Also how many people stop breeding because the breed has become "the " dog of the decade so to speak and quality is hard to find ?

Am I Feeding The Right Amount?
Jacquiboss&scoop replied to FranVT's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Hi The other thing to keep in mind is that an adult dog even when in full work rarely needs as much food as a growing puppy , as she is getting close to being her adult size and weight she will not need as much food and a mature dog is often not as active as a puppy, As I keep rotties and large breeds this fall off is quite dramatic with a smaller breed it may not be as evident but will still be a factor. The 2 wings in the morning and her normal dinner sound fine but always go on how she looks to you , to much cover over the ribs and drop the food down a bit , -
I think its a little bit of resource protective behaviour from what you have outlined I have to say at the outset that I do not handle any of my animals when they eat their meals , and I expect them to leave me alone when I am eating mine. We do take things we have not given them away from them without issue they have a give and leave command that they follow all the time I suppose we could use this with their dinner bowl should we need to. If you feel that he has to give way on this then there are a few ways forward that are not likely to get you into a confrontation Use the TOT method for each bit of food he gets , he gets not one bite without working for it , the growl was most likely leave me and my dinner alone , he is most likely differentiating between dinner and treats ie work for treat get to eat treat , work for dinner get to eat dinner. you gave it to me is now mine , If you cannot effect an instant short correction (IE taking hold of Collar and removal of bowl and walk away ) then do the TOT method for him to regain it. Long complicated corrections can make it hard for the dog to understand what it was that set of the correction.

Have to agree with this , have seen a lot of that mix and the tri colour and spotting is a common one , they make a good working dog a little more hard headed than your average border with stock and with cattle you need it

We have a 17 year old staffy cross who has been going deaf since he was about 13 , it is a slow thing and they can adjust we have hand signals as he is also going blind this can be hard from a distance but he does not go far from us now tends to follow right on our heals if not at home. try to put her bed or mat where she can see all directions perhaps in a corner as when they are asleep is when you can most often startle them make sure that she can see and is aware of you and children , this can be a hard habit to create as you do get used to the dog being aware of where everyone is. we find that we have to go down into the yard and around his sleeping places to find him when we need him as he cannot hear us any more when we call , I think it is all about a lot of little adjustments as we have been doing this for a few years for him now we are used to it , She will still be quite happy and enjoy life , possible a little more as she can no longer hear the noises that distress her good luck with the golden years I do love mine as oldies such sweetharts

Quantities Of Dry + Raw For Puppies
Jacquiboss&scoop replied to Illaroo's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Pics will be drooled over , Pup will need food, worming deflea and vacc , toys ohh I love shopping for puppies, dont get to do this around here that much as we limit to three dogs at any one time, If you can offer good food , a warm safe place to sleep and play , training , time and social for pup you should be fine , The vet can reassure you on what special health needs he may have to start with when you see them , and if you are happy with the pot luck on size and end temp ( training does help but some traits are inherited ) then by all means go for it. -
Quantities Of Dry + Raw For Puppies
Jacquiboss&scoop replied to Illaroo's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Wow not a good start for the new baby , 50 / 50 should be fine for the pup to start with I would look at a 70 - 30 mix with the nutro being the higher of the 2 with amount as much as it can eat in about 10 mins if you think it may have been under fed before it comes home then try just chicken or chicken and rice in small amounts often for the first week ( about 5 meals a day ) then after worms are all gone and fleas are gone try introducing the nutro / raw mix. I wish you the best of luck with this one , pup to vet as soon as you can , if you think pup may not be getting fed , and you must have THIS pup go get it now why wait starvation with a young pup is a horrible sight -
Hi Chicken Ask the neighbour what they are composting , vegie scraps and garden waste should not attract foxes , we are rural with quite a few foxes about but they have no interest in the compost as we do not allow meat , egg, or cheese type scraps to be added. Also a good book on composting for your neighbour as the bin or heap should be turned regularly, kept damp ect for it to work well. Mice in the compost is a good sign it is not turned often enough and is not getting hot enough to break down Good luck with trapping the fox for a pest animal they are remarkably bright

HI Green tripe will be hard to find unless you do your own kills , I think from memory is not legal to sell in Aus, I would change back to the mix that she willingly ate and had no probs with , garlic is not a required part of the diet If she will eat apple , pear or carrot add that in Elimination takes time so you may need to wait a few weeks to see any changes from diet Is it possible that she is reacting to something else ? we have grasses and trees flowing again her now is she encountering something she has not had exposure to before ?

