  1. Following on from another thread so as not to hijack. Our neighbour regularly lets off fireworks (illegal in NSW) during parties. We don’t give two hoots about the music and party noise, but figure it would be great to at least have an idea of fireworks going off at some stage to get our dogs and horses sorted beforehand and be prepared. That’s what we all do around here, let each other know. The fireworks go off at least every 2 or three weeks. These people are very new to the area and really have no idea, either that or they just don’t care at all. Their dogs are always wandering on our property and causing trouble. People around here have very expensive horses and lots of other companion animals. Dogs run when they here fireworks (I can hear them all barking and going off) Horses are happily feeding or resting and all of a sudden all of that changes in a moment with no warning. We risk our horses running into fences and at the very least to become very unsettled. It can take quite some time to settle them all down, then more fireworks go off. I (and our other neighbours) have called the police to no avail. We have called council as well. The police tell us to call council, council tell us to call the police. In regard to their roaming dogs we have offered/suggested to go halves in the outside fencing on the boundary fence (dog proof) they refuse. We have had other dogs from neighbouring properties get out and come here, though we are all happy to work together to solve the problem and have replaced fencing (even though it is not our problem, our dogs are all safe in our house yard) Dog proof and hotwired at the top just in case. Any experience or opinions that will see us through this mess? Council have been contacted in regard to the fireworks as well as the police.
  2. I some how manage to hold it together at the time of pts. Mostly so that I can show the dog that everything will be ok, this is good, they trust us so much. I fall in a heap afterwards & am sure it takes years off my life each & every time.
  3. I know... They are good dogs really, I can see that. Our horses are very good with dogs, though still, it is an accident waiting to happen. We have no other choice than to get council involved now as we have tried every other option with our neighbours. It is not just chasing the horses, they also stir up our dogs and I dont want a barking complaint. Bad all round really.
  4. Way off topic I know Though my neighbours always let off fireworks randomly and with no notice. You can hear every dog in the area going off their nuts. Luckily mine are always inside with us as it is always late. We live in a rural area, everyone around here will let you know if they are having a big party, letting off fireworks or burning off etc. But not these people, they do what they want, when they want and have no thought for others at all. Their dogs are always over here (cant get into our house yard) but do chase our two arabs. We have asked them nicely more than once to keep the dogs off our property, though no luck at all
  5. I do this already have seen/heard of too many chips moving/stop working and coming out even years after implant. This is so true. Chips do at times move around, come out or stop working. Ours are all collar free as well. Years ago we were having Christmas Eve at my parents, I took the dogs out for a wee & sniff etc. Our Kelpie Bella's tag got stuck in the back door mat (wooden bath mat) she spun around and around in moments. I hate to think what would have happened if I was not there. Ours are always inside or crated when I am not home so I know they are safe. It is not just collars, people leaving gates open etc, etc also because of snakes etc. I wish I didnt worry so much though I love them all so!
  6. Oh Cathy, I am so very sorry for the loss of your precious and funny boy Mack. What a special boy he is, what you have shared together and given each other will be with you both forever. To have been nurtured and loved so deeply by you and your pack is truley beautiful and profound. You have given Mack the most incredible gift. My thoughts are with you, I have lit a candle for you both. Run free gorgeous boy and watch over your Mumma. Nic xxxx
  7. Thank you all so very much for your thoughts and empathy for Mum and Bub. I wanted her to know that people do care and are compassionate which is why I posted for them here. I agree with you all, there is no excuse for such cruelty and neglect. My only solice is that they are free now to run together with no pain or suffering. I will be following up on this case with my Husband and hope and pray the owners will learn from this. They were truly both so beautiful Beautiful, beautiful creatures. Mum was simply inspirational in her efforts to deliver her calf, I will never forget them as long as I live. Nic xxxx
  8. Hi Perse Yes that it what we belive, she would have had a broken pelvis if we pulled the calf and mum was already in great shock and distress. We just wanted it to end for her as they had both suffered so much. The writting was on the wall. There was no life in Mum at all aside from her eyes rolling back into her head and lifeless in body. She did keep trying for us though and my heart breaks for her. I think they probably sqeezed out another few hundred bucks from her and bub after death via the nackery. They pay to pick up dead or ageing livestock around here, pay you as well, for dog food. I see doggers at the sale yards all the time bidding for dog food. .
