  1. We had exactly the same experience with our tibbie girl when she had an exploratory procedure under general anaesthetic, to check her anal glands for cancer. The specialist vet asked me before the operation, did she have any other conditions. I said she had a strong tendency to skin allergy. After the operation, all around her rear end was exactly the same as your boy's. I can only think that the hair was shaved right down to the skin & then copiously swabbed with anti-bacterial stuff. And the combination had appalling consequences for her skin. In fact, it looked exactly like serious burns. She screamed in agony. Vet gave us neotopic....but she still screamed in agony. Finally, like you, we got to another vet who gave anti-inflammatories, anti-biotics & something for the pain. Also neotopic-H cream. It was a horrible experience for that little dog....the severe pain & distress went on for days. Took a couple of weeks to get close to being normal. I couldn't even say that it had been an necessary operation. The specialist vets said there could be cancer...yet the only evidence was her glands were blocked. I asked could it simply be impacted anal glands. Well, she had the op....with the results showing no cancer....but the anal gland was impacted. Like I'd suggested. We were extremely annoyed.....having paid around $800 for an operation which had not even been needed, but resulted in agony for our little one, as a consequence. Interestingly, when the vet who finally gave emergency aid for her, phoned that vet hospital for specific info.....they had no mention of the anal gland surgery, nor of the serious skin consequences on their records. Frankly, I think they were worried they'd get sued. I dont think its the vet's fault. It is nessecary to shave close to the skin and thoroughly clean the area, to perform such procedures. Some dogs are very sensitive, some dogs i groom skin will go right off just from the use of a #10 blade on the sani areas, this is a standard grooming practice and once we know a dog is senseitive in this way can to our best to avoid or minmise fututre irritaion, vets dont have this same chance but when prepping for surgery.
  2. Yup to much will give the runs Use sparingly it is pretty potent stuff.
  3. Dont remember the cost involved from my vet nursing days, but i do remember we use to remove the anal glands of pets (not just dogs) who had issues on a regular basis. Once they are gone= No more problems.
  4. Apart from the fact that Aloveen is by dermcare and resi-soother is by virbac (so just diifrent manufactures), i think the resi-soothe has a higher concentration of colloidial oatmeal in supension (although dont quote me) i have always found resi-soothe a bit more intensive. As far as the oatemeal conditioners go. Like i said but for a yeast infection on the skin, i owuld go with somthing broad spectrum (like malaseb) and with the antifungal/ anti bactrial properties of the pyohex.
  5. I would go with a malaseb shampoo, make sure you leave it on for 10-15 mins, then follow with the pyohex conditioner, and leave that on dont rinse (twice a week if possible)- that would me my go for a yeasty skin. Otherwise i like Aloveen or Resi-soothe
  6. As long as they do all 11 types of gastro- intestinal worms (including the subspecies), be warned some cheaper brands and some supermarket brands do not, always read the packet to confirm. .
  7. IMO Schmakos are just as bad of not even worse than those rawhide things they were giving you at pet barn. Why not try some dried liver or look for some natural (ie free of colous, preservitives, artifical flavourings etc). I always tell people just skip that whole pet food isle in the supermarket cause no good can come from it.
  8. I recently posted a thread about my 14 year old peke who appeared to be suffering an acute case of dementia (as well as other things), and had started barking all night. Well, she was put on vivitonin by my vet, the results were pretty much instant, within a day or two of begining the drug therapy she statred sleeping soundly all night, she was put on 2 week trial and cause it worked so well she has now been put on it for life. She is also a cronic pancreatitis sufferer. My vet said that there are no known side effects of long term use of the drug. I guess they way i see it is at 14 years of age and with a few other health issues she has it will prolly be somthing else that takes her to the bridge, long before any drugs have a chance to develop side effects. I have found the vivitonin has defianlty helped make my Rosie much easier to live with which is a huge plus as euthanasia had crossed my mind a couple of weeks ago. Rosie is on a cocktail of diffrent drugs daily and my vet also said that the vivtonin was fine to use in conjunction with the others meds. One thing my vet did mention, was that the vivitoin will just cease to work one day, although we dont known exactly when, and its diffrent for each individual it could be in three weeks, six months or 2 years, but one thing she knows for sure is it will eventually no longer have effect.
  9. I LOVE LOVE LOVE!!! the rufus and coco range After trying the grooming products and suppliments, i now stock them in my store and they have been hugely popular
  10. somone mentioned to me the other week about a fab mobile guy, keep meaning to get his number, sorry thats not much help to you now i know Sttrlvr is right i think- Its the royal- just buy a new pair. some sharpeners are useless and dodgy, and if u get somone out of desperation who knows what they are like, i think most of us have had one of these people stuff up or tools at some time.