Stand Up And Protest! Ankc Theft Of Working Titles
Jacquiboss&scoop replied to Yesmaam's topic in General Dog Discussion
I will be writing a few letters myself , owning a working breed part of my selection process is to confirm that working titles are held within the lines in the last three generations on both sides , parents, grand parents and great grandparents. I want to see all titles earned by the ancestors of my dog , this includes herding and IPO / Schutzhund titles to show the line still has the confirmation and temp to do the job they were breed for and the work I will require from them I like them to have Confirmation CH status to be clear in the lines as well , as well but I know the standard , and the working titles are what make the choice for me , IE for an Aussie breed parent it must have either TD UDX CDX , CH is an optional extra Are we going to remove Gundog titles as well ? sometime in the future ? do our working dogs just have to be a pretty face ? -
Breeding 'allergic' Dogs
Jacquiboss&scoop replied to Remarkabull's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I read through these posts and wonder if the old Axiom that we used to use for breeding is still around Breed the best to the best and hope for the best and accept that even the best intentions can sometimes go wrong With breeds and species with a large gene pool why do we see such a high percentage of allergic and health compromised individuals ? with narrow gene pools within a breed then some trade off is made sometimes , but no breeder should trade off when a large gene pool is available to chose from -
I think in Vic pups are chipped from 12 weeks onwards , so is possible to buy without , recommend that on your first vet visit ( within 48 hours of bringing puppy home) you request the vet to chip and arrange the chip to be registered ASAP All vets can chip , they may want to wait until at least 12 weeks if pup is a toy breed but rescue have no probs chipping earlier

Umm . saying that the contract of sale is void and in law being able to do that are two different things , if the dog is getting a balanced and healthy diet that can be proven then they cannot void on that basis. You can put anything you like into a contract , but the laws in relation to contracts of sale hold out they may be trying to ensure the best homes and diets for their pups so list it in their contract of sale , in the hope that the dog will be fed correctly through its life time You should give them a call as well as a few other boston breeders , most will talk to you about their breed even if they do not have pups at the moment ( just dont call at dinner time or 3 in the morning LOL ) A few phone calls will give you a lot more of an Idea as to the breeders motive and eithics

We have a rottie that fits on and off , when she does we get different reactions from the other dogs , as the fits often start with bared teeth and falling down as well as being unresponsive to external stimulus . The old dog will sit at a distance and watch until she becomes responsive again when she is she is sniffed and washed for a good 10 mins the other young bitch becomes distressed and paws at her barks sometimes but mostly whines and comes looking for us sometimes just before the fit starts her response afterwards is to reassert her place in the doggy pack ( the dog that fits is bottom of the pecking order for furries) If it were not our own dog I think that the young bitch would attack , the old dog would ignore the young bitch has a very high prey drive

Hi Non refundable deposit I dont like but I have seen it a lot the vet check even if the breeder does not want this I highly recommend that you do so , if there are any health probs better to know sooner rather than later for your sake as well as the breeder as diet can have a long term affect on health recommendation would be normal , but the breeder cannot make you feed a particular diet , in saying that they are breeding and know a good balanced diet is important while your dog grows best to give your chosen breeder a call and have a chat with them , direct communication is often the make or break on your choice I think you may have a wait for a boston as well

Hi we are quite remote and I do not like the puppy preschools available where we are Socialisation is important Puppy needs to learn that the world is not scary so needs to get out in the world I take my pups up to the school in the morning and afternoon , they sit beside me as people walk past , stand around and chat ect they go to the shops with me every day and watch people and dogs go past and learn how to behave the way I want them too they go for park and sporting ground walks with us as well , often people up here take their dogs with them for these sort of things You may meet people while walking , or near the school or shop who also have a pup suitable to play My end goal is for my dogs not to be frightened or agro to Other dogs , people , Kids cats ect They dont need to play with and greet every other dog or person they see They just need to learn that this is part of life and can be disregarded Puppy preschool misses a lot of the required experiences for a pup to be stable outside of its home your pup will not suffer from doing it the old fashioned way , my dogs never have

I use a treat or pay off every time while the behaviour is starting that I want , I also go overboard silly with the good dog affect As I reduce the amount of treats I do two things the overboard silly stays They have to do a consecutive selection of commands to get a reward ( toy treat ) that they often dont know I have ( is in a bag at the side of the training area or on a bench at home ) and I jackpot , they do not know when I will jackpot In this way they learn that the chance of reward is very high , but there is no way of knowing when or what it might be jackpots however are very desirable start with him knowing that the treat is there and try to use something he likes but you can nibble to , with Keisha I had to have cheese around somewhere for a while , If she did what I wanted she got the cheese , if she didnt I took out and ate the cheese myself LOL It did work because she now thinks that I always have something she could miss out on

