Have thought of getting those, but just haven't got around to it as yet! Are they really hard and would it be a potential issue with wearing down of teeth?

This is the reply I got back So no Beef treats for me from here in future - shame because the dogs like them. As an Australian beef producer I will not support imported products.

I was recently walking the WHippets - on lead - along and on lead beach. there was a bloke further up with his Jack Russell off lead. HE told it no it ran straight up to mine who just looked at it. It then lunged towards Rommi so I roarded at it and it ran back to it's owner. Now what would you think he would do???????? He grabbed it belted it then let it run off again. Although this time it kept away from us. Bloody morons!

Takes all kinds!! Sorry about your experience it can be very frightening. What I have done in the past is put my pram brake on and move a short distance away from it as long as the dog appears to be interested in attacking my dog, if It seems human aggressive you of course do not go anywhere. Stand infront of your dog - if you can get it to sit and stay, if not just hold it there. Hands on hips, feet slightly apart, look at it and "roar" and I mean get a lung full of air and mean it- a roar that means if you come near me or my family I will take you apart limb from limb! If in the rare case this does not work you do what you need to and yes on two seperate occassions I have used my boot and it only took one kick. Goodluck with your walk this afternoon and I hope you both have nice peaceful walks in future.

Email Sherel and she should be able to answer your question - which is a good one by the way.

The Strangest Cross Breed You Have Ever Seen?
OSoSwift replied to jackie_a1's topic in General Dog Discussion
A jack Russell X Cattle Dog - quite a few actually and not related! Golden Retriever X Shih Tzu. Looked kinda like Barkley of Sesame Street but had short legs, one front leg was very bowed and tunred out, the other nice and straight. All four legs were short, she was very long in body and had a LArge head. Coat grew about 4 inshes longa nd was shaggy. Sweet dog. Jack Russell X Stafford Border Collie X Westie -
Personally myself, I would be reluctant to return the puppy as well regardless of wether I decided to keep it as a show dog. If the person had been to the doctor had the tests etc then they would have known. I have heard the asthma excuse many many times. I think my faith in the person would have been undermined as well.

Personally I think a Labrador puppy with a young family is a potential recipe for disaster and they only grow up when they are past middle age - unless of course they are fat and can't be botehred moving! I have had chats with many people with young families who were interested in LAbradors who have changed their mind whe they realise they are a working dog and the pups and adolescents can be bloody full on. The only way to quieten them down half the time is to make them obese, which unfortunately does happen. Now I know there are some very Laid back Labs that are not obese so nobody needs to jump down my thorat, but to me they are certainly not the majority. I think many people buy crossbreeds because they don't have to answer questions they don't want to and they are easy to find and get. Oh I want a pup, bang you have it in under a week! Part of that problem is that purebred breeds are given such a hard time by many areas that they have cut down the litters they have bred and it is now hard quite often to find a purebred rego'd dog within a less than 18 month period- depending on breed of course.

I am quite sure Lewis will get it. Rommi I don't think finds it as easy as Lewis, but anyway so far she really doesn't enjoy it. I will continue to do some shorter distances and she how she goes, but Lewis is naturally the one with more stamina for distance and always has been. I was quite suprised by some of the responses I got on the forum. Some positive ones but many where along the lines of what are you thinking!! -
I have to say I fully understand what you are saying. One vet got a puppy at 6 weeks of a popular breed, not rego'd and commented about just how much of a baby they are at 6 weeks compared to the 8 weeks of their first dog (registered purebred from an ethical breeder) They said they could now understand why I pushed the puppies staying with their litter until 8 weeks. None of the people in my vet clinic that I am aware of have a purebred froma rego'd breeder. One is a pound rescue, one is a petshop puppy, one unrego'd BYbred, two are crossbred and I know at least one was paid for but not sure where from, anotehr has a Petshop crossbreed and a rescue crossebreed. As for the rest who knows. I was thought of as strange when I worked there! If a badly bred dog of a recognisable breed came in it was blame the breed. If it was a mutt it was bad luck. Riddler The issue with the testing is some strange person assessing a dogs temperment - particularly guarding and guardian breeds as they may not react favourably in a strange environment with a eprson they do not know. Which part of that is so hard for you to understand????????

No-one knows how they would react until they are in that situation. I just hope most people never have to be. Good time to move on............ -
Endurance Test 2011 Thread

Done some training runs with the dogs. I have learnt very quickly it is not Rommi's cup of tea after around a km and Lewis is wanting to keep going after three. I think that clearly shows me that Lewis will be the ET dog and we will pass on that one for Rommi. I did around 2 kms today with Lewis. On a Whippet forum I got some negative comments regarding my motive for attempting an ET with a Whippet as they are designed for short bursts of speed not endurance. So today I did a leisurely 2 kms or close to with Lewis, no lead (we are on a large farm so no danger with roads etc) and he stuck next to my left side and did whatever pace I did - slow going up the big hill to the house I can assure you! He wasn't even panting, or looking tired at all! I was a different story!! Speaking of heart rates, they ask for a base heart rate before the ET. What do they need to return to after each section?? the base heart rate or X amount of heart beats above???? Lewis's RHR at home on the lounge is 38 to 40 bpm. After 2kms of varied speeds his heart immediately after was 78bpm. I know when I push him harder it will be higher. -
And , yes we do have enough sick adn vicious dogs here, interestingly the people who pay the required money to import are most likely not responsible for producing them. Therefore I do not see how bringing this in is going to reduce the incidences involving vicious dogs. Maybe taking idiot owners and breeders out the back and removing their influence may work a little better than stopping ethical people from bringing in new bloodlines to expand their gene pools.
-
I think people are more concerned about the temperment tests required before a dog can be imported. No-one I know would import a dog with a known and potentially genetic health issue. Many breeds could potentially fail the temperment tests just because of what breed they are and the jobs that they are meant to do. Not all dogs are supposed to be friendly with all people, the should be loyal and frinedly towards people VERY close to them not all like bouncy happy Labradors. Also who is the person who assess the dogs, what criteria is used??? who deems what is acceptable?? Can a Dobe guard against an unknown person when they are stressed out and in a foreign environment or does that mean they are immediately banned from being imported?? I think this has the possiblity to be abused and cause a large amount of problems. Not all dog breeds are meant to welcome all with open arms but they are still sound animals mentally and physically.