  11. Absolutley go for it You sound like a perfect home and great owner, you already have two who i assume get along and are social, and as long as you can afford it financially, i say the more the merryer! I have 4 and counting :p
  12. On pets we always use a #10, on show dogs normally a #30 a couple of days before a show. For aroud the eyes just hold the head firmly and keep the skin tight, use the edge of the blade and should be able to get right along the eye rim. Hope that helps, good luck
  13. Sadley over the weekend things have not gone well for poor old Rosie, she has had internal hemmoraging (sp) of the upper bowel and is not well at all. I have discussed some treatment options with my vet re the dementia but her main concern at the moment is the latest developments. Thankyou deerhound for the link, i will check it out. I will keep you posted on how Rosie is going Thanks again, Brad.
  14. Rosie's had a thorough once over from the vet and some test's taken just to make sure she is ok for her age and her few health problems are still the same but being managed fine, so we have concluded that it is just a case of her losing her marbles. Tonight i will try leaving her in the lounge room with a lamp and the TV on and see if that helps, at this point i am desperate and will try anything. Thanks so much guys for your understanding and suggestions.
  15. Thanks everyone for your input. I tried the crate and really though that might be the solution as she is good with crates and likes them, sadly not, she just sat in the crate and barked. There is just no stopping her other than to hold her and pat her and give her attention, i really dont know what to do, my vet suggested that there is not much that can be done if it is dementia, but we cant keep going like this i have not slept this week and its really taking its toll. Thanks everyone for help
  16. Thanks for your input Nekhbet. I tried calling my vet but she’s not in today so I will call tomorrow. I have given her a once over (I worked as a vet nurse previously and have since been in grooming for 6years) and everything looks ok but I will still get my vet to give her a once over of course. No offence taken the only thing I can think of is that she has gone senile, my other old girl who I sent to the bridge 12 months ago went senile but it was a gradual process over about 6 months before she was really bad, that was very hard to see and deal with but at least she did it quietly, don’t know how I am going to manage Rosie if she is to bark all night as part of her senility.
  17. Hi Everyone Not sure this is exactly the right place to post this but did not really know where to post it, anyway here goes. I have an old Pekingese (approx 13 years old) who I rescued about 5 years ago. Since Sunday night she has started barking all night long, it usually starts somewhere around midnight and ends about 7 am once we are finally up and getting ready for work. She sleeps in her own bed on the floor in the bedroom she goes out for final wee's about 10pm and then I put her in her bed, she is old and not very mobile as she has very bad but sadly inoperable luxating patella's. Nothing in here routine or life has changed in the last week? when it first started on Sunday night I tried ignoring her, when it did not stop I told her in a firm voice "Quite!", she still did not stop, I thought perhaps she needed to go the toilet I took her out a few times in the course of the night and she did nothing, or will do a wee but come straight back in and within 5 minutes start barking again. I try to ignore her as I don’t want to reinforce the behaviour but it is just relentless "woof woof woof!" and I worry about the neighbours as late at night the sound travels. She has started getting out of her bed and wondering around the house barking at night, I have tried putting her on the bed and she still barks, she is quite during the day and does spend all day asleep although this is what she has done for the last 5 or so years I have had her. With her age and health she is not the sort of dog that you can take for a walk or really be active, and as we are at work all day she is home asleep all day. This one really has me stumped I am about to call my vet and have a chat to her to see if she has any suggestions, but thought I would see if any of you guys had any thoughts or suggestions, the only thing I am thinking is some sort of dementia, although it has come on very suddenly. Like I said she is eating, drinking, going to the toilet and acting normal in every other way except the all night barking. Any thoughts would be appreciated I have not had more than 2 hours sleep in the last 4 nights and am at my wits end with her. Thanks, Brad.
  18. I got a couple of simpson supa jet dryers, they are great Been trying to get another one for a while they are out of stock atm. I would go with Challenge
  19. Thanks Malamute, i think it is the same dryer, just one is on a stand the other a wall arm. Do you need to get it serviced very often???
  20. well i am assuming no ones uses liberty dryers- I will take the lack of replys as a sign in itself
  21. I Clip quite a few of them, never had a problem with coat growing back. As others have said another alternative might be to strip the coat and trim up the furnishings a bit, but you say you not that worried about his coat so why not clip him. JMO.
