  1. we have a cat who is now 3 legged. she was run over by the fully laden patrol... while just nosing it in to the workshop. it was a leg she had previously broken, and would have been 4k... and more if infection set in. so we opted for amputation. she is not an inside cat she lives in the workshop... and was back out on mice patrol within a month... she is slick now and goes out in the paddocks hunting...
  2. well some might remeber sophie being dumped on woodbyne on here. she came complete with her sister and 2 brothers. they were left in a walk in walk out stable yard.. all dogs were feed together and i presume sohpie had to fight and fight hard to get a feed. money was tight and the people told woodbyne they were loosing every thing, due to finiancial drama and a business going broke. sophie acted like she had never had a feed in her life and was quite light in condition and looked like puppies had been recently weaned... ie large boobies and hippy and ribby. her first vet visit she weighed about 17.5kg... and had gained a bit at that stage. she could eat a feed in about 20seconds, often coughing and choking as she never would chew... she would eat her own poop... often turning before she had finished. you never saw her wee... never. she still poos on concrete. if another dog try to take her food, she will fight to the death. she came chipped which suprised every one... as there is no record of her being bred by an ankc breeder... the older dog dumpped with them, died of breast cancer, and her 2 brothers had to pts due to temp issues. when confronted at the gate she is very serious about killing the person on the other side, but has now gotten to the point of snuggling and seeking you out to get fusses. she is my shadow, when before you could not catch her or even get your hands any where on her. if something should touch her from behind like a piece of bark flicking up and just touching her flanks or rump... she will yelp... like beaten, suck her bum in and in the past wet her self, which i have always though meant as a timid dog she had been wacked. the only behaviour i will explain to strangers is to be understanding about her barking, due to rescue issues, when they come to the house... and giving her time to come to them. that is more for the humans than the dog.... every thing else she is to adhere to the same standards of our other dogs... i expect her to learn... she is harder to teach... but i do expect her to learn. the biggest suprise is she walks on a lead so lightly you never know she is there...better than leo who has no issues and was not truely a rescue...
  3. lets see loo time is not alone time.... according to sophie (who was a rescue and hated humans remember) is snuggle time... where if your not carefully her enthusiastic pushing might just part you from your seat... as she goes over under and round your legs. she has now taken to doing it before you get seated in the morning this can be hard to take aim to sit... oh and she had now worked out its a well! so she looks lovingly at that nice indoor water fall.
  4. The dog had his first shampoo in gosh I can't remember. There is no way he's too chemialised. Frontline was a precaution due to the rabbits they have been chasing, I thought that striking fleas and mange off would be the vets first stop, as we have had mange a few times. Even tho he didn't look dirty boy did some grit come out. The fact the girl dog is mothering the sores makes me think fungal/bacterial. Dals seem to want to stress lick everthing.
  5. lets see frontline won't hurt him. neither will a good bath rather than his morning fall into the dam... but in the mean time the dog is scratching.... my vets away atm... and i am not going to the expensive one as we have already had 3 very expensive trips there recently. i need to wait till pay day any way. in the mean time i wanted to try some stuff first so he does not at best get worse... but thanks for the comparison, it really helped... i'll just take pot luck.
  6. i wanted some advice about shampoos.. there is 2 pages of the stuff here.. http://www.vetnpetdirect.com.au/Products/Medicated-Shampoos-Conditioners the back ground saga! dog has had some skin condition with scabs since winter, in fact he at one stage licked an ulceration on his leg.... he had some other skin dramas, so i frontlined him suspecting mange... wombats and foxes round here.. so not out of the question. it improved after 2 frontlines about 3 weeks apart(was in augustish)... but the leg was still bad. now have gotten leg healed after bandaging. as both dals were licking it... the owner of the leg cause it hurt and the mothering one to make it better. the other skin drama on his head, face and ears is worse. in the begining i blamed rough play.. now not so sure. the new packets of frontline are in the letter box as i type and this morning bathed in triocil. i have been putting some neocourt on it as well... it seems to get better slightly and then flare up. so with all that back ground is there anything else that is different to triocil... or more effective over a broader range of bugs?
  7. i get excited at poo in the yard... never thought i'd say that. sophie used to eat hers... so quickly you had no idea she even pooed. the joys of rescue. now i wish she would poo on the grass not on the concrete... the dramas of a skin infection with 2 dogs habbitually licking the sores... not sure who to put the bowl on... if you put it on the one with sores... the other will lick... if you put it on the one who licks... insert rolly eye man..
  8. for those that complain that farmers shoot no good working dogs... its better than what happens in a good deal of rural towns... which is they are just dumped. not chipped, no rego.. this idea that chipping stops that is bollocks... there is nothing more frustrating that a working dog that won't work or even worse is a huge hinderence on the job... often those sort get a bullet in frustration. my 2 dals are epic fails... sophie who was the dol rescue is terrified to leave the house especially when the horses are around... in 2 years i have not even made a dent in her fear... she cannot even ride on the cart without shaking in fear. leo will run untill he stands on something that hurts... then its all over... he has had cracked paws... on and off since i got him... now he has a chronic hot spot on his leg, which is very sore when you bandage it, just ask him.... so laying on the couch is top priority...he is also terrified of the horses in the paddock but will come out when i drive, but rabbits and that big green troll that pushes him into water against his will(is far more interesting than running)... i have yet to lay eyes on the troll but the dog swears he does not swim or wade on his own. one will bark up a storm when confronted at the gate... and one will follow suit..but when on his own.... he would let you in, then follow you home. no protective instincts in that dal.