It can be very frustrating but you can either give in and get a puppy from someone who doesn't care and live with that decision for many years seeing each day the issues it brought, or you can dig in with determination and find what it is you seek. There are some things I will not compromise on and one is I have learnt my lesson I will never go to the easiest source for a puppy it will be the best one. If you give in that easily then go to a BYB, problem is you may regret it for a much longer time than it takes to find the right breeder.
-
If you have the time - go for it. What better way to improve than to have a very talented dog! ETA - I was thinking agility also and was thinking jeebus if she thinks she doesn't have the skills then best I give up now before I make a complete fool of myself!!

Sounds stupid to me. As if people would allow dogs they have spoend thousands on roam around and attack people or animals. When are these people going to get it through their brains that the highest amount of dog attacks come from babdly bred and raised dogs. Usually from litters pupped out in BYards in nnot very good conditions, then are owned by people that are either down right bloody stupid and want a tough dog or have no idea about the dog they have in their back yard and don't do the appropriate training and socilisation. I can understand why people who's interest lies in the guardian and workings breeds are very concerned. These dogs are not supposed to be everyones friends, but it sure does not mean they pose a danger to us and our animals. arrgghhh I am getting so frustrated with the crap that goes on in regard to dog these days. Why don't "they" do a recording of data of all the dogs that are euthed for dog attacks ie where have they come from, what training etc has been done as well as all the dogs that end up in the pound system. Well I do know why because they want to keep picking on the people who breed the least amount of dogs and where a majority do the right thing. Why? because they are the easiest to pick on and the only ones who have a paper trail to follow.!!!!!!! Cranky and going to move away from the computer now!

I looked at the Rotations but it was very expensive. It seems a good food though. I agree Miranda about the Holistic Dog food , that fact that grains and by products are the first ingredient does not impress me along with the fact we don't know which grains, then meat and by-products from lamb AND poultry when it says it is a lamb food, does not impress me either. I also like the Black Hawk and dogs are doing great on it. It states which grains there are, the lamb is the only meat ingredient it is first and has no by-products. It is also extremely good value for money. It is also important to me that I buy Australian where possible.

I haven't seen a lot of his shows but I think he does have a body language that comes across as he is very confident and as a leader. I find quite often at dog training that if an owner is having problems getting a behaviour they want and I help, the dog will quite often do it for me or at least try. I think that may be because I have a different body language than their owners do - not sure, but I have had a few different breeds and am yet to have one that has become a problem dog even when they would be regarded by most as a dominant dog. I guess I feel more confident than some people out there and the dogs recognise that and it helps to calm them??? anyway, some people have it and I think Caesar does from the little I have seen. As for the other things he does, I cannot comment as I haven't seen them. As for my training methods - I still have a lot to learn!

Who cares how bad the small dogs injuries were, it really doesn't matter. Having said that I remember a toy poodle coming in who had been grabbed by a larger dog. On chomp. SHe had a small laceration on her abdomen around 2 cms long. When she was knocked out it was discovered the tooth had gone thorugh all the layers into the abdomen and luckily not badly but had damaged her intestines. What has happened on the outside may not be a true reflection of what has happened on the inside. -

That is horrendous - just horrendous. I am so thankful the old man was okay, the baby was okay and the little dog was okay. The fact the dogs got out to do it is just disgusting and I hope they are reported. -
Just had a look around that site and cannot find anywhere that states the treats are made in Australia from Australian product. It only seems to state that they are an Australian owned company, not where the treats come from. Hmmm The lamb page says made from Australian lamb The Beef page doesn't Neither does the Pork page Chicken page is Australian Chicken Roo says made from all Australian Roo - well um I would hope so!!! Fish Products are Australian and New Zealand Turkey is Australian Products. I have sent them an email regarding which products are Australian Produce. At this point it seems the beef and Pork are not from Australian products which means in future I will not be buying Beef one if that is the case. I am sure they had on their before they were Australian produce or I wouldn't have bought them! I will let you know what they say.

Just have to add that because I had to pull up the page to get the web address . Then I thought well we haven't had any for a little bit and the dogs could do with some,so..................................................... ...$122 later I am back on DOL!!!!

This is the one I go to http://www.australianpettreatcompany.com.au/ There was a thread recently that had some other names as well. I personally stay away from anthing dried/smoked that has bone in it. It just gets to hard and brittle for my liking. I get the beef tendons, whizzers, roo flpas and roo tendons. These are quite hard and long lasting. I generally stay away from rawhide as it is not a natural dried product and I have heard of dog choking on sticky flaps of rawhide and getting blockages as well. Having said that I guess there is a risk in lots of things that happen only rarely.
