  1. sounds to me like there are too many chiefs and not enough indians and people are just running rampant under whatever rules they want to come under, and its the people that do the right thing that will end up getting caught, restricted in any future events and hauled over the coals for it.
  2. gorgeous animals. would love to see what the puppies turn out like - they must just be giant fluffballs.
  3. i dont know anything about this subject and would be interested in learning more. As a person who doesnt know anything shouldnt the question be "why shouldnt i get my puppy desexed" or is it a question of age that we are discussing
  4. Got my cookbook today thanks, looking forward to reading it.
  5. i would get a second opinion and maybe look at what is happening in the environment to make this problem continue. are her ears getting wet when having a drink from the bucket, and does it normally have problems with water getting stuck in ears. not sure if its an issue with dogs, but if its really hot, and sweat is building up in the ears could lead to an ear infection -so maybe thats something else to look at
  6. i have a 25 kg staffy that i am trying desperately to get some weight off. she only gets 1 cup of mashed veges and 1/2 a chicken breast (as an example) we also go for two 20 min walks a day.
  7. lyssavirus (sp??) and hendra virus. its like rabies. last i heard it may have been something in bananas that the bats were eating. you should never have horses near anywhere where bats roost (bat poo is lethal)
  8. dog is still recovering slowly and appears that she may be out of the woods. Still dont know what caused it, and we were really lucky this time. My brother has done a check of the yard and cant find anything that may have contributed to the sudden attack. Have passed on some information from here about the grass mould and some other plants that he may need to look out for.
  9. If the pet shops arent allowed to sell puppies/animals, then doesnt that take away the market to buy puppies which may not be healthy, cared for etc. Then a) if people want an animal they either go to a breeder who knows what they are doing, or rescue group and b) doesnt it then make the owner more responsible (and I use that word loosely) and make them get the animals either desexed or away from each other. A problem i can see with this is the continuation of the dumping of animals but dont we need to try and limit the market and reduce the market place - not necessarily to get more control but one cause is going to create several effects
  10. learning to drive a car is probably a bad example to use as you have had 17 years to watch how mum and dad use the indicator, turn the steering wheel, make judgements as to when to go, learn what the road signs mean. However if its something like flying a plane or driving a train where you havent been preexposed to it, you would not have a clue of where to start learning. some things you can fumble your way through, and operating on an animal is probably not one of them
  11. i dont feed my dog anywhere near what they recommend - just how do they come up with those figures for feeding
  12. tried too, but camera and dog werent being cooperative. Will try again today. Definitely sounds like something I will need to get checked out anyway.
  13. no these ones are red and can be squished in between fingers and not break, they are similar to ????? a teat??? but in the middle of shoulder blades and there is one on her shoulder (not near where she can lie on dirt/grass) the one i felt this afternoon felt like a tick, felt around a heap, and looked at it with magnifying glass and torch and when i rubbed over it, it just fell off. just by feeling it, it feels like a tick, will seriously monitor it, but am thinking it may be reaction to bee or wasp. will send email to vet tomorrow as well
  14. seriously where do some of these people get off just dumping these defenseless creatures. i bang my head sometimes in just shear amazement at their callousness
  15. I am thinking there is a noise there that you cant hear that the dogs can. I wear hearing aids, and when i turn on a flurescent light, it sounds like a pop, crackle and fizz, but when i asked other people about it (as i was concerned) they cant even hear it, so it is quite possible. also the smell may be getting to them
  16. as you can imagine, today hasnt been a good day. I know the words, compost, grass clippings, mould, fermentation have been mentioned. for a dog that was as close to deaths door instantaneously, to have at the moment and fingers crossed, appears to be recovering, it needs to be out there, that perhaps with the rain that many of us are experiencing, and with the grass being mowed more frequently that this is possibly something we all need to be aware of. the dog was found collapsed under a tree after the other dog was going right off, that tree has now been removed even though it is not thought to be poisonous - may have been a freak accident that this dog has reacted to it, but the vet is saying due to the recovery that it is something like mould, grass, berry
  17. you also need to add sheenas gold, aussie gold, geisha girl - not sure of their proper names but the flowers and berries are highly toxic - councils use them as dividers and they appear to be everywhere. they are also linked to the bat disease which is lethal as bats like to eat them.
  18. We learn things every day. When I say he doesnt have a compost heap - he doesnt in the yard. the dog is a working dog, and may have come in contact with some mould or something in the line of duty (so to speak). on some grass clippings. when the vets are saying you are not going to take your dog home, and then two hours later, is trying to sit up and recover, and is now at home after being unconscious and fitting, and vomiting etc, they are saying that it was a massive, instant overdose/poisoning and for some reason (so far) the dog appears to be improving. I work in childcare, and have passed on all the poisonous plants etc, would not have considered a grass clipping pile as lethal, so I have put it out there.
  19. ;) im not sure that grumpy is the patient type though, and Sheridan was just trying to find an amicable mid way point of how to tactfully resolve the situation. Im not sure where this topic now leads me, I work with children 10 hours a day, 5 days a week, dont particularly like them at the moment (have three babies teething), and then have to spoil my puppy when I finish. I dont have any objections to asking children if they have clean hands - its the same as asking an assistance animal if they are allowed to be interacted with, and I have also been asked before by a child if they could pat my dog. I gave them acknowledgement, i gave them praise and said I am really glad you asked me that is the right thing to do, and that way i could get my normally disobedient dog to sit so the child could do it. If a child rushed up, they probably would have regretted it (staffy owner) but yeah this topic has me in stitches, thinking children rule the world nah nah, my four legged baby comes first
  20. the thing is though, he doesnt have a compost heap. Is going around trimming all trees, and anything that has flowers or berries, really trimming back and vacuuming up. There are no poisonous trees or shrubs but obviously something got her big time. fingers crossed for recovery.
  21. my brothers 16 month old GSD was in serious trouble this morning. Ended up having fits, vomiting and diarhrea (sp??), arrived unconscious at 24 hour vet, was put on charcoal and drip. Brother was told that he would not be taking the beloved pet back home. All appears okay for now, vets amazed at apparant recovery, is sleeping at the moment, but all fingers are pointing to grass left in a compost heap which has produced a toxic reaction. not sure what long term affects are yet but still praying for recovery anybody heard of this before edit: no weed killer has been used
