  1. Noticeable flea bites only indicates that the dog currently has fleas. You can identify prolonged flea infestation, as the coat and skin will be badly affected by the fleas, the scratching and usually by secondary infections as well.
  2. That is really sad. That is the exact reason why when I coordinated GAP, I refused to take pups. If there was some injury that ruled them out as a racing prospect at such a young age, then there was likely a badly healed bone injury that would cause arthritis later. If there is any lameless, there is pain. Don't be in any doubt about that. I do not think you should rehome this dog in this condition. It would be unethical to advertise this dog, because you would probably get a 'pity' adoption. It will lead to heartbreak. (Have a couple of terrible stories, but don't feel like sharing right now. ) Maybe wait to see how he grows a bit, but don't expect badly healed bones to somehow be able to be fixed. If the damage is in the joint, there will still be painful arthritis even if you do go ahead with surgery. Sandown vets are probably the ones to see, but be prepared for them to advise you to euthanise instead of amputate, because they might do that. Maybe it will be the best option for you to amputate and keep the dog, but see the Sandown vet first. Good luck. Edited to add - All greyhounds I have known that have had a leg amputated adapt brilliantly, it is amazing. It doesn't really disable them at all.
  3. They don't have to be. But being a dog lover, I will support businesses whose proprietors and staff also love dogs and animals in general. People that don't like dogs and animals can go broke and live in poverty as far as I am concerned. Let's have names please. Butchers that seem happy to sell food for dogs, and butchers that would rather not. I would hate to inadvertently support businesses that are anti-dog.
  4. In the car industry they are called tyre kickers. But you don't see signs at car yards saying "No Time Wasters". Instead the staff have been trained to qualify potential buyers, so that their time isn't wasted. It is exactly the same deal with dogs, except that instead of money being the only qualifier, there may be many other things the seller wishes to qualify before making the sale. It is human nature to dream and want to look at nice cars, nice houses, nice dogs whatever. If you are good at selling stuff you will be good at dealing with that. If you don't have adequate sales skills, but you try to sell things anyway, you will probably end up in many situations where your time will be wasted. The sad thing is, blaming the customers for your own lack of skill (by saying No Time Wasters) will put off many people from even making an enquiry. If we are trying to get more people to buy purebred dogs then we should understand that sort of advertising does discourage many people.
  5. It is the set up and organisation of the dog show that would need to change. Not the behaviour of the exhibitors. People act how they act. You can't change how the public act or how exhibitors act. You can however organise an event that provides an easy way for the public to interact and get the information they need. At present, most dogs shows are not being organised in that way at all. Until clubs start to organise their events with the public in mind, dog shows will not be an inviting place for the public, as they cater only to the exhibitor. It would take more effort and resources and clubs have to decide make the effort if they want to increase the population or the popularity of their breed.
  6. I agree with this. "No Time Wasters" is boganspeak for "I really have no idea how to properly and efficiently qualify a potential puppy buyer, and I take no responsibility for lacking those skills." Doesn't mean that their dogs are not worth buying though. They may be a great dog breeder.
  7. I got Woody and Coconut because of their colours. I had always said that I would adopt a dun coloured greyhound if one ever came up. Two came up at the same time.
  8. You can't really blame the people. At some clinics the owner is asked if they would like all sorts of options, and are made to feel guilty if they don't take them. For future litters, give puppy buyers a list of vets that you would be happy to use and a price limit on what you are prepared to pay for. That way if they choose extra services they know they will have to pay for them.

  11. You don't need to scan the dog and you can register it in America before you go. AKCCAR
  12. You did in the first post in the thread when you said "There has been a surge of x bred oodles tailored to size and shape - a round dog to fit a hole, no shaving around the edges. " That is a myth, and you didn't even question that. They are bred for profit first and as companions second. Well you seem to now realise that it is only the marketing that is tailored, not the dog, so that is a start. I would like to see more advertising of purebreds. Putting up a website like you describe is one thing, getting people to visit it is another thing. That would require advertising too. Many people come here when doing a search on dogs breeds, so I think that we need to keep getting the message across here that cross-bred dogs are not what you buy if it is important that the dog is the right fit.
  13. Don't worry, I certainly understood where you were coming from - you weren't promoting the oodles breeds at all, you were simply stating a fact that are purebred becoming obsolete because of the influx of the oodles out there and what is going to happen in the future. Not once did you mention that you were advocating this. I don't think either of you do understand. Or you would realise how destructive it is to perpetuate the lie that cross-bred dogs are somehow tailored. It goes to the heart of this issue. Cross-bred dogs are random, purebred dogs are tailored. Yes, purebreed people have a lot of work to do in the marketing department. But until then, how about reading and learning more about how purebreed dogs are different from cross breeds rather than perpetuating lies on this forum. As long as people go on believing that cross-bred dog are tailored or have common traits not found in purebreeds, we have a lot of work to do. If you post inflammatory statements like that here on here, it won't go unnoticed, I promise you that.
