  1. If your dog is teething or has any wounds or punctures in the area of the mouth then yes,it is possible for Tetanus to enter the system that way.
  2. Yes I am in complete agreement here. A sorry situation but I can't see a good outcome. Were you aware the pup had a murmur when you bought it? Yes he is blue. I had no idea about the issues regarding them until I spoke to the SBT club of Vic today. It was a very expensive lesson to learn. There was no murmur detected at 6 weeks. The same vet that did the 6 week vet check picked up the murmur at 10 weeks. There is possibly no good outcome, which is something we will just have to live with. I will not return him knowing he will be PTS. I really just wanted to know if there wasd anyone in the same situation that could share their dogs life and maybe what I should expect? You need a diagnosis before one could even begin to look at that, so a specialist opinion is what you need sorry.
  3. What great advice .... NOT!! Not even funny.
  4. I would most certainly be seeking an accurate diagnosis of exactly what is causing the murmur. You may need to be prepared to break your sons heart. If it was me, I would get a diagnosis and possibly be returning the pup, some conditions could most certainly mean a very reduced lifespan. A badly affected pup may never be able to play as it should with your son.
  5. Work to be done on what exactly? What do they think is wrong with the Labrador as a breed today. I am really interested in their take on this. The Labs I rub shoulders with still work, compete in dog sports, are excellent family dogs and sometimes grace the show ring. I don't from where I sit see any great need to alter much. What I would change is the people that own the ones I see through my work, a different mob of dogs altogether, that often seem to end up in homes that tend to over feed under exercise and expect a super family dog with no training. Mostly overweight and soundness issues arising from that, and often skin complaints due to poor diet. How does one group get it so right and another so wrong? Genetic influence or demographic?
  6. So you would modify the Lab to suit lazy owners. That I do not understand. I have lived in Qld since 1965 and have shot over our own lab and alongside countless others, they all did their job and did not appear to be suffering in any way from the climate. Granted they were all fit and healthy, but the double coats have never seemed to me to be an issue. Maybe you could expand on your reasoning for wanting to see changes.
  7. This has been done. What were the results of the tests?
  8. The OP has a dog that has issues, so in her case she needs to use an appropriate dose, otherwise it is pointless.
  9. To stop the irritation you need to find what causes it, she obviously reacts to something that she inhales, eats or comes in contact with.
  10. So you are claiming that there are breeds that have no sound healthy animals, or you just wish to toss everything out because SOME may not be.
  11. It could be something as simple as a website template being used and an inexperienced site builder.
  12. I agree, lets just keeping saying that this has nothing at all to do with Australian pedigree dogs and sooner or later someone might believe it. No let's make it an even playing field, how about making the "producers" of the thousands of unsound and unhealthy mutts responsible for their stuff ups too, and while we are at it acknowledge that there are many Breeders of registered purebred dogs that are doing the right thing. I'm getting pretty damn tired of people blinking and looking at me like I have two heads when I tell them that my registered purebred dogs are living healthy and happy lives into their mid to late teens. Yeah I know how can they they are purebred, right. I don't know any Breeder in my circle that denies that there are some problems, but they all say the same, acknowledge that it is not across the board.
  13. I think it is really sad that the huge numbers of Breeders that breed healthy sound dogs are being ignored. The numbers of unhealthy or unsound mutts and mongrels that I see far outnumber the ailing purebreds.
  14. I couldn't agree more with all of what you've said here. All dogs have a purpose, which shouldn't be forgotten In the bigger scheme of things! And not all types of dogs are for everyone, lets not keep punishing certain breeds because they don't fit our ideal of what a dog should be Yes It comes down to responsible choices and responsible ownership.
  15. SPONDYLOLITHESIS or Wobblers Syndrome is condition caused by a narrowing or defect in the cervical vertebrae.
  16. I have suffered with hands like you describe for quite a few years, I started off with Oster clippers and then Wahl. Last year I bought the Andis AGC super 2 speed and I am really happy as they are so much better for my hands, I still have a bad days if I am scissoring a lot but that is all. I love them.
  17. Again from the great Wiki but it does cover most of the basics.
  18. Might be an idea if you checked your facts first before making this Ignorant statement. Whats so ignorant about bringing to peoples attention the futile banning of the importation of the GSD based on incorrect fear based assumptions? Ok so the ban actually ENDED in the 70's. And the main fear was that crossed with a Dingo it would create a sheep killing super dog. But it still stands as an example of something I would not like to see in this country again when it comes to jumping to conclusions about dog breeds and agression. Might be an idea if you read the thread again..... Yep Even thought the import ban was lifted there were still many places in Australia where well into the '80s heavy restrictions were in place on ownership, including no entire animals at all in some places. All based on ignorance and fear.
  19. I agree. BSL is train wreck without brakes. We are going to end up in a dogless society or a society where breeds are so dumbed down they will be unrecognisable.
  20. No. They'll be waiting a very long time. I don't know about that...they are already a recognised breed in America in the miscallenes(spelling) class. Its called a Mi Ki Mi-Ki A toy sized companion dog the Mi-Ki is a loving and friendly pet. There are several theories as to how exactly the breed developed. One of the theories or origins is that it was developed in the 1980 in Wisconsin by one breeder named Micki Macklin. In this origin several toy breeds were crossed in the lines including stock from the Yorkshire Terrier, Papillon, Shih Tzu, Japanese Chin and Maltese lines. Other theories of origin from different clubs include the same general foundation breeds, however not all include the Shih Tzu lines and some have almost no records of the exact toy breeds used to develop the Mi-Ki. Regardless of the foundation lineage the Mi-Ki does have breed standards and is recognized by many of the individual registries although not currently with the major Kennel Clubs. The Mi-Ki is a toy size companion pet, not typically weighing more than 10 pounds at maturity. It can be long or short coated, either variety is acceptable, but on both coat types the ears have to feathered and highly mobile. The tail is carried high over the hips and is fringed, giving a balanced appearance to the dog. They can come in a variety of colors from fawns to browns and even blue colored coats. Eye colors vary from dark brown to blue and should correspond with the coat color. As with any toy breed dental problems can occur in the Mi-Ki so regular dental hygiene is essential. The shorter muzzled dogs are prone to the same respiratory problems as Pugs and should be carefully monitored when exercising. Anything goes and give it a name.................right.
  21. I have found that many animals with tear staining due to blocked tear ducts respond very well to gentle massage under the corner of the eye. Some dogs will only need this to keep the problem in check others may need the tear ducts unblocked by the Vet. Change of diet to eliminate grains and sugars is also a priority. I have never had to resort to surgical intervention or products such as Angel eyes.
  22. WHY?? The desexing should be happening further up the food chain, that is where the problem is.
  23. Do reproductive organs create aggresive dogs? NO Do Idiot owners and equally stupid acts by the public cause dog attacks? YES I do not support a blanket killing of any dog that bites, some people ask to be bitten, every incident should be investigated. Dogs should not pay the ultimate price for what is often human stupidity.
  24. Ok well that is fine if you are not worried about export ban because of the future you see for kennel club dogs. However, that has nothing to do with banning exports. So I will worry about it, because of all the other dog owners of mixed breeds, cross breeds and purebred dogs not in the kennel club and those kennel club dog owners who are interested in dealing with this issue about banning dog for export. I hope most dog owners can try to stay focused on the issue and work together as one strong voice, to prevent any bans on exporting dogs. Good luck with that! The problem with these sort of knee jerk reactions is that we have a huge population of gullible and misinformed people who will sign anything and support anything put under their noses without a second glance. All many people can see is the images of tortured cattle, they can't see further than that.
