  1. actually i was under the impression that dogs don't get vitamin D the same way we do. besides we here in Australia only need 5 minutes of sunshine to get our daily dose of vit D. So when she takes him out before and after work he would probably get that much anyway.
  2. The only thing that strikes me about that is I assume the military kennel their dogs and that is not usually a recommended thing with a stafford in that they like to be with their people. However, would depend on the individual dog I suppose. This dog sounds like it does need a job though. Wonder if the mail sorting people at customs take anything other than the bog standard breeds?. I think I have seen one bull breedish dog on the tv before. Some of them go home with the handler some are kenneled. But don't forget they work a full shift with their handler everyday, which is more contact than most dogs would get. Even most people who work at home don't actually spend hours straight doing stuff with their dogs
  3. Would it cause any issues to have a pup come and for it to have more access to inside and to the humans than the outside dogs? I mean would it foster jealousy and bad relations between the established outside dogs and the new comer because its kind of like treating the pup as higher in the order of things than the other two dogs?
  4. sorry I can't remember who suggested it; but it was a great suggestion to see if he can find a place in the military. He would be in a cat-less situation (as much as any can be), handled by a very experienced person, and have a very stimulating life
  5. my two play really rough together and I like it. Its excellent exercise and has helped build their friendship. But I can see you might be worried about a smaller dog or pup being mowed down by two large dogs playing roughly. I would be inclined to either put the smaller dog/pup away at such times, or teach it to stay away. I think it would be a bit of a shame to stop your large dogs playing together. As for them playing too roughly with the smaller dog. Well one of my dogs won't at all play with any other dog. And my other dog will play more gently with smaller dogs, she adjusts her style to the other dog. So maybe that's what your dogs would do too.
  6. great story! My lung capacity is dreadful, I hope my poor dogs (or anyone else) never have to rely on it.
  7. I think your overall summary of the dog is pretty harsh. Sounds like a great dog, that gets carsick. I used to have to put my stumpy tail on that medication, and yeah, its not the best. It certainly does half knock them out. She got much better as she got older. She used to not be able to go five minutes without vomiting. As time went on she could go about an hour. The advise about really short trips and building the time up is good. And make sure the driving is as smooth as possible... slowing down well before corners... taking off slowly etc. That makes a big difference.
  8. Nah, not in Sydney sadly I hope you have a great time doing your research though! Sounds like loads of fun and very interesting
  9. Saw him at Wagga in June. oh I met him at Wagga too, but I didn't pay as much attention as I should have because I fell in love with his Dane puppy brother He was awesome looking!
  10. Corvus if I lived anywhere near you, and if I actually was going to get a puppy, I would love to participate in your research
  11. Hi I am the rep for central NSW/ACT. I don`t only supply people who will buy a whole pallet. I do offer breeders and people in more remote areas if they want to get a pallet with their friends they can get substantial discounts. I deliver to all of Sydney and surrounding areas and can arrange deliveries from Newcaste to Canberra or collection from shows as advertised on my website or from my place in Picton NSW. I answer all my emails so if you haven`t gotten a reply there has been a problem. Please send me a PM and I will make sure you get your sample and anser any questions you may have. Kel. thanks for getting back to me. It is possible the hotmail account is to blame. It wouldn't be the first time unfortunately!
  12. this happens to me all the time!!! and its very prickly! and not very nice either
  13. If it was me, my first thought would be to redirect the dogs with training; use treats to encourage them to associate kids jumping on the trampoline with lying on their bedds and getting treats for being good dogs. I believe that even your dog with dementia could manage this as its a fairly simple form of learning. although you know him better than me. I don't really see that the kids are doing anything wrong - maybe you could just ask them to please ignore the dogs; and explain that this will help to prevent the dogs from barking.
  14. this is interesting. I inquired (via email) about this product a few months ago. I got the general feeling that they couldn't really be bothered. They said it would cost them too much to send me a sample and that they said that really they only supplied people who would buy a whole pallet at a time. I sent another email asking a couple more questions and never got a reply
  15. I really want to thank Nekhbet I had started reading about how the professionals would train a Diabetic alert dog. And it was so complicated! Nekhbet pointed out an extremely simple way for me to do it! And obviously I am just extremely so blessed to have a dog that pretty much knew what she needed to do with harldly any input from us this photo was taken in the days before Little Miss was diagnosed. This was when she started her vigil. I think the photo says it all
  16. I just so excited to say Delta did a successful alert at 6:20 this morning :D we are so proud of her!
  17. here are some of my own. "woe is me": "well aren't you going to strap me in?" "I used to fit " "I feel like something's missing"
  18. this thread is so good I am enjoying everyone's photos so much!
  19. yep don't worry she is getting all the praise she deserves :o We are all so proud of her. We only got her in June and she has already given us so much
  20. o.k. this is what happened this morning: This was probably a coincidence, but I'll be checking from now on! This morning at 6 a.m Delta came into our room (from Little Miss' room) and woke me up. I was pretty exhausted (getting up a few times at night to do BGLs) and I didn't think much of it. She went back to Little Miss' room. And came back to me again and jumped on our bed. About ten minutes later Little Miss woke up and called to us saying she had hypo symptoms - and yep - she was 3.3 (hypo is under 4 and people are liable to fit or become unconscious under 3.5) Well I'll never be ignoring her again!
  21. thanks babydragon. Yep I have found them. I sent them emails which don't seem to be working so I'll try to give them a phone call in the next couple of days.
  22. sorry Nekhbet - I keep putting the 'h' before the 'k' in your name! its hard to know what to do sometimes. On the one hand I don't want to minimise the feeling that diabetes makes her very different - ofcourse on the other hand I want her to be as safe and healthy as possible.
  23. yeah that would be great In the U.S Diabetes Alert Dogs are around and places that specifically train puppies to becomes DADs. the dogs there also learn to distinguish between hypers and hypos. definitely let me know if you go ahead with training her to alert
  24. thanks Nehkbet, you have raised some excellent points, the clothes sniffing had me wondering too. It also made me wonder if I started freezing all these smells whether she would end up distinguishing a hypo smell or a frozen smell! Delta seems naturally drawn to her, she has been checking on her and sniffing her mouth since Little Miss became unwell a few weeks ago. I think Delta knew what was happening before the rest of us did. So yes, I feel that she has a kind of natural aptitude for this. hmmm I understand what you are saying about the doorbell being a complicating factor... I have been worried about that. Delta is not a barker, so I that will be difficult to train. And because she is a great Dane I am worried about her hurting little Miss if she carries on too much like a pork chop. But yes I can really see that connecting the smell to ringing a door bell is would be harder than a more natural behaviour a dog would perform anyway. The first thought I had was to teach her to jump on our bed. But the reason I scrapped that idea was because I'm sure Little Miss would eventually have her bedroom door closed. I guess if I can get her to bark that may be the best solution. eta: forgot to say I will definitely try to do the training at the time she is having the hypo! Definitely sounds logical to me!