  14. Some do end up with a problem coat, and those people are not happy. Where as they would have been had they bought a purebred with a predictable coat. Those breeding programs are in place and have been for a long time. This website is for the purebreed dog community, what do you think purebreed breeders are trying to do? Many of them are breeding moderate type, friendly, healthy, low-shedding small companion dogs from the most suitable parents they can get. The only difference is the way the two different categories of dogs are marketed. We know why so many people choose the cross breed dogs. Even in this thread that is supposedly not promoting cross bred dogs, people are coming out with ridiculous statements about what can be expected in a cross-breed dog.
  15. I would never put tiles over floor boards in an old QLDer. Better just to sell the house and buy a low-set modern house if you want a tiled floor.
  16. Is it hardwood or pine? How big and heavy are your dogs? We have pine and the dogs have scratched them. Just a bit too soft for dog nails. The dogs are also in danger of slipping on the floor while playing and hurting themselves. The enclosed verandah is hardwood, and it is not scratched, just scuffed. My suggestion is that if you keep the floors, buy very large rugs.
  17. Cross bred dogs are not tailored to anything. They come in a wide variety of size and shape and you cannot predict what that size or shape will be. Your problem is that you believe the marketing. Oodles or whatever are not a round dog to fit a hole, they are a random dog that is less likely to fit than a purebred that has been chosen to fit. Purebred dogs are fairly predictable in terms of coat type, size, shape, energy level, food requirements, guarding instinct, retrieving instinct, any dog instinct you can mention. Modern suburban families really need to consider all of these traits before they buy a dog, to avoid a terrible mistake. People buying oodles and other crossbreds risk taking on a dog that might be really unsuited to their needs. This is a purebred forum, so I suggest that you do a lot more reading here before suggesting that our dogs are less suited as companions than a randomly bred dog.
  18. There will be a wait with not many litters being bred, but it is impossible to guess how long you would wait. If a breeder or club takes down your name on a waiting list, keep in regular email contact with them to let them know you are still interested and to ask whether planned litters are still going ahead. Don't hassle them for answers though, because they can't produce pups on demand and shouldn't be placed under any pressure. Join the Boston club if there is one in your state, and go along to their shows if you can. Sometimes breeders will place pups with people who show more enthusiasm for the breed and willingness to communicate than with a virtual stranger that has left their name on a list a year ago. Pups may be born at a time that is inconvenient to you, so if you really want one, commit to making yourself available should you be offered a pup. How badly do you want a Boston? Or would another breed work for you? Many breeds are more easily available than Bostons.
  19. I would have to consider how close the friend was and her attitude towards dogs before I decided whether to let her stay. If she was a close friend who loved dogs and was committed to working with her child in overcoming its fears, then I would invite her to stay. (But still not have anyone sleeping on the lounge room floor) If she didn't like dogs or didn't think it was important for her to help her child feel comfortable around them, then no, she would not be welcome to visit, let alone stay.
  20. It sounds very likely that the dog was hit by a car. The idea that the dog was bashed by a 'pitbull hater' seems pretty far fetched. Sounds like somebody doesn't want to take responsibility for their dog not being contained.
  21. If the dog is used to greeting people happily in beds on the floor, then this situation could be a problem. If the toddler screams it may frighten the dog away, but it also may excite the dog to a state where it may jump or mouth the child. I would say unlikely to provoke an attack, but certainly likely to result in unpleasant consequences. Why can't the toddler sleep in the baby's room with the door shut?
  22. Well done, that is a fantastic photo. Be proud. I second that. Don't just sign over ownership of your image, without realising it. Renumeration for each specific use has a certain value. Copyright can be worth a lot more than that, I would have thought a lot more than the cost of a camera and a few lenses. Think about who is using it and what they stand to gain.
  23. Some breeds only come into season yearly and some individuals can vary a bit too. Not sure why. It just occurred to me, could she already have been pregnant when you got her? This is something I would have a think about. Any doubts, go see a vet tomorrow.
  24. Selective hearing can happen in any breed. While a cav maybe easier to distract from a scant than a beagle, there are things cavs like doing that can make them selectively deaf too. The only solution is training. A cavalier will probably be easier to train than a terrier, but it will still require regular training if you want to avoid selective hearing.
  25. Are you keeping her or rehoming her? If you are keeping her, you could wait and see. As long as you know exactly what to look for, and have a safe place to secure her when in season. You could wait as long as 18 months with some bitches. If you are rehoming her, you should get her ultrasounded, or opened up as a last resort. It is unethical to rehome without a desexing certificate and a vet won't give one to you unless they are sure she has been desexed.
