  1. As Huski asked! Which one? I've got the southside trial next month marked as a potential for our UD debut but will decide at the last possible minute (as I'm the trial secretary it shouldn't be hard to slot myself in somewhere ). At this stage it depends on fixing her seekback and also depends on when she comes in season. I am getting scared just thinking about my first trial and I'm not even certain when it will be at this stage!!! We are doing Oxley next month - sweepstakes in the morning with Coco. This is for me as I am so uptight about the first time that I need to do one that doesnt count if you know what I mean. And I know the judge and will be pretty relaxed (or comatose with nerves) :D . Will do the trial after the sweepie with Pip in Open as she deserves a chance at her title. Was thinking about entering southside as well which is the week after but might just do Open with both of them to relax and hit the UD ring again in July. Too scary to think about now.
  2. Okay big breath.................... I have sent off our first UD entry this morning.. Feeling a little sick right now but trying to be brave
  3. Last trials for the year are usually end of November, First for the year are in January. Are you planning another trip this way Ptolomy? Maybe for next years Nationals in July
  4. Almost forgot have trialed in SA, Vic, NSW and Qld and they all have their different ways. At least we dont have to deal with snow/sleet up in sunny Qld and summer trials are usually night ones for the cooler weather.
  5. That's right, I wonder whether I'll get any comments from judges about my decision not to use the mat! The head of obedience here in QLD is one of those who thinks you've got a screw loose if you don't use the mat! I'll find out soon I guess! You and me both Seita cause we work without the mat. Seen too many dogs over the years fixate on the mat and miss an article they have kicked over the edge. Not that I've actually done this myself before but you get the idea.
  6. Congratulations everyone. Keep up the good work.
  7. Am ecstatic right now. We have been having problems with the scent discrim - my once super confident girl had gone all hesitant and uncertain. For the life of me I do not know why anyway took her back to basics. Sessions inside on the lounge room floor only one type of article high repitition, huge reward when she got it right. Took it outside again this afternoon and my super confident, happy girl was back. Still high reward in between types of articles but she did it. Perhaps a lesson for me in giving her easy to do sometimes. Still think I dont know what I am doing though
  8. Nearly all new exercises are taught inside in the kitchen - dont ask me why. When more distance is required the family room comes into it. The only thing not practiced is jumping. Cant understand why other half draws the line at full jumps set up inside Once taught then polish.
  9. Huski dont stress. That particular class is fairly obviously still working on methods from when Noah was a boy. You are training Daisy in an enlightened way that is from what I saw at the photo shoot the other day working wonders. So in my humble opinion keep on keeping on.
  10. We use Find - Seekback Bring - Articles One, Two or Three - Gloves (strange but it works) Over - DJ Wait - get ready you need to be doing something in a tick Stay - Move and I will decapitate you Hand signals pretty basic - point downwards to ground for seekback, karate chop pointing outwards for retrieves and fingers spread palm inwards to dogs nose for articles. I'm a strange little puppy. Edit to add signals
  11. Seita - We will let you read the book Deb and I have written called 101 ways to fail directed jumping Just wait until you bring a judge into the equation it changes everything The story for most going into UD - your first trial you know your dog can do everything so although you are scared you have put all the work in you need. Things go well for the first couple of exercises - there are a couple of minor hiccups - but you are still on a pass. You get to the signals exercise and your heart starts beating extra fast - only 2 more to get through + stays and you will get your first pass. Signals and they miss a position - hmm not done that before in a trial. Judge tells you to leave the dog - which you do you about turn and you give the signal for the down - the dog hesitates but does go down. You give the sit signal and it is like you have just signaled the Queen Mary to do a U turn, the dog looks at you like it has never seen that signal in its entire life - and there ends your first UD experience...... so close and yet so far. Thanks for this top tip am terrified enough allready. If I manage somehow not to get straight zeros then I will be ecstatic. Dont forget the cocomonster is working with a huge handicap - me
  12. Was hoping for May then June. Now it looks like July. Have the GSP national in August so fingers crossed we run out of things to break
  13. Why when you think you have fixed one UD exercise another one breaks? Fixed our issue with gloves and now her scent discrim is wobbly. Her articles have been fool proof for months and now we are acting uncertain on some. Enough to have me pulling my hair out.
  14. All paid.. Am counting the days. Its still going to be delivered to you isnt it smisch?
  15. Thanks Rocco for your patience with my supposedly well behaved GSPs. Hope your photo turns out the way you are planning. Am certain it will be award winning stuff..
  16. Okay just let me know when to place the order so it goes with everyone else. Good idea by the way.
  17. Put me down for 2 easter mornings and 2 kool rush please. Let me know bank details when the time comes. Ta
  18. 2 GSPs (5 and 3) and 2 inside Burmese (10 and 8). Cats rule the house you know that expression "iron paw in a velvet glove" that about sums it up. The dogs wont even walk up the hallway if the cat is there and gives them the look.
  19. Thanks guys. Will check out Cartmills.
  20. Like the title guys. Am new to this area and there are two vet clinics handy, Was just wondering if anyone out there prefers one to the other. It is just for standard stuff like vaccs and speying. No breeding etc.
  21. I second this. Fantastic news Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!
  22. As you mentioned retrieving is strong/rewarding, why practice about turns with no reward/glove? Are you placing all three articles in EXACTLY the same position? What is wind direction? Try raising glove one and three on a stick or whatever helps for your dog to focus. Spread the gloves? Try a Noon, 3 o'clock drill, 6 o'clock, 9 o'oclock drill/game (you in the middle). Shorter distance to gloves may help also, as others have indicated? Making one and three impossible to retrieve/non rewarding (depending on dog). Number one question: We..ask..ourselves in retrieving circles, do dogs lie...? When your dog is in EXCELLENT heel position, does she focus on the glove you indicate? Watch the eyes CAREFULLY!! I vocal cue good, when correct and have no hesitation due to training-game history, saying NO. So many questions sorry. Are all the the gloves the same white or fabric? I like the sound of the clock game - that could be something we could try. Would it be okay to replace the glove I am indicating with a ball or dummy so that when she goes to the correct position(future glove) she gets instant strong reward? A bit like the food/target plate people talk about on here. I am thinking this may aid in training that locking in process. She can be told no in a retrieve pulled off whatever it is with to date no ill effects. The gloves are all identical. She appears to be focussed on the correct glove but halfway out will veer off to the glove in number two position. Really want to conquer this as I think we would be hopeless at food refusal. Edit to add have booked in for a lesson next week with an experienced trainer to pull us apart and hopefully put us back togethor again so that we are functioning properly.