  9. Thank you all Mum was in such distress, Bub was already long gone. I remain astounded and hurt for them both. The "owners" were reported to the RSPCA by myself & my Husband in an effort to have her shot. They chose to drag out the calf (3) men and then just leave Mum alone in the dark and cold. They only shot her after an emergency report by me to the RSPCA. I can’t believe she suffered for so long, it would have been days. We so wanted to assist and get Mum through, though dragging a calf out so pinned against mums pelvis in full rigor mortise is....I have no words. I have been informed RSPCA already have a longstanding relationship with these people. I have only just found that out after following up with RSPCA after the events. Just so very sad and so very inhumane It is not rocket science, it is very basic common sense and very basic animal welfare
  10. Beautiful, magnificent, huge girl and your darling bub. I had never met you before last night and eventually you were set free to run with your calf over the bridge. God you both went through hell. I would like to let you know that I truly cared for you both in your stuggle for life. I admire your strength and motherly instincts, I am so very proud of you. I will not ever forget how hard you tried and how patient you were and am devastated that you were so badly let down by your owners. I have a candle lit for you both and beautiful pink roses. I dont have a photo of you both though I have found one that looks just like you and Michael, so will add that as well. Run free babes I will meet you on the other side. Nic xxxxxxxxxxxxx
  11. OMG snakes give me the willies for some reason. I could be wrong, though I thought right after the lawns were mowed on the weekend (we have two acres of house yard) would be a good time to let the dogs run wild (still supervised of course) I figure the noisy ride on would put snakes off for a bit and the lawns are really short so I can spot a snake easily. Tricky time of year regardless
  12. What fantastic programs! Congratulations RSPCA and Pacers This type of support is so important and for me inspirational as it is keeping people and much loved pets together I must look into the Hawkesbury...we have a number of homeless people who have their dogs with them, might ask the soup kitchen in Windsor if they offer this sort of help and support.
  13. Fantastic story! Thanks for sharing. Sausage is a character thats for sure and obviously much loved
  14. Souff is wary of men with red hair, and snakes. Horrible things, both of them. Have nasty memories of both and will cross the street not to be anywhere near them. Toads also are in Souff's bad books ... there is just no need to have those ugly things so cant we just nuke them all? I spose there will always be things that I don't like and things that I do like. I don't like those cars that look like they were made in the 1940s but had a revival here a few years ago - people paid big money for them I hear, but I think they are just plain ugly. Cant nuke them too I suppose? Souff is not really wary of any dog breed. Am more wary of some of the owners really, and very wary of people who give breeds a bad name. Souff
  15. Hi Snake Catcher A little off topic I know though I am having problems with big lizards atm. My dogs are fine and I can recall them though one of my new fosters is a shocker. The other day we had a huge bluey, he has lived here for years. He came out on a hot day, luckily I was there and recalled the dogs/grabbed Kye. I waited for him to move away and kept the dogs away from there for the rest of the day. Sadly he reappeared two days later out the back and Kye got to him. I called wires and took him to the vet though sadly he had to be pts. I was really upset as this has happened before. Should I be trying to relocate lizards away from our property to help them? They seem to keep coming back for some reason?
  16. Hey Raz you are spot on re the flag protocol. Makes it even worse that the PM is attached to the story.
  17. Quote; 'Stand back from this a minute - how you feel is how I feel but that wont win any battles. We need plans which entail gathering the science to back up what we think and real facts and data and we have to stop fighting with what we feel because obviously plenty of people dont feel the same way and feelings dont count when you go into to fight a war.' I know.....it is so bloody frustrating!! Fancy the PM getting a DD and its breeders being plastered all over the place.
