to grow pups slowly to help prevent joint & bone problems. Exercise should be limited until the pup is a year old for the same reasons. Good luck in your search.
  12. If you have time b4 Friday I suggest you have a look at this web site. www.dogstardaily.com Especially in the Training Textbook. Also you can download for free 'Before You Get Your Puppy'.
  13. I wouldn't pander to her. Put the food out for no more than 20 minutes. If she doesn't eat it put it away for next feed. After a day or so she should start to eat it, if not b4. Once she realises that that is all she's getting she'll eat. No dog will starve itself unless it's really sick. Make sure to always have clean water available. Do/did you give her other things besides the supercoat & mydog? I add something to most of my dog's kibble meals on alternate nights such as a raw egg, sardines, yoghurt, cottage cheese & raw bones 2-3 times a week. Here's a link to an alternative to drugs using apple cider vinegar. I used to use the cheap one from the supermarket but now have the 'Mother' one from the healthfood store. Works much better. http://www.earthclinic.com/Pets/allergies.html
  14. I'm glad to hear you & Bella had fun. I still haven't made the effort to do anything about it. Committed to my obedience club on Saturdays. So will they be running over the summer holidays or taking a break?
  15. Thanx for all the results wherezaball. Looks like all the competitors had a wonderful weekend. And congratulations to all the winners.
  16. I went today to watch, but didn't stay till the end. Who won? There was a great atmosphere there, I don't think I've seen so many gazebos all in one place. The dogs were really enjoying the competition. There were a lot of tired dogs & handlers by the afternoon.
  17. When Tilba was a puppy I put her breakfast in the kong & blocked the large hole with peanut butter, vegimite or yoghurt. For our larger dog I put a raw chicken wing inside. Break off the tip & 'stuff the other 2 sections with joint 1st. Takes longer to get out than kibble.
  18. Narrawallee Beach House near Ulladulla NSW South Coast, You only need to bring your clothes & food. Everything is supplied. Dogs allowed inside the only stipulation was you bring covers for the furniture if the dogs are so inclined. The only thing was the yard was said to be secure but I wouldn't leave my dogs alone in the yard if going out as 2 were wire & only a little over waist height. There's even toys, books, videos, colour pencils & games for the kids. http://www.takeabreak.com.au/Narrawallee/S...House.htm#rates
  19. You will have lots of moments with her in the near future with teething & chewing. If you need some help a good place to start is http://www.dogstardaily.com/ But no matter what she does you have a wonderful companion to enjoy for many years to come.
  20. I would say try to teach bark on command 1st. While he's barking at you do the hand signal to speak, fingers splayed out in his face. Once he gets the hang of that you can teach shush. While he's barking, hold a treat at his nose & when he sniffs at it say shush & hold your finger to your mouth. http://www.dogstardaily.com/videos/woofshush
  21. Read up on Nothing In Life Is Free. Basically the dog must 'sit' b4 everything. Sit means 'please'. Standing over a puppy/dog is a threat, so is staring into their eyes. Teach 'watch' with a happy face.
  22. For training at home I either use kibble or dog treats, such as Nature's Gift or straps. At the obedience club I use Chunkers. You get them from the dog food fridge at Woolies & Coles. They are little meat balls. I can get about 10 treats from one meat ball by using my finger nail to break little bits off. Tilba loves them.
  23. Yes it's a 2nd command. The steward usually takes the lead. Where ever you have your hands b4 the recall is where they should be after you call the dog. So if you leave you dog with your hands at your waist, that's where they should be after the hand signal.
  24. When I had a new puppy come to live with us I wouldn't let them alone with the older dog, both 7.5 at the time, until the pup had grown & was able to take the exuberance & strength of the older dog. Once they became used to each other & I felt they could be reasonably trusted they were left alone in the backyard while I went out. As I don't work it wasn't for long. In your case I'd set up a long term confinement area in the house for the pup with bed or crate, some sort of toilet substrate, water & some safe toys. Like a puppy pen, laundry or bathroom, as long as they were puppy safe.