  9. i think pet shop throw aways are not just the fault of shops but the sort who throw away a pet do so even if they are from a regoed breeder, they are the sort would not return the dog to the breeder. i have 4 retreads in this house all bred from breeders at some point and thrown away by a throw away owner.... nothing to do with a pet shop...
  10. or buy a second hand ring tin from the ops shop.
  11. dal = hoover... leo has slowed down.... it was suggested put egg rings in the dish with the biscuits.
  12. some one on here once suggested use a home brand nappy with a tail hole cut in it... we were going to do it that way but we just made sophie an outside doggie for a few days...now shes fixed and so not a problem.
  13. same as ellz, we had a tie.... very annoying, i needed both of em to get in the car! but really annoying to have to wait.... made me late and mr clydes said i was a nutter. :D
  14. people are scared of my large dalmation... he's the largest i have ever seen... his heads is high thigh height on me and i am not tall only 5'6, i can rest my hand on his head without reaching down. he however is not in the least bit vicous... the jrt or the foxie cross will bite... if pushed... maybe any breed that is large would suffice... not just a guarding one, although dals do have this reputation of being snappy... not in my experience, but they are known for it.
  15. Their quirks are why we love them. Sophies really odd, but it makes her an indivdial, and special.
  16. Leo just loves you to put it on or change collars! Especially to his swimming collar, which is nylon not leather. I need to make hom wear the nylon one more tho as he tends to fall in the dam pretty often! He likes to pretend he had no idea it was there! Not sure how he'd react to it.being off might have to try later.
  17. my statment is if something is chewed, well why have you a baby gate on your room....? and if it was out of your room, whos fault is that? seems he's learning to pick up... seriously tired spots tonight they have been up the paddock wood carting all day... they have to run home as there is no where for them in the trailer or cars on the way home... snoring is i hear... real soring... guess its better than farting.
  18. my point was to say, just because a breeder has a tick list does not mean the person they choose is any better than me, who actually moves heaven and earth for our dogs... we recently nearly lost one to snake bite... i did however loose enough money in that incident which means i cannot afford the replacement car i need nor did we have christmas. we do have 4 re tread dogs in our home, all of which were re homed pure bred due to owner faults... not so much the dog... their aint many cross bred dals around...imo i think its good that some bad homes re home... as the dogs often get a better life... i know ours did. some breeders choose criteria that i think are personal life style choices... for us and our dogs... just because you hd live in a city does not mean your an unsuitable owner... and me as a country person (having never lived any where else) how can i judge....what a good life for a dog might be in city? as for snobs they are in every walk of life... oodle owners seem to be the pits... the only ones i know refused to listen to reasonable people tell them about pure dogs and still got an oodle any way... even smart country girls who should know better about genetics and breeding coming from a long line of farmers who bred exceptional stock... you can't tell stupid any thing. oh and my opinion on working dogs in city homes is not really one that should be aired but in so many ways the Australian idea of every one should have a bc or a kelpie or a blue cattle dog is so wrong... so very wrong... and the fact so many are in pounds is just heart breaking..
  19. i do in a way agree that the pure bred dog owners can be snobie... because you have a very rigid mind set on what makes a responsible owner. as applied to enquiring puppie owners... i found in my personal experience... there were about 100 boxes to tick and one or two non ticks are all you needed to count you out. as some one who came from farming back ground where breeding working dogs are part of life, who's family took care of any unwanted puppies personally to be labeled a nasty byb... who should be throw out is a bit harsh... for a dog forum. where not one of you know me persoally.
  20. cool pics.... as soon as you said bf and family i went yeah i remeber now... having sophie has made my son measurement as he gets called to pick up his stuff... thats a great by product..
  21. i tend to disagree with the whole idea he bored.. in the traditional sense... and the clothes have become his entertainment. he found something to keep him busy.. i just find my washing line out side the yard good... but leave nothing out.. sohpie turns 4 in 3 days and still chews things to bits... if any thing is left out. in an ideal world you would leave stuff out, but in our case its best just to pick up and leave nothing around for her to chew.
  22. i keep getting told i am too short and blunt with people, why is it that humans need the long wordy sentences. surely hand signals are the same? the dogs and the horses know.... instantly... ijust hold hand up and i get stero butts hitting the floor. work mates just think i lost the plot. although its a good thing mr clydes drives horses as well, and knew the comand for left wen i yelled come over in 6 lines of auckland traffic!
  23. maybe talk to the vet... unless she is getting enough to take the edge of her hunger with snacks.. can you take out the snacks for a day or 2 and see how she goes.
  24. the whole lets get spayed... i did tell a mate that recently... or when i said i should get that usless uterus ripped out... they thought i meant mine not the bitches! although i would get it done... but they (insert rolly eyes) won't let me. i have given the warning aaarrh to the OH to stop it... what ever he was doing.
  25. oh dear.... i am a bit upset for you.... i was feeling for you this morning when there was only one post and you had been waiting all night for words of how your dog is.
