  1. As a breed, we collectively groan when we see that the judge is Canadian or American as their breed standard is significantly different to ours as we follow the country of origin (and the rest of the world). They are supposed to read and take ours on board but judging reflects that this rarely happens. Always been a problem and will no doubt continue to be one. I just vote with my feet.
  2. Does anyone have the Border Terrier results? Nice for Spikes Puppy with her win! Well done Elsa! Cheers
  3. I was about to come back and correct those who thought that the Insurance was unnecessary, however I see this has been answered correctly by some knowledgeable posters. Here is an extract from the site telling you all about the Personal Indemnity Insurance: "that takes a fee for service and delivers a product that a client relies upon is a candidate for professional indemnity insurance. What typically does a professional indemnity insurance policy cover? Professional indemnity insurance basically insures you against your skill. Some clients may have made a financial loss from you services to them. Professional indemnity insurance covers you for any legal costs that may arise from the client filing a lawsuit against you. You are also covered for any potential compensation in the event of losing the lawsuit." If you are receiving Centrelink payments and taking money for photos the Dept are looking to catch up with you - this includes any revenue not declared. I was not making any judgements just emparting the warning as there are currently doggy people being investigated - including amateur photographers. My career was involved with Finance and Insurance (I retired 18 months ago) so I am reasonably up to date with this sort of thing. The laws have changed (due to the AML) and things are much stricter now. Cheers
  4. You need to be very careful taking payment for photos at shows and selling them. There has been recently a situation where the VCA have stepped in and told someone doing this, that they need PI insurance to do so - and this is the law in Australia so the VCA are correct. If you start announcing that you are taking photos and SELLING them, there are legal procedures to do so. There is also the situation where someone else was reported to Centrelink for the same thing - so unless you are everyones best buddy, just be careful, do everything by the book and watch your back. I get someone to do photos for me and what arrangement we have in private is our business and not advertised for all to see. Cheers
  5. How efficient is this club secretary? My numbers arrived yesterday and that is well in advance of the show. The must go to Mrs Warner for such an amazing effort! 819 entries so another good show.

  9. Had a call to say that the Baby Border (owned by Denise Worthington of Dewton) was BPOG. BP In Show went to a Mini Dachie. Didn't hear the rest of the conversation - I was Drag Racing today! Gaela
  10. I was led to believe (some months ago) that the Canadian with the Terrier experience was judging Terriers. I see now we have the Japanese judge. Be a bit of hard work for breeds like ours :D - just little brown dogs that don't look groomed and flashy, but I now have an attitude that the Royal is the show where I catch up with everyone I haven't seen for a while and have a bit of fun. Anything more than that is a bonus and I am sure there are some exhibitors who are  with the excitement of seeing who is judging. Plenty of other shows in the year. I know there were some real dramas for the organisers with the RAS changing the dates and judges having signed contracts years ahead. Good to see this did not break their stride. These people do everything they can to help and support the exhibitors but the RAS almost works against them. Standing ovation for the people that work on this and do everything in their power to go into battle for us and our dogs. Gaela
  11. Thanks for that Sway - my Journal is not here yet so appreciated the lookie see. A quick question ........ are there no online entries like last year? I know Estelle had lots of dramas so it won't surprise me if this is so. I said last year, I would never do the Royal again - sigh ....... what a difference a year makes and I'll have to eat my words! Cheers Gaela
  12. Thanks for your explanation, I'm not a breeder. I don't plan to breed her. You didn't answer my question. In my experience, being entire or desexed doesn't seem to make an important difference in how a bitch reacts to strange puppies. This seems to be more to do with the bitch's own personality - fearful, timid, playful, out-going, etc. However, at certain stages in the oestral cycle bitches can be more moody or more sooky. Hormonal spikes can occur for a couple of weeks prior and during oestrus and for the two months following a season - some bitches are more affected than others, just as some women can be more sensitive to hormonal spikes than other women. If your bitch has just gone out of season or is due to come into season then she may be having hormonal spikes and the sight of the puppies may be exacerbating this. What was she like when she was in season? If she was particularly moody, this may be relevant. Having said all this, it has been my experience that most dogs of either sex, entire or otherwise, are very interested in puppies. This is probably instinct - just as most humans respond naturally to babies (although pregnant and lactating women generally have a stronger response). Fantastic reply 'gundoglover'! Really well written. My girls are just dreadful when they are coming into season/in season and turn into feral nasty fighters - every one of them. They return to sweet girls afterwards but we have to separate them from everyone else while this is going on. I cannot see the point of keeping a bitch entire unless there is a fantastic reason.
  13. Yes, it was Amy. I was so thrilled! Terje (Int, Nwy, Swd, Aust Ch WW-08 Damdyke Gentil Hugel - Imp Swd) is such a gorgeous boy but is quite different to most of the BTs in this country. He looked great and didn't put a foot wrong. Gorgeous lineup of Terriers and I was sandwiched between Cathy with James and Sarah with the Bedlington. Thought he was looking at them.
