  1. I think its fair asking for a trainer who deals alot with swf as my swf has small dog syndrome and really has no similar training skills as my 2 bull breeds. While my bully trainer is great with them her techniques were no where near as effective in the swf we had to use a totally different technique.
  2. Id love to swap my dogs, at least minimise their animal product intake but havent had the time to invest in the research. So if you do swap can u let me know how u go??
  3. I think alot just use mature for an adult in rescue
  4. Yes its the trusting isn't it!! You totally get where I'm coming from. lol
  5. Just DA which is fear based so whoever it is would be best they meet him first, he didn't like a plumber who came in the house and OH didn't introduce him. I wasn't there so not sure of the reaction, if he just barked or what. I am a bit suss on kennels as there are all these stories of kennels doing things with peoples dogs they are meant to. I am going to try his private trainer but I think I have left my run to late so these are back ups. I might try underdog which is cosmolo I believe, we are in Wantirna. I am not very trusting of people to do what they are told with my dog. I also dont trust a lot of trainers, lol, I have seen too many who seem to be scared of big dogs so I like a referal at least. My Mum's neighbour took his Rottie to training and had him muzzled even though he has no issues and the trainer was still too scared to go near him?!?!?!
  6. Hi, Our house sitter for one of our dogs has fallen through for the 4 days after Christmas. So as well as it being short notice for finding someone to look after him he also has dog to dog issues and needs a decent handler not just someone who will come and walk him who knows little about dogs. So we are looking for a kennel that could handle him, or a dog walker, or a dog trainer that will work with him in the yard. Its just 4 days so provided I wear him out in the lead up he shouldn't need too much attention but any recommendations would be appreciated
  7. I fall head over heels for every dog i meet. My current foster if he ends up leaving will break my heart. He is not the right dog for us as he and my male staffy can't be alone together and he is a hell of a lot of work (reactive) but him leaving will break my heart all the same. I could understand though how people wouldn't bond with him, cant decide if OH has or not (he will always deny with foster dogs lol)
  8. Funny I have never had any real problems. Once there was an over the top Rottie so we just left. There is a minpin that the owner has run around with lead attached, well my foster stood on the lead and this dog has been flipped and landed flat on his back. Once again we just left. Thats the only dog I've ever really worried about as it seems to bring out a bit of prey drive in the big dogs, or at least too much interest. But I suppose we aren't too bad at reading dogs so just leave when there is one we think we might have an issue with.
  9. I dont know if the person gave them attitude or not but maybe thats why there was 2 fines. I get where meagan is coming from but if only people with 100% recall used the park there would be hardly anyone that could use it. One of mine would the other wouldnt. He has been our biggest challenge he is terrible at training but using the dog park once a week has improved his behaviour better than anything else, not that he has been in a long time
  10. Knox apparently, I think in a fenced dog park not having 100% recall fines are a bit harsh. Its next to the obediance club, and I take my dog in there to work on his recall, plus people take their puppies for socialisation. It was a puppy I heard someone was fined for. I know not everyone on here likes dog parks but I have only ever seen one dog who was a bit over the top in there, no fights, so its not like there is a huge problem with crazy dogs there.
  11. I don't know if many people here use Knox dog park but currently there is a sign saying the park is closed until October. There has been no update to this sign but apparently the council is now handing out fines for using the area as it is closed still. They are also handing out fines if your dog does not have 100% recall so can add up too over $300 in fines very quickly.
  12. Being declared a restricted breed is not the same thing as being declared a dangerous dog. Same restrictions apply for a pit bull as dangerous dog
  13. In Vic at the moment, a wandering bull breed with no papers would be immediately deemed a pit bull and declared dangerous. So saying the council will do nothing is far from true, one case they even went to a dog obediance club saw a dog that looked wrong and seized and attempted to PTS. No behavior problems, cant remember if owners or council won though If its already declared dangerous I have no doubt he will be PTS
  14. I take something to spray dogs with when i walk. I have a dog reactive dog, trainer says he is ok off lead, but he hates off lead dogs when he is on, i never let him off but we get rushed all the time. Its suprising how effective a water spray to the face is, though the owners generally get pissed off. Id leave it up to the victim to report, if it was me id like the choice. Id be annoyed if i decided to call and someone else had done it.
  15. No doesnt actually mean no kill, it means low kill I think Geelong is still around 10% of dogs. Which most consider no kill, as all healthy, stable temperment are saved
  16. Agree most suitable dog, doesnt matter which shelter/rescue they all need a home
  17. I just take the attitude its their house they can do what they want. If i dont like walking past a dog i walk a different way, no big deal. Saves getting stressed and angry over nothing.
  18. That woul probably work. Reason i am avoiding food is they can still see each other and the behaviorist said we hve to make sure all resources are removed when they are together/ can see each other. Once the fence is altered we can use food
  19. He might like the sand pit... Hubby might not but can always tell him after its there. Lol
  20. I have posted a few things in the reactive dog thread. I have a foster who is dog reactive on lead, i have had him 8 months and am quickly losing hope of rehoming him. Anyway he got on with my Staffy for about 6 months then they have a fight, nothing big but we called behaviorist, she could she no issues until a 3rd dog joined in to play with them, so we removed him, good for a month then another fight. So now they have to be kept totally separate when we aren't home. So foster boy has a run down the side of the house, it needs some modification as they bark and carry on at each other through the fence. So we are going to put 2 gates in so we have some distance and also make it so they can't see each other... its a picket fence at the second. Anyway I want some things for the foster boy to do in his run while we are out. As he is less reactive when he is tired, like after and 1 hr obediance class, but unfortunely we dont have time for this every day. Its about 14 metres by 2 metres and at the second we don't want it to be food related (till we put second gate in) so I was looking for some ideas?? Difficult requirements I know
  21. No behaviourists would judge a dog aggressive from behind a fence! Very unfair comment
  22. I have a reactive dog, he isnt too bad and we have not had issues off lead (in controlled situations with a private trainer) He wheres a yellow bandana at training and i make sure i stay away from the group if possible and that i dont block parhways etc. it was 100% her fault. I would be so upset and embrassed if my dog did that. I have had him charge at others a few times when someone has come up behind me, i still consider that my fault, even though nothing happened as i pulled him back, but it is not good training for their dog so i have to make sure that doesnt happen When he does get to off lead we will muzzle him because you just cant know and its not worth it
  23. The two bolded bits - well come back and give us an update when he's a mature adult  Nothing you describe is unusual for the breed - coming when called, stable when people approach him, enjoying a run - all normal stuff and I don't believe one person has said otherwise. The good thing about this is mine bark and charge at the door which is enough to scare most people. Never mind that once the door is open he will merely lick the person to death. Maybe I should have discourged it but I like the warning someone is coming especially when hubby is away.
