They may still be deceased, even if only born in the last few years. And if they're male they can still be part of a breeding program (AI) after death...

He's not a sighthound in disguise is he?? Seriously though, this is a normal reaction in a sighthound. I don't know if it will help at all, but the best way to train them is often subtley different to many other dog temperaments. Much more team oriented - ie. when you ask them to do something, they will immediately ask you "what's in it for me?". It's not dominance so much as independent thought. Which if you can get working for you, can be amazing. Like CW EW said, what is he working for? They will work to please you, but maybe not just for a treat, reward phrase or pat on the head like some will. He might be looking for a deeper connection with you perhaps? And yes, sighthounds also need some consequence, especially as they are very pack oriented and usually enjoy constructive leadership.

Warm Dog Beds With No Filling/stuffing
Alyosha replied to Rileys mum's topic in General Dog Discussion
I'm with Juice - if he's short coated - hay or straw can be a beautifully warm bed. -
I was just coming in to DOL to write the very same thing Keshwar!! We only went one day and were kicking ourselves that we didn't do both days and camp. Lovely spot, lovely show and great atmosphere. Thanks to all involved - we'll be sure and enter both days next year!!

Georgia USA: Warning on graphic and upsetting photos and video attached to article - not on front page, must be opened seperately. http://www.examiner.com/dogs-in-national/heartbreak-at-loonie-farms-as-horror-of-death-uncovered?fb_comment=33357641 "Long County, GA - Investigators have uncovered a horrific situation at Loonie Farms Animal Rescue near Ludowici. The rescue, once housing numerous unwanted animals, is now a quiet, gruesome graveyard. The rescue, located on a sprawling, 10 acre farm, is owned by James and Christiane Judd - but today, Christiane is nowhere to be found - apparently on the run. Her husband, James, has been locked up behind bars for months - serving time for dealing stolen property. Last Sunday, Christiane phoned Kim Hankerson and asked her to care for the animals at the farm - telling Hankerson that she was leaving town. But Hankerson didn't find animals in need of care - the animals at the farm needed care months ago - by the time she arrived, there was nothing but death. Bones were discovered piled in wheelbarrows, dead puppies were found locked inside of crates...with every turn, more death - more heartache. Late last summer, the Loonie Farms Facebook page promoted the property as a beautiful sanctuary for unwanted animals. Photo after photo showing what seemed to be an idyllic life. What went wrong? How did Judd go from the business of saving lives to this? How could this "rescue" be listed as a reputable rescue organization by the Georgia Department of Agriculture? There are those who believe that Judd was in it for the money - going so far as to suggest that she purposefully killed the animals in order to pocket donated funds. Not long ago, Georgia Animal Haven, a no-kill rescue, was forced to shut down. Tragically, 35 dogs went to the Loonie Farms rescue - initially, it appeared to be a blessing....now the tragic realization that it was truly a nightmare. Debbie Lanier, former owner of the Georgia Animal Haven, is convinced that the dogs she turned over to Judd are among the many who are dead on the property - needless to say, she is devastated. Now, deputies are searching for the missing woman behind these horrifying deaths, while rescuers attempt to clean up the sad mess that was left behind. Anyone that has seen Christiane Judd is asked to contact the Sheriff: 6 East Academy Street, Ludowici, GA 31316 (912) 545-2118 Please circulate this story with Christiane Judd's photo (included in slideshow to the left of the article) - she must not be allowed to set up another "rescue" operation elsewhere - together, everyone must stand together to protect the innocent...the animals that rely upon others for their very life. Thank you."

Oh Ausvarg I'm sorry. You might try the rescue forum. Often rescue groups have tiny pups come into care that need fostering.

I know a couple with a pair of pet Cavs and one has been diagnosed and displays outward signs of it. I think it's fairly common.

Sorry Staranais. On thinking, maybe not a Malinois - they can be intense. But all the Groens and Tervs I've known as family dogs (and our Groen we had long ago) have been awesome with little kids, other dogs and pets/livestock. Or a Dobe? eta - spelling

Belgian shepherd - any variety. Ticks all your boxes. Beautiful, beautiful dogs.

Sorry, just two more (I promise!! :D) This is Gabe, love the skateboard and rocking horse tricks!! Such a gorgeous athletic boy. And this. Not many words for this one. Beautiful, but so sad. Have tissues on hand. A lady diagnosed with terminal cancer, with her most lovely Chinese Crested, doing their last run together at a trial. Amazing skill, and a beautiful bond between them.

Can hardly believe we haven't had the dog that thinks it's own back leg is trying to steal the bone it's eating... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJgMueh-zLM

Sorry, but I have to disagree, and actually find that comment a little offensive. When the breed/s that you particularly love have certain basic personality traits, then that is often what you love most about your dogs. If you take on a dog from a different breed that is a completely different animal to live with, you may not bond with it, you may not even like it. If true dog lovers were happy to bond with any and every dog there would be few if any pure breeds because people would not strive to fix certain types and temperaments that are most admirable within a breed. Plus, sometimes certain people and dogs do not bond, just like some people never get along. They should not be made to feel that they are doing sometime wrong, that they are not a "true dog lover".

I would presume you would consider responsibilty like you wouuld if you handed your bitch over to a vet clinic - you'd have to trust in teh professional knowledge and extpertise of the service, and the service would need good insurance for when situations went badly. I wouldn't use one habitually, having few dogs and them being very close with the family. But can see it being very valuable service to have available in certain instances like a sudden emergency that called family away from home at crucial whelping times etc

I've looked at similar options and it's very hard to decide on a course of action! After much deliberation and research I decided frozen would be best, considering the difficulty of timing my travel with the girl, with time off work, and exact peak season etc. A big consideration is the potential for stress effecting the bitch's season as well. I have had a similar situation as you in other ways too, with an older male that may not be so suited to interstate travel as a youngster - so possibly negating the option of the dog travelling to the bitch. I did consider chilled semen but the timing can be hard with long interstate flights, and it is so easy to blow everything on a simple delay that's outside of your control.

Roof Racks/baskets On Trailers - What's Your Set Up?
Alyosha replied to Alyosha's topic in General Dog Discussion
Ish that is fantastic! Exactly what I was thinking of, and was trying to explain, with little success, to our local mechanic. -
Hey All, I'm wanting to put some roof racks and maybe a basket on my trailer, but am hoping to check out how some others have done it before I commit to buying anything. My local mechanic is great and will install them for me, but I'm worried about getting the height right so they clear the whirlybirds etc. Has anyone got a description or pic of theirs that I can have a look at?
