  1. You are lucky. My dogs wake up at 5 am and are ready for their walk! Even on weekends!!!
  2. There is a logical flaw in your reasoning. Those who 'gush' over their dogs (and I proudly say that I do) don't necessarily humanise them. It is possible to really love dogs as dogs!!! And they can be a person's best mate 'as a dog'.
  3. Unfortunately,, if I let my sleeping beauty lie, she wakes me up at 2am to tell me she's wee'd and poo'd in the house - so last night wee's are a necessity. So true. If I don't wake up my sleeping dogs they won't do anything inside but will continue to scratch and bark at the door in the middle of the night till I let them out!!
  4. My golden lives with my Norwegian Elkhound. They are the best of friends, play with each other like crazy and have never had a fight. I found that while elkhounds and goldens have very different temperaments, they complement each other well.
  5. While looking for boarding options for my dogs, I was wondering if we could have a pinned topic on DOLer recommendations on dog boarding. I found some really good recommendations (unfortunately they were booked out) through posts that were often a year old.
  6. Hi, I visited Hanrob where I have booked my dogs between 21 Dec-3 Jan. But I'm not very happy with their luxury suites. So I am looking at other options, one of which is a pet sitter who could stay at my place during this time. I'm in Sydney's upper north shore and have two dogs who need to stay inside. Does anyone have any recommendations and rates? PM me for more details about my dogs. Thanks.
  7. Of course it is worth reporting. This wasn't a chance occurance. These dogs didn't 'startle' the victims. These dogs were intent on attacking. If a leashed dog gets startled, the owner can still control it. But these four dogs were attacking and are directly responsible for the death of the dog. If it was a pack of 4 goldens that attacked this aggressively, I'm sure that would be reported as well.
  8. The kid asked for a puppy, and the kids friend had one so that's what they got. The kid's happy, so really that's all that matters! Agree Minimax. Just because people ask for suggestions doesn't mean they can't decide for themselves. These forums are a sounding board for ideas. Thowra, your puppy is very cute. I'm glad your son is happy.
  9. Thanks Clyde. I checked Kelston but there wasn't much information available online and I had to make the booking asap. May be next time. I have now booked my dogs into the Hanrob Boarding Kennel at Heathcote, in one of their luxury suites. There was only one available so I decided to put in a deposit and book it since I and my OH have to travel overseas in Dec. I am going there this weekend to have a look and if I don't like it I have the option of cancelling it. Has anyone else used it? Any feedback?
  10. My dogs love fruits in general though they never get the core or berries/grapes etc. They love apples, bananas, mangos and watermelon.
  11. I am trying to book my dogs into a kennel from 21 Dec to 3 Jan. Terrigal pet resort is booked out. I called Acacia. they don't have any place either. Can anyone suggest anything else in the Sydney area? I am specifically looking for: Airconditioning No sharing with other dogs No play time with other dogs, but instead walks and play time with the two of them together
  12. I went to their website and it sounds like they let a number of dogs out together. Can you specify if you don't want your dogs to interact with other dogs? I'll never feel comfortable letting someone else decide which dogs my dogs could play with.
  13. How big are the kennels? They look quite small in the photos on their website. Has anyone boarded medium/large dogs there? I use Terrigal pet resort since their suites have rooms the size of a medium sized bedroom (including an actual bed) with their own grassy yard.
  14. Lovely photos. Here's wishing them both a speedy recovery and hope they come home soon.
  15. I use the Terrigal Pet Resort. I wouldn't board my dogs anywhere else.
  16. I agree with you. I think part of the problem is also how dogs are socialised. We have so many restrictions on dogs these days that there isn't enough opportunity to give them a lot of exposure. Assuming that there is no serious genetic predisposition to aggression, a puppy that has grown up with lots of kids, animals will be less likely to react than a dog who has never been with a kid before. Also, while I do agree that all dogs can bite, few dogs will show the kind of aggression that led to this girl's death. Most dogs will react if pushed, scared or startled. But that, at the most, would result in a quick nip, not a full on attack.
  17. That's such a scary story Madcat. I'm so glad you managed to keep Frank. He is gorgeous.
  18. No it's not bruised. I checked him thoroughly. It's not sore or itchy either. It's just red but it's lessening now. For the last three days he barely managed to get up and was wheezing through the night on Friday due to the swelling in his throat. He wouldn't even get up to eat. I hand fed some sardines mixed with his medicines but he didn't want to finish that either. But this morning he was excited about his breakfast and went out by himself. So we left home for an hour to buy some stuff. When we got back my OH opened he door and went in while I was getting things from the car. He suddenly said "come quickly"! So I went in and there was white fluff everywhere!!!! My dog was feeling better and had his energy back so had decided to trash his bed. I must say I've never been so happy to see a trashed bed!!!! We were so happy to see him playing.
  19. Thanks coogie. The vet just called back (and I must add that the vets at the Ku Ring Gai Vets are amazing) and said that it is an extension of the allergic reaction and will go down in a day or so.
  20. My elkhound's whole face swelled up Thursday early morning. He was rushed to the vet. They did a full check up including blood and urine samples, ultrasound to see if there is any blockage but all seemed ok. So the vet gave him a cortisone injection and tablets which has now brought the swelling down significantly. They think that he has had a severe allergic reaction to something. So we are getting the whole backyard cleaned. However, this morning we noticed that his whole stomach has turned a deep red colour. We are trying to get an appointment with the vet. But I was wondering if you have seen anything like this before and have any advice on what could be causing it?
  21. Hi Kfittall, While I don't have any story I can share, I strongly feel that Lennox's story needs to be told. Our dogs enrich our lives in so many ways. It is time government and laws stop treating this bond lightly and heartlessly. If making a point took priority over a disabled child's happiness then it is very clear that they don't understand how important pets are.
  22. Here's Odin as a puppy: And here's Odin as a four year old:
  23. My goldy has eaten a whole bag of lentils as well, half a bag of flour, a quarter bag of dog food, and half a packet of icing sugar. Then did a few zoomies!!! Of course when we got home and realised she had figured out how to open the kitchen cupboard, we fixed it and got her to calm down. She just went to sleep. No issues, except a minor stomach upset. That said, I still take all the precautions to prevent bloat. Edited to add she did not eat all of that in one day!!
  24. True. However my dog is extra clean. He tiptoes around dog poo and would not pick up his ball if it rolls into the part of the backyard where my dogs do their poos. Once he peed on his favourite ball by mistake. And didn't touch it till I washed it with soap!! He would never ever roll in dog poo. Which is why I was very surprised by his interest in cow/horse poo!!!
  25. Thanks. That makes sense. However my dogs do get a lot of fruits and veggies. And only one of them has been interested in the poos. Can I do anything to stop this?
