  1. Thank god for timber floors here , I feel for you , can you sling it over the washing line and hose it off while you give a scrub with a broom
  2. there are workshops fairly often for clicker training so you might be able to book in for one , also lots of utube and DVD options to try out as well think the most important part is timing it all right am hopeless at click treat lead altogether so just use the word yes LOL but works well for a lot of things I want them to do
  3. My old dog washes the younger ones all the time , does no damage to the fur though just leaves them silky soft and gleaming they are not allowed to move while he does this perhaps a bone for the kelpie to keep him busy ? and add a bit of calcuim to his diet he might stop trying to suppliment off your poor boy (SP )
  4. Yup rotties here they tend to act on their tummies too , when she settles a bit see what rocks her boat have seen poodles go nuts for squeal toys , she may just need to be worked like you would a pup , attach her lead to you and make her follow you around sit and wait for her dinner she will get the hint
  5. HI show dogs need to be able to , stand for examination , walk and pace on lead and thats about it I am afraid most train their dogs more than this but this is the bare bones of what is required . She may well just be pushing your buttons as you are not the boss yet LOL I have had a few dogs perfect for me total ignorance for anyone else
  6. I think the laws must be diff in NSW Council must hold un microchiped dogs for 7 days before destruction Council must hold chipped dogs for 14 days before destruction this is part of our state laws local councils have no lee way in this IF QLD does not have these restrictions or if their limit is 3 days then yes would say they can do this
  7. Agree with Greymate , our kids and dogs have always worked because the dogs knew they were dogs , trained with NILF and behaviour was already what you would require from a family dog It works well the dog does not have the expectation of being the apple of your eye 24 x 7 and can sit on the other side of the room and watch with interest without bumping , nudging new babe and mum
  8. Aww! I agree! I do think they bring out the nurturer in you! I sleep on my side with my knees slightly bent and Poppy usually sleeps in the little space in between my tummy and my knees. It makes me feel so content and happy. Especially when my fiance is working night shift or is away for some reason. She always comes up and lies next to my head for a cuddle when I get into bed too then goes down and snuggles in for the night! <3 Thats funny you say that. My inlaws to be are NOT doggy people but when they came to visit they coo'ed and aww'ed over Poppy so much that they had her up on the couch with them giving them cuddles. My fiance was shocked! He thought they would be very much against that. They still ask how Poppy is everytime the call! My parents aren't either - we had a dog growing up but he was an 'outside' dog. So to have 3 in the house was a shock for my folks - however they love them and love giving them pats and cuddles when they come over. My inlaws last dog was allowed in the house, slept in the bed etc so they took to our three easily - however they don't quite understand pack dynamics etc as they have never had more than one dog at a time. They actually humanise the dogs more than we do. My MIL is still going on about the fact that she has to buy 2 more dryzabone coats because Oscar and Lilly will get jealous that Patch is the only one with one It has given me a bit of insight as to how they will be as grandparents - and I see overbearing inlaws in my future We are always told we don't feed the dogs enough etc. Oh we had that too! Poppy had been sick and we were doing the whole cooked chicken breast then slowly re-introducing kibble thing as the vet reccomended. Meanwhile father in law to be wanted to feed her his left over sausage! I agree with the bolded statement. I would never get a dog JUST because I wanted a baby! I just think that there are some aspects of puppyhood that may help prepare you for parenthood. What do you mean? I guess her breed or cross breed (small) and her temprement/personality makes her a good practice baby. She loves to be with us and is oh so adorable but I think lots of breeds are like that??? Some toy breeds were developed to be baby substitutes. They have large head size compared to their small body, have large round eyes in comparison with their head size, and have had their muzzles shortened to give a round 'baby-face' appearance. They were bred to be house companions and to be cuddled. The phenomenon is called neoteny. Besides that, I do notice on DOL that a lot of owners of these sort of breeds tend to refer to themselves as their dog's Mummy and refer to their partners as their dog's Daddy. Happens with other breeds as well, but it seems to be more prevalent with young childless couples that own 'baby-faced' breeds like cavs or shih tzus. Wow! I had never thought of that before but it is very true! We refer to ourselves as Mummy and Daddy. And the features of a pure Cav are very human baby like! Very interesting. I think if anyone every did a study of this like another poster suggested it would be interesting to see the types of breeds people chose. See, that makes me SO sad! I never want to replace Poppy. I want her to be part of the family and I want our future children to love and care for her like we do. I will be doing A LOT of research about how to bring home a baby with and ensure that the family dog isn't put out of place when the time does come! Never had any issues introducing new babies to our dogs , Poppy will be fine with your new arrival , just watch out for the over protective side when we brought home my second child no one but direct ( me Hubby and big sis ) were allowed in the upstairs part of the house by our rottie girl , no unattended visits to bubs bedroom MIL was bailed at the top of the stairs a few times ( bailed not bitten)
  9. Grew up with dogs , come from a huge extended family grew up with kids Now have dogs and kids , very different , dogs are easier , human babies are helpless dependant people I do feel that it can be an experience for learning to consider a living creature before yourself but it is a whole world apart from babies If you want a child have a child (or adopt foster or go into childcare ) If you want a dog have a dog I could never substitute one for the other , I love both and would have 50 of each if I could
  10. Roo is also a very lean meat and not too hard to source , does your little dog still have teeth , can he just eat the skinless whole ? Also red lea chickens blacktown area , used to sell direct but would ring and check
  11. Not in sydney but in thilmire near picton is the Inghams outlet , they are open tues to Fri you can order what you would like price varies but is very competitive , they also do turkey meats as well , cash only payment required bulk orders are easier for them
  12. NSW Microchip + vacc to be able to sell or dispose of dog/ cat under 6 months all animals over 6 months are to be registered dogs and cats enforcement is a different matter falls under local council. Qld now need to be chip before sale but this was not the case 2 years ago am not sure about Vac Will be interested to see what state has what ruling
  13. we give a little minced chicken frame with the offal chopped up fine and mixed in , our dogs are a little precious and will reject liver or Kidney on its own , ( find spat out around the yard and house yuck ) Other than that is all meat on the bone or whole fish
  14. the deaf boxer also has melanomas , the risk of cancer in white boxers is much higher than in other colours , yes the dog had cancer brain affected was PTS when she was 5 poor thing I agree that deaf is not unmanageable and can live a normal life but the high cancer risks ?
