no where near as interesting as the study done to see how much energy is expended when a penguin waddles LOL but do see your point , hmmm the molar fracture sounds interesting I had an old dog that I had a dead and broken tooth removed as it was making her unwell I wonder if a bone did do it ? she did get a lot of different bones ? -

Ahh yes always the money issue on research , and research paid for by the vested interests tends to follow the we want to prove something to our advantage line , guess the butchers dont make enough to do the research , but doggy dentistry is expensive stuff would prefer not to get caught out with my rottie she weighs around 47 kg expensive for GA -
I have just removed my third leach for the week and I dont know how many in the last 3 months , we use salt to get them off but I know that this stings a bit does anyone else have a pain free way to get them off the dogs ? as by the time I can see them through the coats the things are huge and keisha gets quite upset about them she comes to me to get rid of them but the salt stings so am following the poor thing around with a handful of salt she runs now when she sees the salt container , wish it was a little less wet up here now that the water tanks and the dam is full thanks

they are open at Tahmoor from Tuesday till Friday from 8 :30 am to 4:30 pm , I buy frozen thighs and tails as well as drumsticks of turkey , if you drop the bag in the box on concrete they separate quite well . if your feeding big dogs its easy just to pack and re freeze , they call themselves the ingham factory outlet , They are not always sure what they will have on any given day as they get what the processing line has done .

Keeping Teeth Clean

I have found with the old dogs teeth that lamb spine bones work wonders , the bones are quite hard but not hard enough to do damage , the big marrow bones ours have on occasion we take them away once they have the ends chewed off have not had any broken teeth yet Does anyone know the odds of dogs breaking their teeth on bones , has there been a study done to back it up ? as I have not seen one it is always good to read the actual numbers and to know the condition of the teeth that did break on bones -

Spin-off From Pack Leader Thread
Jacquiboss&scoop replied to Henrietta's topic in General Dog Discussion
We have 3 dogs and dinners are all given sep so that they can each eat in peace I have one delicate eater and two hoovers so we try to make sure that they all have a decent meal Having said that the two hoovers will also get fat if they get the chance so in the interest of good health we do sep them , When we go away they are often fed in the same room with no issues I just prefer not to have to tell the two piggies that Keisha has a right to her dinner ( she will walk away and leave half her food in the bowl ) with bones they are given them together and all spread out to eat as suits them . treats mean that I have 3 doggies drooling on my feet all have a treat each . As the dynamics stand in our yard if you have it its yours , if you walk off and leave it its whoever gets it first has it have yet to see any harm with mine from this but with more than one dog with equal desire for something you could well have an issue , if it works for you why change it ? the only resource that gets guarded around here is the old dogs sheepskin blanket he no share the bed ( might be because the other 2 ratbags ripped up his old one ) -
Hi Aussie T I think it is related to prey drive , if you post your question in the training section you will get a bundle of info on what drives them to chase and fetch , and how you can use this to your advantage when training other things. thanks

Can Any Help With This Breed
Jacquiboss&scoop replied to jess live die's topic in General Dog Discussion
HI I have an ancient staffy cattle first cross that looks a lot like her , but we did know he was of mixed parentage to start with , some of the BYB dont secure their bitch very well so could be anything in there but kelpie cattle mix with a staff looks a good possibility How old is she ? is she over a year old ? we could all be wrong if she is still under 6 months your friend might have one big baby -
HI A Little point on strata law for town houses and flats in regards to pets , if the animal is not taken on to shared areas it is allowed , this is a legal one that will hold , regardless of the strata members vote , this has been proven in court before but as you are only renting the town house the owner would need to present the matter . If the dogs are subject to complaint then they may require the animals removed but they can not in fact enforce a no to them living on the property at all if the animal needs to cross common property to gain entrance and exit to the property this can be an issue but with small dogs they can be carried hope this helps as a lot of people have issues with strata bodies and pets but there are proven cases and allowances within the act that mean that a strata body cannot rule that no pets are allowed at all hope this helps a little