  18. Why is it that our PM buying a DD is a big failure for Oscars law in particular? It is a slap in the face for registered breeders and rescue. It also highlights the scale of the DD problem. I would say more so for Oscars Law - this is one of the farms they have targeted and written about as examples of what they are fighting. Sorry Steve I disagree. Register breeders and rescue orgs have been around for a lot longer than Oscars Law. We cant seem to be able to tackle the PF'ing issues either. Why do we expect OL to reslove all the issues overnight? It can take years to close down a hideous and proven inhumane PF even when the RSPCA are involved. I dont expect OL to resolve things over night and the way they are going the only thing they will change is any progress anyone else is making. This is not a proven inhumane puppy farm at all and that is the whole point - apart from the obvious breed issues it is the selection of this particular breeder which is a slap in the face for OL because from what I can see they are the only ones who have said it is inhumane. If they were breaching the codes in VIC, surely the RSPCA and the relevant council would have been onto it by now ? Or is it that they are simply a commericial breeding facility and Oscars Law take exception to that, regardless of them ticking all the boxes in terms of what is spelled out under the current legislation? Is it really a hell hole ? or simply another commercial breeding facility ? I am not so sure about that. I know that some Pf's will not allow access for the RSPCA and stall for as long as they can. Probably gives them time to clean up.... It is not just the offspring people are concerned about, it is also the males and females who spend their days penned up and having litter after litter. What happens to them once they are no longer useful? What is their quality of life?

I guess it is difficult to tell how reputable these breeders are. You certainly cant tell from a glossy website or what they sprout. I wouldnt trust them as far as I could throw them. My concern is that our PM is sending a shocking message to the public who are in desperate need of education in these matters. The point of sale (which is anyone who has the money) is the same and of great concern as it is a contributing factor which leads to dumping or neglect of companion animals. Where do we draw the line?

  22. Personally I dont look towards the US for many things, Horse Transport immediately comes to mind. I hardly call UK and US trailblazers. But if you consider them worthy, good for you that you feel 30 years behind; I have a different world perspective. Well I have no idea why you are not well aware of this fact Lilli, as they are clearly ahead of us (sadly) in most areas. Dont get me started on horse transport and slaughter. I have spent more time with horses than dogs I believe. This is a dog forum though so I will not go there.
  23. It's more complicated than that. Several US states still permit very large, extremely capitalistic puppy farms, some of whom breed AKC registered dogs. They are working to regulate, but recent measures don't go much further than requiring veterinary care, modest standards of care, and not keeping dogs in stacked wire cages with wire bottoms. The level of abuse is clear in that recent advances have outlawed practices such as DIY ceasarian sections and debarking operations. Recent laws in PA only apply to establishments with 50+ dogs. There are other states that forbid selling live animals in petstores and some counties in California have mandatory desexing for all except breeders who have registered (and paid) to keep unaltered animals . . . so it's not uniform. Yes I agree Sundgrubber. We have the same issues with pounds and shelters in Aust, nothing is uniform (even pounds and shelters in the same states). It can be very frustrating. At the recent summit in QLD there were lots of guest speakers from the US and UK who have had great success in lowering euth rates in pounds and shelters. There is some really proactive work being done which is very effective and just basic common sense. Things like working hard in reuniting people with lost pets (before they are impounded) waiving fees or allowing people to add impounding fees to their council rates. There is also a lot of education in the community, desexing family pets is also a priority to prevent unwanted/unplanned litters. Training is also highly promoted and encouraged, some pounds and shelters offer this free of charge. We are very lucky to be able to offer a month of free training for adopted pets at HP. Adopters are always thrilled with the training offer and we heavily promote it. We also offer basic training techniques and tricks when we do an intro with a family and do our best to identify any issues. I agree there are many different aspects to resolving the issue of unwanted animals. I have always said that pounds and shelters can also work very differently to reduce euth rates. Councils can also do a hell of a lot more. Chipping details desperately need an overhaul, perhaps then we can find out where these dogs are coming from. We would also have a better chance of reuniting them with their owners. ETA
  24. Maybe your campaign is stalling so much because you take on overseas issues and try to apply them to aust. I could show you lots of shocking pictures from all over the place to do with lots of things but the relevance to Australia and legislation within Australia is about nought. I clearly stated that the story was from the US Lilli and also stated it was an example. Perhaps you need to read back a bit. We are over 30 years behind the US and UK. So anyone in AUST with any sense or intellegence will sit up and listen to the huge issues they have already faced and are addressing O/S.