  15. Having had a dog owned by family with cancer , I would not wish this on any animal. how do you know that the new owner will accept when the animal has no more joy in life and is living in pain to do the right thing , with a stoic dog like a boxer will the owner even be aware of how sick they have become in order to end the pain for them ? Is it right to sell someone a puppy with a very high probability of dying in pain and young ? Is it right to sell a puppy that may be breed from that will pass on these issues with a much higher chance than what is normal for the breed ? If this puppy were bloodstock what would be the outcome ? I do not like culling , but sometimes it is the kindest and best outcome ,
  16. HI , If the only thing that has changed is the dinner then best to change back , but be prepared that it is not the food , all the wattle trees have decided that it is spring this week here and a flowering like mad , plus a few other things as well have a look around your garden and see if any plants have come up recently too Good luck with the dinner change
  17. We dont do dog parks , we were lucky enough to buy acreage a few years ago and our dogs free run at home , before we bought the dogs ran with us on bikes or on one of a few deserted beaches , I see the need for dogs to free run and have room to chase a ball or toy but no need at all to run free with dogs that are not known to us. the risk is too big and with most breeds of dog the expectation that they will get along with every tom dick and harry dog is not fair . I recall when the parks came into place in NSW the main reason was to allow dogs to run free , not to be a free for all
  18. Would not feel bad , at least your pup is happy to see people not hiding behind you shaking like a leaf . Good way to get him used to lots of people around but not interested in puppy antics is to take him to a fairly busy rail or bus station and sit him down out of the way close to where all of the people come off . to the local sports ground as well on a day when the clubs are playing sit him next to you and just stand encourage him to sit , he will get up keep the leash short and let him come to the idea that you are not moving , and most people are ignoring him some might stop for a pat but most do not , keep the distance enough that he is interested but not going nuts this is how we get our dogs used to large crowds it takes about 4 days every evening for half an hour or so to get a calm result
  19. The colour factor , a $ play on ignorance , have a neighbour with an older white boxer , she says was going to be a cull as there are apparently health issues with pure white ( her boy is deaf ) and due to sun exposure has been treated for melanoma . White is not accepted colour for the standard as far as I know and I would not buy one
  20. I wouldnt try smacking or growling at the washing were I you , my hubby had to repair our water pump for the house one dark wet cold night and swore and got cranky in the process , we now have had 3 chewed pump controls as the dogs think the pump deserves to be punished (they never bothered with it before ) ( keisha also gets in the way whenever we go near it ) LOL. easiest is to not have dog and washing in the yard at the same time and remove the pot plants to an area she can not get to them
  21. Our desexed bitches find it highly offensive any dog who tried to do this to them would be told well and truly , my old entire male will Air hump when the neighbours bitches come in season and sniff with vain hope at my rottie , but does not try to mount them . So long as it is not people I am not too fussed , but my dogs think it is bad manners LOL , the old boy does not have any dogs try not sure why perhaps he gives off a dont you dare .
  22. poor babies , hope they all heal and find homes , the owner should be locked in a small cage and see how long they survive
  23. the frames do slow them down a bit as they HAVE to chew , also Whole lamb neck is good as they must chew it , and pork hocks these make an entire meal for our staff x and the rottie has to slow down to eat them as well , if you want to feed poultry try turkey wings and drumsticks as these are larger , if he is bolting the wings you might want to stop feeding them to reduce the chance of choking
  24. Block her off from the pool ASAP, puppies like small children have no Idea of water safety she might be able to swim a little but it is exhausting and scary for a dog to fall into a pool drowning can happen very quickly
  25. For a young puppy yes......a puppy that's feeding 4 or more times a day, but by around 3 1/2-4 months, a puppy doesn't need more than 2 meals per day. I still think I`m feeding her too much as she is not finshing most meals and does poop a lot. how does she look , if she is leaving food and looks plump then you could be feeding to much reduce the amount until she eats all of what she is given , has she been for a vet visit ? ask the vet for their opinion on her current weight , remember that it is very important for labs to grow slow and light , if she is that full she is leaving food I would say reduce her intake by quite a bit