Gsp Behavioural Problems / Exercise!
Jacquiboss&scoop replied to Keyarna's topic in General Dog Discussion
I dont have a GSP but my cattle x ? is around the size of a GSD and her teenage period was a bad one the three things we did that I think made a big difference was TOT Nothing for nothing Give her something I wanted her to do when she was about to start something I didnt want the other thing we did with her was to ignore completely when she was being a cow I wouldnt even talk to her until she was sitting at my feet quietly for at least 2 mins I also have a tug toy is MY tug toy she can play with it when I let her and ONLY then , this toy became the most desired thing in the world for her LOL Expect that the behaviour may well get worse before it gets better as he will give it a few last intense attempts before he gives up on it Exercise is a key for this as well try making his fetch game longer and give him a sandpit with treats dug into it to make him work a bit ( a kids clam shell type ) If you leave him in the backyard to much he is likely to only get worse as lack of stimulation and contact makes them more frantic to get their way not less -
Help! Hysterically Crying Pup 8 Week Old Gundog Pup Need Advice
Jacquiboss&scoop replied to jessie86's topic in Puppy Chat
Thank you so much for the advice! He is getting used to more alone time and I'm doing exactly what you suggested spending time away from him when I'm home that way he is able to settle himself to sleep instead of me settling him. That is so good to hear , it is so much easier when they start to settle down and you stop wondering what on earth you were thinking when you brought home this howling little monster LOL -
Follow the fox terrier info , they are the same breed just a broken coat , used to be said that they were a little more terrier like than the smooths but they are not a common sight so you may have a little trouble finding a pup

Something I Notice About Charlie
Jacquiboss&scoop replied to W Sibs's topic in General Dog Discussion
I have a 17 year old staffy cattle cross , he will do the same thing with pups and cats , oh and small kids I think he learnt this from my old rottie girl , Now all new pups and kittens and kids are sort of handed over to him he loves to be given a new baby LOL with the nervous ones he just drops with his head on his paws and watches and waits for them to come to him , if they dont come over to him he looks away then rolls over belly up until they come over , love watching the little ones come out of their shell with him -
I think that some of the puppy preschools are to blame on this one , have seen people come out of it with the concept that their pup should meet and play with every dog , and every dog owner should feel the same at all times about their dogs On an aside I used to have a jacket for my rottie , please do not pat or play with me I am WORKING most of the time this worked she looked silly with a coat on but it stopped the majority of people being a pain in the bum I made the jacket after one lovely person with a x cattle dog and a ball decided that her down stay was an invitation to play with her ! loved the old girl she just ignored them but how rude can you be

N/d Anybody Know Anything About Kittens?
Jacquiboss&scoop replied to Legz's topic in General Dog Discussion
I have raised a few kittens and temps are variable LOL treat the same as you would a pup , no growl crate , sounds like the little feral is getting over stimulated , we had a cat who was easy to do this to with just too much patting. They do learn but as he is missing his littermates to teach him how to go a little easier you need to do it instead , crate when he is impossible is a good one. the spray might be a bit much for him try hissing or something that makes a hiss noise with him , good news is he will grow out of it for the most part soon -
Sorry to say but there is not much you can do the only things I have found helpful is for them to be on the lowest possible effective dose , blood and urine checks regularly will help you to keep an eye on liver and kidney function esp with an older animal I find a raw or wet diet helps a little as dry kibble diets tends to mean the animal spends a lot of time drinking large amounts of water and being almost dehydrated at times this adds to the load on the kidneys and liver

Help! Hysterically Crying Pup 8 Week Old Gundog Pup Need Advice
Jacquiboss&scoop replied to jessie86's topic in Puppy Chat
I would rethink crate training him , but if you want him to sleep in your room you may as well move him in as it is less than a week since he came home he may well need a bit longer to settle as well by all means he should spend some time outside or away from you on and off each day when you are home , but work on not letting him back with you when he is making a fuss or the behaviour will not extinguish Some babies are more dependant than others and it takes time , have a chat to your neighbours and let them know he is only new and will settle soon and thank them for their understanding as you are trying to get him to settle down enjoy your new pup looking forward to pics :dancingelephant:
