I'm adding two lots of photos. My camera (I got it yesterday) can add three photos together, as you take them... If its on a certain setting. Its awesome, for $279, I'm happy. Anyway, here are 'two' taken today on our dog walk. This is in our 'offlead' area. Day 4: -

Day 1: My new rabbit that I bought yesterday. Her name is Flick. Will be going camera shopping in the afternoon. Fingers crossed for a better camera. -
Heres what you see daily at my house.

For some breeds, I suppose it would be down to climate. Those dogs with LONG and THICK coats wouldn't do to well in the heat, some Border collies as it is aren't too good, sae with my two pointer girls. With that said, my two girls, although they are gundogs for crying out load, don't like wet grass, but will happily go swimming in a dirty creek or the beach. It would also come down to what the owners are willing to do with the dog when its a pup and at that learning age. For example, my malt cross is now 3 years old, he was the only dog until he was a year old... He grew up with our rabbits running around the backyard and due to this he would sit outside with them and eat the grass. Our first cat grew up with the rabbits when she was a kitten, and sits there with them at the age of 5 years old and eats the grass. Stupid cat. If I was a breeder, I would want to ensure all the dogs/bitches I have have the abilities to do what they are meant to do, and I wouldn't use a stud dog if it didn't know. I'm sure a lot of the people responding on this are breeders, so here is a question. As breeders, your meant to be going to the breed standard, yes? Not just in conformation, but everything about the dog. So basically, preserving the natural abilities of the breed (hunting, herding, being a couch potatoe, etc) should be looked into for the bloodline, and not just if it comes from a well developed bloodline, or a well known breeder?
-
Lol, yeah. They aren't the smartest when it comes to stalking on an oval. That is awesome to win a class at a royal because your pupp had natural hunting abilities. There is no point to breeding something that doesn't do what its meant to do. Your breeding out what it is meant to do... Its like, a Pointer who can't Point, a BC who can't work sheep and run all day, and a Malt cross who can't keep your feet warm.
-
Hey Carlibud, I should have mentioned, mine don't just point. But they do what they are bred for, the will point out game, look around for somewhere to hide, and run under the trees (The trees in our yard follow the fence line) and basically come out of nowhere and catch these birds. It is amazing to see, and they work as a team, one comes from one direction and the other comes from another direction. Or if they are on the oval, they will quietly crawl up to the birds. Its funny to watch a Pointer with its belly on the ground walking across an oval, considering how green the grass is and how white my dogs are. But they catch them!
-
I have two pointers, and although they don't go out with their master and point things out for myself to shot, they do go out and hunt all they want. They catch birds and rabbits, and the birds that fly into our backyard. So I guess, if given the chance they would be able to do what they were originally bred for.

I like that question Mim. I know it all comes down to the individual dog, but how are these guys in a family home? Would you say they are better for a same, a single person or a couple? How do you think this breed would go with Pointers? In my house, its my mother, my younger brother, younger sister, myself, my uncle and my boyfriend (he's over every weekend), I am the main carer for the dogs - I walk them, feed them, play with them, bath them, etc, etc, etc, I do it all - would you say a Leonberger would find myself as the 'pack leader' or would it rather spend time with my boyfriend, or another family member as it may get attacted to them instead? Sorry if that question is all over the place.

Forgot she was a bit smaller- its all that fluff!!

Oh, that is gorgeous! Greyhounds are so calm and collected, I used to love working with them! Well, things have gone again with my girl, nothing is going through her head now. She almost took my fingers off when jumping up for a treat. The wall thing isn't working... Maybe I will give her a week or so and then try again. Thanks for your help guys.

Oh god, lol, don't say that! The other two dogs were so easy to teach. Oh well, we'll be practising 10 minutes or so 2-3 times a day so fingers crossed we can get it done.

We don't have ticks in Vic, unless they come down on dogs from other states. I've come a crosss a few ticks before... Not a lot of fun. From the sounds of it, it is a tick though..

Thanks Poodlefan. ;) Thanks everyone for your help and tips, will keep working on it with her.
-
Thanks for the tips guys, the wall thing seems to work a bit, and when I catch her sitting I am throwing a treat to her after saying sit, so fingers crossed she soon 'gets it'. ;)
-
Thanks guys for your help. Will give the wall idea a try tomorrow! And the 'drop' Fingers crossed she will do it. SkySoaringMagpie, I do all my home training one on one, and when I feel they are ready, we give it a go infront of my other dogs, and then we go to classes.
-
Yeah, she's a Champ. All she knows is to stack- which is no help. She does sit on her own, but when I go to reward her (move near here) she thinks its play time and starts bouncy around me in circles, and comes over for cuddles. :D When I'm not near or, or watching the dogs from the backdoor, she happily runs around, sits there, sunbakes, etc.

This is a great idea for a thread!! Here are some

I have taught my Pointer to sit, drop, stay, stand, beg, spin, bed (she goes and lays on her bed), fetch, hunt, recall, in (walks into her crate), wait (she waits until I say she can come out of the crate in my room or the crate in the car) and leave (leaves a toy or food or bird when I say 'leave'.. I have taught my malt cross to sit, drop, stay, up, wait, and army... I just can't get this other Pointer I am looking after to sit. I have used the other two dogs to show her what to do, I have held the food above her head and moved it backwards (she think she needs to jump around or walk backwards with it), I have pushed her rear-end to the ground and praised her. Any tips? Every single time she looks at me dumbly I love her to bits, she so sweet and lovely, and plays lovely with my other dogs, but I just finger for the vets and around really young kids, it would be better if she knew sit. She's a 3 year old Pointer if that helps. I've taught her wait, it only took her about 24 hours to learn that, and she's a dream at it along with the other Pointer, but this whole sit thing is a problem. Thanks!!