  14. My worst show moment also involved a Great Dane - not my breed but in my fitter days I handled quite a few different dogs for people. I was standing at the ring entrance waiting to go in for the Junior in Show and I was gas-bagging to someone. The dog kept knocking against me and I got my hip and shoved him back. Next thing he was over the top of me and knocked me to my knees. I tried to move but he had me pinned and his front legs were gripping me tightly (damn dew claws left marks on my skin!). He rode me for what seemed like forever - I was yelling and everyone just stood there with their mouths open - stunned. I finally dropped flat to the ground and rolled out from under him. It was an indoor show (at Dunedin, NZ) and my clothes were filthy, face red and then I started crying. Afterwards I was more upset that no-one tried to pull the dog off me - everyone stood there like zombies. While I can see the humour now, I didn't at the time and it was the most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to me at a dog show. Stick to the Borders these days!

  18. I used to have this problem when I was showing in NZ (before I got a dog trailer) and I solved it with placing a couple of those moisture control units that you can use and throw away. They are plastic tubs (with holes in the top) with a product that looks a bit like kitty litter. They absorb all the moisture and I found that stopped the wet windscreen. Have one in my hand as I speak and it is called 'Hippo Moisture Absorber'. It says that it: Helps prevent mould and mildew Combats Odours Keeps small spaces dry and fresh. I used to sit a couple of the shelf in front of the windscreen. Keep a couple of 'Velida' cloths (thin blue ones) in the car as they are fantastic for drying the inside of a windscreen without leaving streaks. Cheers Gaela
  19. Thank you for taking the time to find that for me - much appreciated! Cheers Gaela
  20. Another exhibitor and I, caught children trying to let air out of tyres at Sunbury last year - we chased them and scared the life out of them but were unable to catch the little darlings and escort them back to the parents. I have had my registration and plastic cover, removed from my trailer twice so I now carry it in the ute and present it to Mr Plod when asked for it. It was removed with some force and hard to know if it is kids or someone wanting to put it on their unregistered trailer. Very irritating!
  21. I have got home and only to find my catalogues missing! Does anyone have their catalogues for Tantanoola and Millicent - Sun & Mon? I am after the Border terrier total entries. Can't put up the DOL results without these. Thanks in advance if you can help me. Gaela
  22. I have 4 male stud dogs and no kennels plus 5 girls! My two younger boys run together and despite being sexually active, they get along fine. Food is the only thing they will squabble over. The other boys are older and one is an Import (arrived at 6 years old) and while they will walk together on lead I would never run them together. I bought (on ebay) two fantastic big strong pens which I have set up indoors. I rotate the boys (the two 18 month olds, older Import and older home bred boy) into a 1/2 acre day garden/lawn area which is dog & snake proof. Works really well and they are superfit, happy and never feel like they are locked away. Keeps them much quieter and they have not learned some of the ugly kennel habits. When they are penned they can watch me doing my daily whatever and are very relaxed. If I have their gates open they usually put themselves away for sleep. To be honest - the boys are great, it is the girls that I have to be very careful with!
  23. I have had a few people already contact me so here is the link: http://www.wolfweb.com.au/acd/birthdefects.htm The Americans contacted this vet and are currently writing something for their National Magazine based on this paper. Regards Gaela
  24. Amy - mine arrived last week and I live in Kilmore! Most impressive. See you there. Must check out your gorgeous wee girl this time. Was too busy last weekend and missed a cuddle with her. BTW - your wee boy was so well behaved. I saw him a couple of times and I remember how naughty mine were at that age when I dragged them to dog shows. Gaela
  25. I have fed BARF diet (love it and believe in it) to all my dogs for some years to try and combat the CECS condition our breed is afflicted with - it is well acknowledged now that diet is key in all of this. However, I have been plagued with birth defects in my pups and so have my friends overseas (the USA) who feed BARF with the same issues. I now move the girls I am mating to complete food (Advance puppy plus) once they are in season and leave them on this (and nothing else) until the pups are weaned and they then go back to the BARF diet. It is well documented (and my dramas are living proof) that if you don't get the calcium/phosphorus exactly right, you can have problems with birth defects and milk fever (calcium deficiency in the lactating mum). Vit A imbalance between days 17 - 22 of gestation will cause kink tails and the list goes on. I had 2 litters not long ago and 50% of the pups in BOTH litters had birth defects and I lost many of them. I currently have a litter and did the complete food thing and all pups are strong & well and the bitch came through with no calcium issues this time. There is a group of us (worldwide) who have been looking at this issue for some years and have all decided this is the best way to manage it. I have an excellent paper done by an Australian vet on the very subject, and if anyone would like it please email me and I will forward it to you. [email protected] It is a great read and I applied the advice and it worked. There is also a new BARF food on the market which is NZ made and just arrived in Australia. I am feeding this and love it. K9 Natural is the brand. They are sponsoring our Border Terrier Speciality Show in June this year and flying a company rep from NZ and an agent from Sydney to talk with people. Well worth coming down if you are in Victoria. This is much cheaper to feed than Ian Billinghursts and freeze dried so easier to store. I love the stuff and it is so much easier to manage (not as messy), smells glorious and dogs need less volume - I had to cut them back as they put on weight. Cheers Gaela
