  1. Stef, please consider taking her to the vet for alazin. It really would be a terrible waste to see another x breed dogs home special litter being born when you had every opportunity to prevent it. Puppies sound cute and fun and all that, but reality is FAR from it hon. We dont need another litter of cross breed pups turning up in pounds. Do the right thing while you have the chance. And if shes not a show/breeding bitch then desexing her immediately is an option too. No more seasons, silent or not.
  2. Dont worry guys, have found one Woofpurrnay will do it in narre warren
  3. Hi guys, Need some help! Does anyone know of a clinic open on a Sunday that would do a prog test for me? I had one on friday and am booked in on monday with my vet who isnt open sundays, but I'm beginning to think perhaps that too long to wait. My last result was in the range of imminent ovulation but she has been taking her time. Looking in the melbourne/melbourne south east area. But I'm happy to travel to put my mind at ease Cheers
  4. Welcome to Dogzonline Jazzygirl I hope you enjoy yourself here and learn as much as you can! Goodluck with your puppies
  5. Have a look on petrescue website. There may be something suitable there. I put in my vote for a pointer though. Their temperament is ideal for a young family. They are loving and gentle and all they need is a quick rub down weekly as far as grooming goes. And being a short hair dog theres no stress about burrs or any other nasties getting stuck in their coat every time the family goes bush walking. Fabulous dogs! (but I am a bit bias! LOL)

  7. try frozen puppies They can do it all for you, or you can do part of the leg work. Depends on if its chilled or frozen too.
  8. Theres one in Narre warren, at the berwick obedience club. Off of Fox road. Great spot with 2 areas fully fenced and with generally friendly people and dogs. You have to ask to enter the areas
  9. SBT123, I agree with you. I've always gone by the opinion that dogs are carnivores (theres been some discussion that they are omnivores but I look at my dogs dentition which screams carnivore to me . They should be fed accordingly. I'd like to see dogs ancestors eating rice! Or bran! Gee wizz... Sure they might pick up a few bits and pieces in their travels, but basing their whole diet on rice/bran cereals in general is not my idea of good nutrition. Sorry! I would be feeding something at a minimum of a meat based product (look on the back of pack) then whenever you can afford up for there. Yep I know that zillions of dogs have whelped without quality food, but that doesnt mean if you want to do the right thing you shouldnt... But then you will find lots of different opinions here on the forum I hope that you are pregnant! Goodluck with your upcoming babies
  10. Oh dear darls. I'd suggest the black weed matting, or that green stuff that is also like $5m from bunnings? I used that doubled up to block of our fence off the side stop our dogs gazing out into the yard and barking if anyone went past. Well that was a preventative action. Know what you mean about weird neighbours. A few houses ago we had some strange kids next door who used to get up onto the back fence sit there, and throw stones at my dogs!!!!! I didnt know what they were doing for a while to set the dogs off so much til I caught them in the act. Then I went outside and said, now would you like it if I sat on the fence and threw stones at YOU?? Anyway they got a bit frightened I think after I caught them and never bothered our dogs again... I think sometimes parents dont know what they're kids are up to! Goodluck pointees!
  11. Hi I've rented in 3 different homes with dogs. Never have we had an issue getting a home and often had quite a few to choose from! We found that writing down a resume about you and your dog is very helpful and actually often plays to your advantage as the owners understand how dedicated you are to your canine friend. Include things like showing, obedience, etc etc. I also stated that I was very fussy about cleaning after them and that all droppings were disposed of quickly ie no poo lying round the yard!! Saying things about vaccinating, desexing, worming and defleaing all helps. Even though I've never had to do it I also said that we were willing to pay a "doggie bond". I think this also gives them peace of mind that you really are serious about dog ownership and would never want anything to happen to the home. Be warned, some agents will ask you to sign that the dog is only to be kept outdoors. If you choose to do this anyway thats fine, but we do keep ours inside, so this clause was a pain. In the end we sorted it out with the owners who I dont think knew that the agents wanted the dogs outside! I think it was a standard thing that the agents had us sign without the real consultation with the owners? Anyhow if I were you I would just be plain and clear and say you would like to get a dog and would the owners be ok with it. BTW every rental we have had did not say they were pet friendly!!!! They had nothing mentioned about pets. Remember, they would rather take in someone with a couple of spoilt dogs than someone with less desirable qualities!
  12. Hi just want to share my experiences! We're just renovating a smallish house (only 10.5 squares) and have polished the tassie oak floorboards just over oh about 2 months ago. They are VERY scratched already!!! We have 3 dogs also predominantly indoors, and wherever they are, there are scratches! I told the man who polished that we would have dogs and he said there is nothing you can do. Just suck it up and live with it. We went with a matt finish as this shows the scratches and dust less, but you can still see them! Especially around the back door where they go in and out. I would never ever ever ever (!! LOL) recommend floorboards to those people who have dogs. Particularly in areas of high traffic, or simply where the doggies are. The scratches are awful and dont look nice. And I'm not really fussy. But still its like 2k to do it, and I've never do it again! At our own built home we will definitely be putting in tiles. These are far more hard wearing, easy to clean and maintain. I may put the floodboards in the bedrooms, but definitely never in lounge or doggie friendly areas. The good thing about the floorboards is yes they are way easier to clean, but once scratched, theres not much you can do. Goodluck!