Heat Pads For Older Dogs
Jacquiboss&scoop replied to Jacquiboss&scoop's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Thanks have hunted under whelping heat pads on google this is more the idea there are a few that match what I need but the one I found with a variable temp didnt have a chew proof cord ( not that it is too important he is a bit past chewing his bed ) , didnt think to search that one before , have not seen them in doggy shops around here but they are a fairly poor effort all the cheep stuff , polyester beds that last five mins leads with plastic clips OMG toys that disintigrate in 5 mins ( that might be the dogs fault staffy cross , a rottie and a Husky cattle cross can be a bit hard on toys ) that sort of thing so no good quality stuff -
Thankyou Scmoos boss, my dog is a Maltese x Shitsu weighing 8.6 Kg. I am regularly supplied with Garfish or Tommies for looking after a friends dog each day while he works so am lucky and will use some of that with Sardines and Tuna. I am worried about the Egg white deficiency as I give my dog a raw egg every day with fish oil and garlic oil I better stop this! Will give it him on his fish days. Hi noticed that you are a little new here as well so welcome in to let you know there are quite a few threads on feeding raw to your dogs with recipies and nutritional data for diets as well I have found it to be a fantastic source of information with lots of interesting ideas

HI I feed for my lot 1 x raw fish meal a week , this is often canned tuna , pilchards , sardines fresh whiting the odd frozen cod when it is hot I replace the mince or RMB portion of their meal for that day with the equal amount of fish EG 47 kg rottie female will get 2 x 400gm tin of tuna and one small tin of sardines in oil, for the staffy cattle cross will get 1 x tin tuna same size as the rottie and 1 x small tin sardines. we mix this with egg and veggies slop . As feeding large amounts of raw fish or egg white to dogs can create deficincy in their b vitimin levels as will liver you should not feed these things everyday once a week is enough for them to gain from it without it doing harm to them and they do love their fishies mind you I am not so keen on the fish kisses after dinner

Heat Pads For Older Dogs
Jacquiboss&scoop replied to Jacquiboss&scoop's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
thank you Staff & Toller and Crisovar I had not seen either of these before they both look like great ideas have you used the dog bed yourself at all ? do you know anyone who has and if they were happy with it ? , I had only seen the 240 V plug in heat pads to be placed under blankets which did worry me a bit , Crisovar how long does the heat last from the Snuggle Safe ? would it last 10 hours ? looking forward to the little old man being a little more spoilt this winter -
HI We have a 16 year old staffy cattle dog cross who is starting to feel his age , we would like to update his dog bed to take some pressure off sore joints and to add a heat pad to help keep him warm this winter , he sleeps inside and loves sheepskin rugs with hide base or my couch but he is getting a bit unsteady on the up and down now and slips when he gets up so we want to give him his own bed on the floor any bed type we try would need to be able to have a heat pad in or on it safely as we are in the blue Mountians and winter is cold even inside at night any suggestions on the heat pad where and what type people have found to be good thanks

HI Gabba Welcome to new puppies, they cry , suggest that during the day puppy spends small amounts of time in his sleeping place ( do you have a Crate for him Crates are a fantastic den for a unhappy puppy ) as well as at night . Puppies are not used to being alone they often have their litter mates and somtimes even still sleep close to mum at 8 weeks old so he is going to feel a little unsure , The first few nights tend to be a little sleepless but if you practise during the first few days when he is sleepy putting him where he is expected to sleep and being aware of when he is awake and ready to play going to him ( before he crys or after he settles not while he is crying ) he will begin to settle ( also helps if they can hear and see u moving around even if they can not get to you) , make sure that where he sleeps is his place , he is not sharing it or expected to move out of it for your family every day activity and can continue to be his place throughout his life this is one reason why people like crates ticking clocks , radio on a low volume close to him can help a little but he will cry as he is a baby steel your self and do not go to him when he does and you should be done with this in a week , he will learn that crying will not get a response from you , you can go to him after he is quiet and give him some attention , I tend to wait for the cry to stop at night as my pups sleep confined inside I go to them and take outside to eliminate and then back to bed for both of us no play all business it does pass and you can take out the earplugs and get some sleep , Oh and we do love puppy picks please

Introducing 2 Maybe 3 Dogs
Jacquiboss&scoop replied to whitka's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Hi It might be worth moving your post to the rescue forums , they are used to fostering and placing all different kinds of dogs together , they might be able to help you to find a workable solution for bringing your dog home with you, but try to remember young bouncy dogs for an arthritic older dog can be a lot to cope with and the dogs you are introducing him to are adults as well would be risky if all are entire males and your old dog may well come off the worst for it , if he is fine and happy with your parents and able to stay there it may be a happier option for him in his old age
