How To Stop A Dog Cocking His Leg On Everything.
Alyosha replied to smooch's topic in General Dog Discussion
You can also try clipping his lead to your belt while he's inside, so that he can't get a sneaky pee in when you're not looking, and you are able to be in constant contact through his early settling in period. -
Wow. It's nice to see the spirit of community alive and well, and including animals.

I have a pup flying from Canberra to Adelaide tomorrow on her own and its about $200 including crate hire.

Unfortunately the judicial system is slow and bogged down in process. Sometimes slow is ok, if it means being careful and thorough so that maximum effect is obtained from the process. Unfortunately we also live in a litigious society and councils don't want to rush into things and give dangerous dog owners the opportunity for counter action as the whole purpose is then defeated.

Corvus's original assertion has been shown, on the basis of evidence and experience, to be flawed - qualifications or not. -

Great news!! Have a lovely and relaxing holiday.

Going through the courts is a long and drawn out process whether the matter is run by the Council or by teh Police. If the council are already investigating the police won't step in. The process will be the same. Most offences for dogs that attack and injure people aren't covered by infringement notices (like your one Rachelle) so going through court is the option.

Why Do Sighthounds Tend To Be Timid/sensitive?
Alyosha replied to corvus's topic in General Dog Discussion
I' jumping back from the love or hate scientists bit here and wondering at the above. This whole thread was started on the basis of survey information on some dogs (mostly greyhounds) being compared to a shyness/boldness axis defined especially for humans, then that information being used to project a result across a varied group of dog breeds. Does this seem completely ridiculous to anyone else here?? Seems like anthropomorphism taken to the extreme. And, you just try and keep my dogs away from a "novel" object!! -

If a new descriptor or "axis" was required, what is wrong with doing some research and reading the breed standards' and extensions' comments regarding temperament of these breeds? Surely that is pretty base level research, and might give a clearer picture of common descriptive terms used for the temperaments of these breeds - sometimes for centuries. But, what would I know of research, being a stroppy dog owner who chucks tantrums when told stuff I don't like. -

Oh, and add to that - then to dismiss our concerns as not being anything to do with proper research, or us not being interested in science, or us just being reactive, then huff off. Real productive. -
Why Do Sighthounds Tend To Be Timid/sensitive?

I don't think that trying in vain to make a point and being paranoid are the same thing. Timidness is a PHYSICAL FAULT in these breeds. If you started a thread asking why all of another group of breeds tended to have some particular physical fault, you would have owners and breeders of those breeds on the defensive. These breeds mean the world to people, some people consider themselves custodians of these breeds into the future. To be asked why our breeds as a collective tend to display a major fault gets our backs up. Can that be any clearer? -

I would've hoped, that dog people, undertaking research into dog behaviour, might be a little progressive and perhaps even challenge some of these pre conceived titles and terms instead of just finding new ways to jam information into the same tired old boxes. -

So as that axis exists, we better make damn sure we find a way to jam these pesky hounds into that box. Otherwise, if they don't fit into the pre determined axis?? Total chaos may well reign... -

Seems more painstaking when you have to make it all up instead of taking in knowledge that's already out there. -
Why Do Sighthounds Tend To Be Timid/sensitive?
Alyosha replied to corvus's topic in General Dog Discussion
Sensitive is not an issue indeed, look at the Borzoi standard where it couples with the word courageous, and a very, very different meaning is conveyed than when it is coupled with the word timid. -

If the thread topic was regrettable to Corvus it would've been edited and not left as it was after it was shown to be incorrect and offensive. -

I think I did do it, and have been kicking myself about that since this thread started. No more surveys for me. -

Getting Flea Products Off Ebay.. Cons?
Alyosha replied to Aztec Gold's topic in General Dog Discussion
If it's a personally imported version of a product otherwise sold here it doesn't comply with the Agvet code, and the APVMA cannot issue consent to import an international version of a product unless there is a demonstrated availability issue in Australia. In that case, each importation would need to be applied for, considered on it's merits and either consented to or not. -

 - meaning - yeah, I'm sure - seeing as the thing was obviously not open to discussion and the idea obviously set in stone. -

Alyosha replied to Aztec Gold's topic in General Dog Discussion
You need to be sure you're not buying an overseas version as some are slightly different, and it's actually not legal to import a product that is available in a registered Australian form. Regardless of price. It's about Australia registering versions of products that are suited to here, safe and effective. -

Is this paper targeting academic circles who have in depth knowledge of the behavioural traits of different breeds? I can't imagine that many would be so easily offendable as owners/breeders, but many these academics are as fanatical about our breeds as we are?
