  1. I am pretty much the same, depends on the quality of life during and after the incident and how old they are.
  2. Yes please for the photo and/or more info. I was able to (probably shouldnt have) break one open, blood came out, and then once it scabbed over it disappeared. It did seem to first start from a bite of some description. Have found another one though, not as bad in different place. Cant put any more frontline on her yet as she has had two doses in the last month due to going to boarding kennels for two separate weekends.
  3. nothing beats practical experience and I wouldnt be too keen on a vet not having some practical experience
  4. We still have quite a few family neighbourhood days run by the council, they have info relatating to the local area, like an education/schools/daycare table, and then a cyclone/disaster management table, a movie night, portable skate park, basketball games, pool parties, and then they have food, entertainment, the local library and quite often the canine clubs will go and do working dog/agility shows, so they are still around
  5. Im feeling very guilty about my four legged baby, have had absolute crap week at work, and instead of playing with her when i have finished for the day, I have had to be on internet and doing bookwork and stuff, so feel a bit crap about 'neglecting' her
  6. Well done for at least opening the lines of communication, hope that the dogs settle down and at least you have a couple of suggestions for fencing and plantings if it doesnt work out.
  7. Just had another thought and I could be totally wrong on this one. Guide dogs australia would have impeccable breeding stock, well ordered and documented training guidelines and feeding guidelines, and yet isnt their failure rate at approx 50%. So even with all these qualities there is no guarantee that the dog is going to be in pristine condition. So does it all come back down to educating the owners and making them realise the uncertainty of it all.
  8. have just had a thought - should the issue be about the relationship you have with the breeder. If i go to a breeder and say i want a GSD to use for security work, and even after 6 months work, the dog is just absolutely no good for my purposes. If I have been in contact with the breeder, two options could be open to me (I am assuming) the dog is given back to the breeder to give to someone else as the dog is a perfect family pet, and you never know that someone else may be struggling with a high prey dog that would suit my purposes or I keep the dog as a pet.
  9. i would be interested in the links also if they are available thanks
  10. Do new puppy owners honestly believe that they are going to get a lifetime guarantee that they will never have to take their dog to the vet or something will never happen to the dog. That just beggars belief that you can get a 100% guarantee, and its never the owners fault (allowing dogs to jump, feeding crap) sounds very similar to the childcare industry with the onset of these 'token' children. hand the kids over for 10 hours a day five days a week for five years, person who looks after them through thick and thin, mentions to parents concerns they have only to be told she'll be right mate, step inside school ground for one day, and suddenly the teacher is the best thing since sliced bread when they have said there is a problem etc. or its the day care persons fault when the child does not cope with school and its like where have you been for the last 5 years. I know its off topic but really people need to get a grip and take responsibility for their own actions, and guess what accidents happen, genetic flaws show up,and that is just the luck of the draw. Maybe contracts need to be worded differently saying something like: we have loved the dogs, we have done these tests etc, but nothing is guaranteed in life, enjoy what you have got.
  11. If someone came up to me and said there was an issue, I would not have a problem in rectifying it if it could be solved to the satisfaction of both parties. My next door neighbour has asked if her dogs continual barking is an issue, I have said yes they are noisy, but unfortunately they live on a corner block with a bike path outside their house which leads to the local school and shops. I dont expect her to keep her dogs quiet with that much excitement going on around them. If my dog barks, I then know to get up and there is a problem. I can fully understand that grumpy neither has the patience, willpower or ability to change his behaviour and I dont think it is unreasonable for the neighbours to be told of an issue that has suddenly arisen due to the placement of the trampoline. In the end, the neighbours are going to be wondering what on earth is happening to the dogs if they are arking up.
  12. Great news, hopefully it was something minor, although you may have to watch it after the affects of the iv wear off. Were you told to keep excitement down a little
  13. If its possible, I would put the dog in a safe room thatt is not accessible to the children. Put one of those plastic door lock things on so you can be sure the children wont accidently open the door by themselves. Depending on how old the children are, try desensitizing the dog to visitors but make sure the dog is on a lead and the time exposed is gradually increased if possible. dont think the children should miss out on opportunities and the dog may have a chance to learn and change behaviour
  14. Its not an issue that I have honestly thought a lot about. I have only had the privalege (sp??) of ever owning one dog who I saved from being pts from a friend. However, my brother is now in a business which is dependant on purebred dogs, and I am very interested in companion work with labradors to do delta work, hearing assistance dogs and guide dogs due to my personal situation, so these issues could quite possibly affect me in the future. Will watch this conversation with interest, I am not sure how I can personally contribute to this discussion but will try.
  15. 11 year old female staffy seems to be getting a few blood blisters. the first one was about three weeks ago between her shoulder blades. Initially it felt like she had been stung by bee or wasp as it was swollen, but it was still there (a reddish lump) for approx three weeks. Put paw paw cream on it, but it didnt help, it does seem to hurt or be itchy when I touch it. In the end while combing her, I managed to break it and then it turned into scab and healed up. However she appears to have two more near her legs. It doesnt appear to be near where collar is or in places where lying down can exacebate the problem. Any ideas why she might be getting these, and how to remove them?
  16. The usual suggestion is to reduce food intake slightly and exersize a little more. Not sure what labbies are supposed to weigh, 40 kg sounds to me like it is slightly overweight, particularly if its an older dog, who probably is using as much energy as previously. Cut it down by 1/2 a cup and if that doesnt show any improvements cut it down by another 1/2 cup and see what happens
  17. dont understand this at all, absolute disgrace
  18. How did your puppy go last night?? did you end up going to vets or is that a job for this morning??
  19. I have been soooo lucky with my dogs, have never really had a toileting issue with them. Gorgeous photos
  20. persophone - if that is true, wouldnt that make the dog feel worse, not having control over moving and not being able to "flight" if being scared of something????
  21. i hope the injured postie is told of our support and our thanks for saving that dogs life. I dont think the dog meant it, but the owners of the house should also be informed of the incident so that they have the option of rectifying the situation.
