  1. Smart dog min effort max reward, shows he thought that one thru well.
  2. Great post hd, but a soft dog exposed to abuse does carry some reactional baggage. Which can come out when you least expect it too. It can always be the habit the revert to..... When you do something they find uncomfortable, same as horses. They do move on I don't hassle Sophie about her toileting, as she used to eat all poop she could find under stress, even now when she insists on peeing and pooping right on the entrance steps and all over the path.
  3. leo is used to being crated from time to time... it just depends... the other dal sometimes will not sleep at night without him being with her ie howling at door digging thru door... she cannot go all night she wants up lots.. she has had puppies(in the past before we got her) and seems to have a very small bladder. there is no way i am getting up at 3.30 to drag the dog out for a walk... yes i did say drag... he is not a morning doggie.. he opens one eye as i pass on the way out.. and grons at me... he never exits the house.. this will get worse as it gets colder. my routine constantly changes atm..next week no earlies at all....
  4. your right... the dog today did... greeted me at the gate at 10.30ish lots of madness and barking... i boil jug inside and then the days program went something like... sleeping on the floor.... then sleeping on the couch next to me at lunch.... sleeping on the dining room floor while i sorted in there.. sleeping on the bed when they thought i was not watching... some sunning ourself on the concrete. then followed me outside to get the door to block the shed...so we pee'd on some stuff.. as for jumping leo does not... but they do tend to graze... so the fruit will be in danger along with my bed. oh and its a very large crate large enough for 2 dals not just one.
  5. so 4-5 hours might be fine... as a once off. leo is a social butterfly... and likes other dogs so the other dog barking is just too much. combine that with mr clydes retreaded jrt who was rehomed due to his escapology skills... the only place that dog does not escape from is a crate or car! see the weak spot was the garden shed door... notice i said was.... on the up side their fibre intake is fine... well wooden door is edible fibre? right. i have proped and jamed the replacement other door in place... so yard might be fine, now. i can try over night and if he is out then its the crate tomorrow... stuff him... learning bad habbits off barney that'll learn him a stint in jail... BIG disclaimer... i know it won't "learn him" but i can live in hope.
  6. does any one lock their dog in the crate while they are at work.. how long? do you leave large amount of water? scenario is neighbour (1/2km away we live rural) has a barking dog.. he goes in and out in truck quad etc all day... his dog goes off its nut... mine has now found a weak spot in the fence... which will be attended to this weekend if possible... on a few days does my dog stay at my house... he is with my other dogs but has now decided he can get out... and go to the neigbours... given the sheep between here and there not a good look for a large dog. i go to work atm early and so i can let him have and out of crate time and toilet stop then... child gets up(7ish) and leaves about(7.45ish) so another he can go in then... i might get home as late as 2pmish... will he need water... top temp will be less than 20degrees. he would be fine over night in the crate 10pm-7am, but day i worry... it might be too much if night and day with small breaks....
  7. same... he will also talk on hand comand but only when he feels like it.... so often it flops... screaming sit down and %*^*& shut up ya face works if i slam him in the crate in the middle of night... i call it attention seeking at its worst.
  8. waves madly to woodbyne.... sounds like your new dog is an oafie sophie.... she will come out of the house yard...so close she is touching your butt, but something tiggers her, then so quickly you have no idea she is gone... back inside on the bed. its just short of 2 years since we picked her up... so now i am looking at obedience trials with her.... she is looking to do stuff... finally but its a long track. i have sort of got her doing some shake hands and a trick i kind of invented that i call shuffle butt, where she sit but hops her butt forward, means she can't take your fingers off when you have a treat. i just sort of shapped it, but sophie given her life means she focus on food.... but can't work out what got the treat. i think it mostly trial and error... and what works for your dog. me i think its a girl thing... boys just get more out there when stressed and girls just want to go home. maybe i should wake her up off the couch.... even the whole laying round the house has taken a long long time... we hardly have hole dug these days.
  9. not much to add but its not that usual.. my dal is 4 and he has just discovered the small stuffed toy tiger on the headboard of our bed... tiggers been there 15 years much longer than i have even been around... he was for all the world gunna attack it...untill it chased him.... then he evacutated... fast... with no grace and he ended up tangled in himself...
  10. mine go for a mini walk a couple of times per week with mr clydes...in the daylight if i get home early enough they might come out with horsey... although peak winter i work sometimes 12hours so its hard cause i am lazy after a long day. so they miss out. weekends they are out and about but they have time with mr clydes at his home workshop... when no customers are around... the customer attack is funny to watch not funny to be. ours find ways to exercise without a walk, but then thats the beauty of acreage.
  11. well without dol i would not have met some great folks like woodbyne and kirty...and barkon who transported sophie... the short story was woobyne asked for help with 5x dals she basically had dumped on her. sophie was one, they were terrifed and unhandled/unsocialised at all. 2 years later she is a better memeber of doggie society than leo who has no reason to be a pia...we needed another dog like a hole in the head... and although its been huge work and tough too... the fact that she loves playing and snuggling like no other dog i have met... which is nice she can forgive being underfeed over bred and treated with i think force.
  12. doona snow see you don't really need a trip to the real snow, it visited you. happens here to... i got lots of free doonas but no more. all gone. got free woollen blankies some are now ripped although they lasted longer than the doonas.
  13. i see you had to lash out all stops to clean up.... and as quick as that it was gorn again.... nothing like a quick doggie clean up.... it must be bad though when even the dog won't recycle...happens occasionally.
  14. yeah so was i meaning green and round... but the last ones were hot! boy it was funny all the coughing and gaging and no pea.... my spots could find food in a vaccum...
  15. i know escapees in this house hot or cold do not stand a chance based on the fact i own 2spots.... they will que for carrots and catch quiet well... i did notice leo coughing and harking the other arvo as i was dishing up tea... i think the hot escapee burnt his poor widdle self... it might teach him to test before you pounce, nah not likely...
  16. brown skidies in the bed.... now that is a whole nother topic.
  17. mmm not a task i would volunteer for either.... it almost worth paying the vet bill on that score.
  18. oh yes..... You would think they would learn..... But no.... Quite amazing what they can poop.... And what you don't see....
  19. yeah its funny seeing lots of poop coming through joined together.... like yesterday.... little bit of something... like mini frankfurts.... its suprising what can come out either end... like the great mango seed adventure...
  20. yeah its funny how they can swallow something worthy of a snake and not even blink.
  21. well it was a piece sliced of the side, but still large to make you have tears.
  22. have the same drama with horses, but they only want to pay $500.00 for horse who is olympic quality.... who goes to that level... certainly not some one with only $500.00 to spend.
  23. or stupid.... it was almost a frost this am... almost.... if i had not put the window washer on and windscreen wipered... it would have frozen on the way down the drive with the cold air..
  24. so the other night i am cutting and peelin spuds as ya do.... and one squirts out of my fingers, wet and slippery suckers they can be when you wash the dirt off... it hits the deck... and i am sure this happens in every other dol house hold... quickest to draw fangs gets it. before i can even think leave it... or say it.. so drop that $^&$^# potato is the comand... as its swiftly followed by a large gulp... and burp... another item into a dally! some times it makes you wonder how the hell they can be so slick...