  13. You could try longer walks in the morning, with some games included. I think the best idea is keeping them indoors. What about setting up a doggie door so they can go in and out? Alternatively look into puppy day care?? Or even someone to come by during the day to walk them so that it breaks up their day.
  14. Pointers do tick all boxes i think (long time pointer owner here BUT they do shed!!!! A lot! They shed all year round, and with 4 indoors atm I'm vacuuming everyday. If you like, pop by and visit the pointer crew on the 6th at kcc. I'll be there with 3 of mine then A black/white Liver/white and new girl Orange/white. Lovely temperaments, EXCELLENT family dogs, have a warning bark when people come to the door, they are wash and drip dry (no grooming really at all! Otehr than checking ears and claws weekly if you want a quick rub down with a brush) and they are good with recall as long as you take the time to train. Goodluck in your search, I hope you find something you fall in love with!
  15. Thanks for the info guys I just rang woofpurrnaj (they're just down the road from me) and they do US charging $88. I think perhaps the short drive there will do it for me! Thanks again guys ;)
  16. Frankston would be good too. Sorry dumb question where is karingal? I'm not originally from melb so am still trying to navigate! I dont mind knowing how many thats not really my main thing just need to know so that i can adjust feeding etc etc. Her teats look more rponouced atm, but thats probably nothing as shes always a little more pronounced after seasons. Shes 2 weeks atm. Thanks for the help guys
  17. Hi all, Just have a quick query, where is a US operator in SE Melbourne? My vet doesnt do it, and all I want to know if my girls accidental mating has taken (quite late day 17). Just want to make plans for everything and knowing as early as possible would be great. I could wait to do a relaxin test, but I think US can confirm pregnancy a little earlier. Seems the dogs took matters into their own hands as I was planning the litter for later next year. Doesnt really matter either way, but would like to know if she is, or isnt! Cheers guys
  18. What is my relationship with the breed? (ie breeder, first time owner etc) Owner, exhibitor and breeder. How common is it in Australia? Sadly, not common enough! They are so well suited to our warmer climate, and need such a minimal amount of grooming. I feel however their popularity is growing as they become more recognised for their wonderful family pet potential. What is the average lifespan? Approx 12 years. What is the general temperament/personality? Happy and friendly dogs who love human contact. When in the home they are most happy to be around their human campanions either at their feet or on the couch! They are eager to please. They should never be agressive nor overly timid. They will bark an alarm at the door if there is a stranger. If you own more than one, you might find that if giving one a pat, the other will also push its way in and want its own share of the pats! They can be a little attention seeking comming over to you and making it obvious they want pats. They get along well with dogs and people outside of the home. A pointer does not need a heavy hand for training. On the whole a generally happy and easy going breed. How much daily exercise is needed for the average adult? Pointers really need to be exercised on a daily basis. Our dogs are exercised for 1&1/2 hours in the morning and get a short run in the evenings of around 30 minutes. This fits into out lifestyle best. Idealy they must get at least 1 hours of free off the lead running daily. They are most happy when exercised daily and are much better behaved dogs. Is it a breed that a first time dog owner could easily cope with? Yes. If you are dedicated to their exercise and can give them the love and attention they crave pointers are a dog that a first time owner can have. Your breeder will be able to discuss your home situation and choose the right pup to suit your needs, remembering that each pup is different, some being more excitable and some more placid and easy going. Can solo dogs of this breed easily occupy themselves for long periods? This depends a lot on the personality of your pointer. Some will be happy to occupy themseves for long periods of time (chewing bones or toys etc) esspecially if given the correct amount of exercise and stimulation a pointer needs. However some when bored they can become destructive, barking, digging or chewing. They are most happy when they are with their human companion. How much grooming is required? Pointers are extreemly low maintenence. Just a wash and dry every so often and cutting any long claws. We also recomend checking your pointers ears on a weekly basis and cleaning when nessesary as being a droopy eared breed ear infections can occur and are very uncomfortable for the poor dog involved. Is it too boisterous for very small children or for infirm people (unless the dog is well trained)? This really depends on the dog. As youngsters pointers can be a little too bouncy and knock small children or the elderly over, simply because of their sheer size. Unless trained as a youngster they are prone to jumping on people so it is essential that they are taught not to jump. Our adult dogs do very well with children, on the whole seeming to understand not to be too rough. Are there any common hereditary problems a puppy buyer should be aware of? As discussed earlier there ae a few problems which do crop up from time to time in pointers including dwarfism, epilepsy, thyroid and pancreatic issues. Other issues not discussed are skin problems. When buying a puppy, what are the things you should ask of the breeder? (eg what health tests have been done (if applicable) and what is an acceptable result to those tests so the buyer has an idea of what the result should be) Ask firstly if they are a registered breeder. Ask of the dogs have been vaccinated and vet checked (and microchipped if applicable). Ask to view the mother of the litter and if possible the father. Pointers are never to be agressive or overly fearful. Some will be more excitable to meet you than others which may hang back and take you in before wanting to meet you, these are all perfectly acceptable pointer personalities.
